Pop-Up to Pay Out: Inside the $144K Scam That Crossed Borders

Time of India30-05-2025

New Delhi: It was a typical day for 57-year-old Japanese national Sakai Takaharu, casually browsing the internet on his computer, when a pop-up appeared on his screen, setting off a chain of events that would lead him down a harrowing journey of deception and financial loss.
The alert message was alarming, claiming his system was infected with a virus and instructing him to call a specified phone number.
With a sense of urgency, Sakai dialled the number, unwittingly stepping into a sophisticated tech support scam that would ultimately drain his bank account of two crore yen ($144,130 USD). The scammers, posing as Microsoft representatives, convinced Sakai to install remote-control software, giving them access to his computer and sensitive financial information.
They then instructed him to transfer his bank account balance to a new account, supposedly to secure his funds.
Sakai, unaware of the scam, complied, and the scammers disappeared with his money.
Takaharu, a resident of Hyogo prefecture in Japan, was not alone. There were multiple victims of this scam. Soon, Koji Suzuki, Masashi Matsui and Sherpa Norsang also approached the cops in Japan, prompting the National Police Agency of Japan to initiate a full throttle probe.

The investigation that followed revealed a complex network of call centres, fake pop-up advertisements, and cryptocurrency accounts used by the scammers. The perpetrators, based in India, had used sophisticated techniques to make their fake virus alerts and phishing prompts appear legitimate. The Japanese police alerted the CBI here, prompting an investigation and registration of an FIR under sections of extortion, IT Act and criminal conspiracy.
The two organisations worked with Microsoft to generate exact IP addresses and physical locations of the accused.
On Thursday, the agency said it had arrested six individuals after conducting raids at 19 locations in Delhi, UP and Haryana. A few of the individuals involved in the racket are students and were learning Japanese language. The sleuths dismantled two call centers as well.
Probe revealed that the pop-ups were hosted on malicious URLs using Microsoft Azure servers.
"Further, the Japanese language used by the callers was notably unnatural and non-fluent. Additionally, background conversations in Hindi were audible during calls, suggesting that the operations were conducted from India. Analysis of malicious URLs used in fraudulent pop-ups and IP addresses used to subscribe to hosting platforms traced the activity back to India," the CBI added.
In the case of Takaharu, probe revealed that the suspects had purchased 2.1 BTC (Bitcoins) in a Binance account, which was transferred to cryptocurrency accounts linked to one Kapil Gakhar.
In others cases, the suspects instructed the victims to buy Apple Gift Cards as the cost of removing the virus and obtained the codes of the gift card from the victim.
The investigation identified key players who had different roles. They created fake pop-ups, operated call centres, and managed infrastructure to target Japanese victims. "The CBI has seized substantial digital and physical evidence indicative of the large-scale operations of the syndicate. Preliminary analysis confirms that the scam leveraged advanced social engineering techniques and technical subterfuge to manipulate victims," the CBI added.

Drop gates to be set up at 20 spots to prevent entry, exit of criminals: IG

1 2 3 South Chotanagpur zone inspector general Manoj Koushik has joined the office recently following a major reshuffle in the police administration. Among the major issues in districts under his jurisdiction are cybercrime, extremism, drug peddling and organized crime. He talks to TOI's Sanjay Sahay about the plans and measures for overall crime control. Excerpts... What measures are underway to eliminate extremism from South Chotanagpur which includes a Maoist hotbed in West Singhbhum district? Chaibasa (West Singhbhum), where top Maoist leaders are hiding, is the only core area of the rebels in the state. State police and CRPF are conducting joint operations to sanitize the area. In some districts like Ranchi, Khunti, Loharadga and Gumla, the splinter groups of Maoists have a presence but their activities have dwindled considerably. The active groups are mainly criminals using the name of the rebels to extort money. Most of these anti-social elements are identified and actions are being taken against them. I also request people to inform the police if there are extortion calls from organised crime groups. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Azioni Italia fino a 2€ BG SAXO Scopri di più Undo Cybercrime is on the rise. What steps police have taken to curb it? Awareness is necessary to save citizens from falling victim to cybercriminals. The elderly, who are soft targets of such criminals, should be also focused. I have instructed Ranchi police to improve their achievement against cybercriminals with the help of the Pratibimb app. Directions have been issued for registration of cases as soon as they are reported and for immediate action. We will also try to take financial institutions on board for the speedy recovery of money cheated from the victims. What steps will be taken to address the public grievances? In my meeting with Ranchi police recently, I instructed them to ensure speedy disposal of public complaints lodged with the centralized public grievance redressal and monitoring system. This system will be on vigil in other districts, too. We are planning to give a copy of the inquiry report to the complainants if it does not involve confidential information. The citizens will have the option of disputing the report at higher levels. What are your instructions to prevent crime in the state capital? I have asked the police personnel to identify entry and exit points of Ranchi city and build infrastructure so that it could be sealed immediately when a crime is committed. So far, around 20 spots have been selected in this regard. We will set up drop gates at these places. The step will also enable regular checking, which will prevent inter-district and inter-state movement of smugglers and other criminal groups. Warring calls for police reforms, says Cong won't forgive or forget

Ludhiana: Punjab Congress president and MP from Ludhiana, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring slammed AAP for the Vigilance summons issued to Bharat Bhushan Ashu and described the governance of AAP as a "circus instead of a sarkaar. " Warring, who reached Ludhiana to address mediapersons on the issue, said that the Congress would neither forget nor forgive "any sins of omission and commission being committed by this government." Warring said that the summons issued to Ashu amid the election campaign showed that AAP had admitted its defeat and was now acting in sheer frustration. "The cat is out of the bag as both Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann are feeling desperate and frustrated about the imminent loss in the elections," he observed. Warring asked why the VB needed to issue the summons in the midst of the campaign and why they could not wait till the elections. He claimed that earlier, cases were registered against party workers and councillors to threaten and intimidate them so that they would not campaign for Ashu. However, he said that Congressmen would not be intimidated. Warring also warned officers against "dancing like puppets to the tunes of AAP," saying that they would be held accountable in about one year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "We will neither forget, nor shall we forgive or spare you," warned Warring. Saying that Punjab had become a "police state," Warring emphasised the need for comprehensive police reforms to fix accountability. He said that a commission would be set up as soon as the Congress formed government in 2027 to verify the cases, and the fake FIRs would be cancelled immediately. He also said that officers found to have registered fake FIRs would be dismissed instantly. Warring declared that about 50 DSPs, 35 SPs, and a few more officers in Punjab "deserve to be dismissed immediately." He suggested that the commission would identify all such officers. Earlier at 1.30pm, Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, along with Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh, former minister Pargat Singh and former MLA Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu, addressed a PC over the issue at the party's election office. By 2.15pm, Warring, along with former MLAs Surinder Dawar, Rakesh Pandey, Sanjay Talwar, Kuldeep Vaid, Simarjit Singh Bains, Balwinder Bains, Jassi Khangura, and Capt Sandeep Sandhu, besides others, addressed another PC at a hotel near Bhai Bala Chowk, a few metres away from Congress's election office. When questioned about having two PCs over the same issue, Warring said that he was unaware if Ashu was also conducting a press conference. However, he said that the party was united when it came to fighting with the opposition.
