Manithaneya Makkal Katchi urges ECI to drop use of EVMs; wants ballot paper system reintroduced
Passing nine resolutions at its conference held in Madurai on Sunday, the members said that the EVMs had led to numerous doubts over their genuineness. The ballot paper alone had stood the tests in very many aspects in the past and hence, the governments should restore it in full faith.
MMK president Jawahirullah, who was in the chair, led the rally taken out by the members marking the conference.
The meeting urged the governments to give more rights, especially, political rights, to Muslims through a resolution.
Out of the 4,123 Assembly seats in the country, only 296 among them were Muslims, which was 7.18 %. Likewise, it was still more lesser representation in Parliament, where it was a meagre 4.4 %. In panchayats, municipalities and corporations, it was far from satisfaction for the Muslims, as the number of elected representatives stood very low, the resolution said.
On Tiruparankundram Sikkandar dargah row, the MMK conference said that as per the Places of Worship Special Provision Act of 1991, the governments shall protect and provide amenities to the people offering prayers at the dargah.
Condemning the vice-president of India Jagdeep Dhankar for his 'irresponsible' speech at a meeting held in New Delhi recently on amending the Constitution, the members said that the Vice-President held a Constitutional position. Hence, he should not speak like a BJP spokesperson.
The Wakf Amendment Act should be dropped forthwith in the larger interest of the minorities and the Union government should drop its mischievous plans. Harming the minorities would be condemned and the Tamil Nadu government should continue its role in protecting the Muslims.
In his address, Mr Jawahirullah said that the governments should ensure safety and security for the minorities as per the Constitution. The joblessness under the BJP rule had risen and the privatisation of industries had resulted in erosion of public sector undertakings.
He said that nation's external affairs policies towards Muslim nations was highly objectionable and India should stop its support to Israel on the Palestinian issue.

Election Commission NEW DELHI: Amid claims and counter-claims over the special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar electoral rolls, Election Commission officials said Sunday that the poll panel's guidelines, issued on June 24, allow electors to add documents after submitting their enumeration forms, till July 25 and even during the 'claims and objections' period. Besides, electoral registration officers can rely on field inquiry or alternative proof - beyond the 11 documents listed by EC for citizenship - to decide on an elector's inclusion. The list, a source said, is "indicative and not exhaustive". 11 documents specified to prove eligibility indicative: EC Official EROs (electoral registration officers) are empowered under the law to take a call on what documents, other than those specifically mentioned, can be taken into account, the source said. They, however, clarified that Aadhaar may still not be accepted as an alternative document, since it is merely a proof of identity - defining that the 10 fingerprints, iris and photo belong to the person in whose name Aadhaar is issued - and does not establish that person's citizenship or date of birth. After publication of draft roll, if any document is deficient, EROs can obtain such documents from electors whose name appears in the draft roll during scrutiny in the 'claims and objections' period," CEC Gyanesh Kumar told TOI on Sunday. Importantly, a senior EC functionary clarified that the list of 11 documents specified by EC to prove one's eligibility for inclusion in the roll - as per Article 326 of the Constitution and provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 - is indicative and not exhaustive, and that the ERO has powers under the law to satisfy himself about the eligibility of a person to be enrolled as an elector on the basis of any other document or local inquiry if he deems fit. However, the ERO must make a "speaking order", recording in writing the reasons for such inclusion or exclusion. Even the ERO's decision is subject to a two-stage appellate process after publication of final roll, first at the level of district magistrate and then the chief electoral officer (CEO). A reading of the SIR guidelines dated June 24 confirms this. The text above the list of 11 documents mentioned in the declaration form to be signed by the elector not included in Bihar's 2003 electoral roll clearly states that the list is "indicative (not exhaustive)". "The advertisement (issued by Bihar chief electoral officer in some newspapers on Sunday) is in conformity with the SIR instructions issued by EC on June 24," the CEC told TOI. Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday accused BJP of conspiring to deprive the people of Bihar of their voter rights through the SIR. People will surely respond to "this BJP attack on democracy and the Constitution in the upcoming assembly elections", he said. Citing the advertisement, he alleged that "when the pressure from the opposition, the public, and civil society increased, EC hurriedly published advertisements, which state that now only a form needs to be filled, and showing documents is not necessary". The EC's clarification came even as nearly 1.7 crore enumeration forms, accounting for 21.5% of Bihar's electorate, are already collected and over 7.2% uploaded on ECINET. Meanwhile, responding to the criticism directed at EC for rushing with the SIR without prior consultation with political parties, CEC Kumar said, "During the past four months, all 4,123 EROs, all 775 district election officers and all 36 CEOs have held nearly 5,000 meetings with 28,000 political party representatives. EC has also invited all recognised political parties for interaction. No one was satisfied with the current status of electoral rolls for one reason or the other. "

"Lot of poison in BJP's mind for Maharashtra": Aaditya Thackeray
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 6 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray on Sunday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for comparing the Pahalgam terror attack to incidents of violence in Maharashtra amid the ongoing language controversy, and said that the ruling party holds 'a lot of poison' in its mind towards the state. He further questioned the ruling BJP in the centre over the delay in arresting the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack. 'There is a lot of poison in the BJP's mind when it comes to Maharashtra. Today, the BJP has compared Maharashtra to the terrorists in the Pahalgam incident - the terrorists whom the BJP could not catch or stop. It has been three months since the Pahalgam incident, but where did those terrorists go? Nobody knows if they fled to Pakistan or joined the BJP. But comparing them to Maharashtra shows the malice and poison that the BJP has for the state,' Thackeray told reporters here. Amid the political sparring over Hindi imposition charge by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar on Sunday compared the agony of the Pahalgam terror attack, where Hindus were killed in the name of religion, and those getting 'beaten up' in the name of language. He said that these incidents were distressing for him. 'All these incidents cause pain, suffering, and mental distress. In Pahalgam, they shot them after asking about their religion. And here, they beat up the innocent Hindus just because of the language they speak. Such cases create a disturbance,' Shelar said. His remarks come after some incidents of violence and vandalism were reported in the state amid the ongoing Hindi-Marathi controversy. Five workers of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were arrested in connection with the vandalism at entrepreneur Sushil Kedia's office in Worli, police said on Saturday. A case has been registered against them under Sections 223, 189(2), 189(3), 190, 191(2), 191(3), and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Kedia, who found himself in the middle of the language row in Maharashtra over his recent remarks against MNS and its chief Raj Thackeray, stated that he made these comments in haste and has now realised his mistake. In another incident, as per a viral video, a group of men allegedly associated with a regional party beat up a shop owner for not speaking in Marathi. The incident occurred in the Mira-Bhayandar area near Mumbai. On Friday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warned of strict legal action against those engaging in 'hooliganism' in the name of Marathi. He said that the Mahayuti government will not tolerate violence against commoners. Although the Maharashtra government withdrew its April 16 orders on the implementation of the three-language policy that made Hindi a 'mandatory' third language for school students in Classes 1 to 5 studying in English and Marathi medium schools, the political controversy over the same has brought together long-time estranged Thackeray cousins after nearly two decades.
