Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte receives overwhelming support after fan's cruel comments about late mother
The sports community has rallied around Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte after a fan brought him to tears with derogatory comments about his late mother during the team's 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on Tuesday.
The fan who made the cruel comments toward Marte was ejected from the game and banned indefinitely from attending all MLB ballparks indefinitely, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to Fox News Digital.
Marte, 31, was left in tears after the fan yelled derogatory comments about his late mother, Elpidia Valdez, who died in a car crash in the Dominican Republic in 2017.
During the Diamondbacks-White Sox game on Wednesday, the White Sox displayed a supportive message on their scoreboard during Marte's at-bat in the first inning.
"Baseball is Family: The White Sox community supports Ketel Marte," the message said.
MLB's official account on X also posted message in support of Marte.
New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns also took to social media to express his support for Marte.
Towns, like Marte, lost his mother and can sympathize with what Marte went through. Jackie Cruz-Towns died due to complications from COVID-19 in April 2020.
MLB fans also took to social media to show their support for Marte.
The Diamondbacks won the first two games of their series against the White Sox but were unable to complete the sweep as the White Sox won 7-3 on Wednesday.
Marte went 0-4 in the loss but is in the midst of another outstanding season for the Diamondbacks. The two-time All-Star, in 54 games, has a .313 batting average with 15 home runs and 32 RBI.
The Diamondbacks (41-39) have an off day on Thursday and begin a three-game series with the Miami Marlins (33-45) at home on Friday, with the first pitch coming at 9:40 p.m. ET.

Joe Ryan followed it up with a stellar start they badly needed. With Pablo López shelved because of a shoulder injury until perhaps September, Ryan has unquestionably become the staff ace. 'You feel like you're going to win every time he pitches,' manager Rocco Baldelli said Thursday, a day after Ryan threw a three-hitter over six scoreless innings to beat Seattle 2-0 and stop Minnesota's five-game losing streak. 'You definitely look forward to the days where he's on the bump and you get a chance to watch him throw, because you feel like anything's possible.' The 29-year-old right-hander is well on track for his first All-Star selection, with a career-best 2.86 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 91 innings. 'It's just tough, a lot of crooked numbers the last couple of weeks, but it's going to change.' Before López and fellow starter Zebby Matthews were sidelined by shoulder injuries earlier this month, the Twins were in a groove on the mound. Dodgers right-hander Clayton Kershaw strikes out 5, moves closer to 3,000 career strikeouts
DENVER — Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw inched closer to 3,000 career strikeouts on Thursday, fanning five in six innings against the Colorado Rockies. Kershaw has 2,997 strikeouts in his 18-year career, three short of becoming the 20th major leaguer to reach the milestone. The 37-year-old would be the third active pitcher to reach the mark behind Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. Verlander, in his 20th season, has 3,468 strikeouts. Scherzer has 3,412 in 18 seasons. Kershaw struck out three in the first two innings Thursday and got his fourth for the final out of the fifth. He struck out Tyler Freeman for the second out of the sixth inning and left the game after retiring the next batter. He threw 69 pitches, 41 for strikes. He recorded two strikeouts on his 73 mph curve and got three more on sliders against a Rockies' lineup that included all right-handed batters. Rays' Wander Franco found guilty in child sex abuse case
Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco was found guilty of sexual abuse of a minor in the Dominican Republic on Thursday and received a two-year suspended prison sentence. Franco, now 24, was arrested last year after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old when he was 21 years old. He also faced charges of sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking. Franco last played in Major League Baseball in August 2023 before he was placed on administrative leave after the allegations involving his relationship with the underage girl surfaced.
