Samana accident: CM assures probe into tipper-trucks misused for illegal mining

Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday met protesting family members of the seven schoolchildren who died when their SUV was hit by a tipper-truck on the Patiala-Samana state highway and assured them of a probe into the May 8 accident. Mann said that he would order a high-level probe into the plying of overloaded tipper-trucks that were being misused for illegal sand mining. 'I've already ordered the transport and police departments to conduct a statewide drive to check the licences of truck drivers and fitness certificates of heavy vehicles. Most tipper-trucks are overloaded. I hope that the sacrifice of these children won't go in vain, and we will unearth the nexus of illegal mining,' the chief minister said. Asked about the involvement of an Aam Aadmi Party MLA in the business of tipper-trucks, Mann said no one would be spared even if he was an AAP legislator or worker for shielding the accused or interfering in the police investigation. The CM said that strict action would be taken against police officials, who delayed action in the case. Following his assurance, the family members and scores of local residents lifted their four-hour blockade near Bhakra overbridge on state highway number 10 between Patiala and Samana. They were demanding justice for the seven children and their driver, who were killed when they were returning from school and their Toyota Innova was hit by an overloaded tipper-truck a month ago. The protesters alleged laxity by the civil administration and police in arresting all accused in the case. The truck was being driven by a 19-year-old with no licence for heavy vehicles. Records showed that the truck's fitness certificate had expired in January 2024 and its pollution certificate in July 2023, while its road tax was valid up to December 2023. In addition, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Yamunanagar, Haryana, had issued a challan for the truck way back in December 2022. Though the driver was arrested, the parents of the children demanded that the truck owner, Randhir Singh, also be held accountable and sent behind bars. Local MLA Chetan Singh Jouramajra has also been at the receiving end of protests for his alleged association with the truck owner. He has, however, denied shielding the accused.

Contract killing: Five arrested for plotting woman's murder near Mhow Naka

Indore: Five people involved in a knife attack on a woman near Mhow Naka on Monday were arrested. The attack, which occurred around 8:30 pm when the woman exited a gym on Footi Kothi Road, was allegedly orchestrated for seeking revenge over an old dispute. The woman was stabbed in the chest by an assailant who then fled the scene on a motorcycle with an accomplice. Annapurna police registered a case under Section 109 of the BNS and launched a investigation. DCP Rishikesh Meena said that within 72 hours, police teams reviewed footage from over 150 cameras across the city, leading to the identification and arrest of the accused. The arrested individuals include Aman Goswami (18), Arjun alias Durlabh Rajput (18), Sahil Singh Chauhan (23), Manish Wadhwani (52), and Vikram Sahu (32). According to police, Aman and Arjun, who met in a juvenile correction facility, were the ones who carried out the actual attack. Aman confessed that Arjun offered him Rs 10,000 to stab the woman. Arjun provided him with her vehicle number and photo. On the day of the attack, Arjun drove Aman to the gym on a motorcycle and stayed across the street while Aman waited outside the gym. As the woman exited the gym, Aman distracted her by asking for directions to the nearby temple and then stabbed her in the chest with intent to kill. He then fled by jumping over the divider and escaping with Arjun on the bike. Further interrogation revealed that Arjun was hired by Sahil Singh Chauhan, who was promised Rs 20,000 to kill the woman. Sahil, in turn, was allegedly offered Rs 3 lakh by Manish Wadhwani, a resident of Omaxe City-1. The motive stemmed from a long-standing personal conflict between Wadhwani and the victim, who worked as a manager at Omaxe City for several years. The two had a public altercation in the past year, and Wadhwani allegedly sought revenge by plotting the attack. Wadhwani reportedly provided Sahil with the office location of the victim and even drove him there to plan the assault. Sahil and Arjun then followed the woman multiple times and eventually discovered her gym routine. The group meticulously planned and executed the attack while concealing their identities.
