Girls basketball Week 10: Rocky Hill is young but ready for postseason
The Rocky Hill girls basketball team advanced to the Class MM quarterfinals last year, where the Terriers lost to eventual champion Northwest Catholic.
The Terriers had a lot of sophomores on that team, and now they're juniors and have continued their success. Rocky Hill finished the regular season 16-4 and as the sixth seed, will play in the first round of the CCC tournament Tuesday against No. 11 Enfield.
'We're still a young team,' Rocky Hill coach Pete Asadourian said. 'They're meshing at the right time. They're playing well.'
Junior Kelsey LaMay leads the team in scoring (21 ppg) but another junior Katie Harding isn't far behind (19 ppg).
Rocky Hill lost twice to Southington, which is 19-1 and ranked second in Class LL, and East Catholic, which is ranked first ahead of Rocky Hill in Class MM, and Plainville in early January.
'I think we've shown we can hang with anyone,' Asadourian said. 'Southington is very good. East Catholic, we had a late lead and we blew that. We had leads in all of our games, with the exception of that second Southington game.
'I think it was immaturity; that was one thing we talked about. We are immature from a basketball sense. If we're up, we have to learn how to finish a game.'
Urielle Abrokwa, East Catholic: Abrowski scored 21 points in a 60-50 win over Glastonbury Friday.
Maddie Benigni, Mercy: Benigni scored her 1,000th career point, going 12 for 12 from the free throw line, with a 32-point performance in a 55-48 win over Foran Friday and scored 39 points in a 75-52 win over Hamden Monday.
Zola Cudjoe, St. Paul: Cudjoe had 22 points, 12 rebounds and six steals in a 46-28 win over Woodland Friday and 20 points and 15 rebounds in a 45-30 win over Seymour Tuesday.
Peyton Kelleher, Cromwell: Kelleher had 25 points in a 49-37 win over North Branford Tuesday.
Kylie Lake, Old Saybrook: Lake had a double-double (17 points, 13 rebounds) and seven blocks on Senior Night in 54-30 win over Portland Tuesday.
Madison Handrahan, Glastonbury: Handrahan scored 28 points, including five 3-pointers, and had eight rebounds and two assists in a 60-50 loss to East Catholic Friday and 22 points, including five 3-pointers, six assists and four steals in a win over E.O. Smith Tuesday.
Kaitlyn Novak, Bacon Academy: Novak scored 21 points and had 10 steals and four assists in a 54-23 victory over East Lyme Friday and 25 points and five rebounds and four assists in a 71-34 win over Waterford Tuesday.
Solana Ortiz, Platt: Ortiz had 26 points, along with 10 rebounds and four assists, in a 42-33 win over Wethersfield Tuesday.
Sadie Passante, Morgan: Passante had 30 points, seven steals and four assists in a 63-50 win over Branford Wednesday and scored 20 points and had five steals in a 43-23 win over East Hampton Tuesday.
Symber Sutton, Innovation: Sutton had 16 points and eight rebounds in a 60-43 win over Cromwell Thursday.
Sophie Tumulis, Stafford: Tumulis had 17 rebounds, 12 points, three steals and three blocks in a 36-31 loss to Tolland Thursday.
Bristol Central (15-5) knocked off Conard 49-46 Tuesday despite a 28-point effort from Conard's Emily Knowles. Molly McMahon hit what proved to be the game-winning 3-pointer for Bristol Central with under a minute left to break a 46-46 tie. Kamaria Bowens had 21 points to lead Bristol Central, which had lost to Conard 52-42 on Jan. 2. Conard (17-3) hadn't lost since Jan. 21.
But Bristol Central's euphoria didn't last long as Bristol Eastern (12-8) beat the crosstown rival Rams 46-38 two days later and the last game of the regular season for both. Bristol Eastern won seven of its last eight games, with only a loss to Conard in the middle.
Conference tournaments start this week, with the CCC tournament starting with first round games Tuesday. East Catholic is the top seed and will host Lewis Mills; Southington is the second seed and host face No. 15 South Windsor and Northwest Catholic is the No. 3 seed and will host No. 14 Newington. The quarterfinals will take place Thursday night, the semifinals Saturday at Southington High and the finals Monday at the University of Hartford. Windsor is the defending champion.

Basketball committee rails against MOV Margin of Victory and neutral locations for state quarterfinal games were the two main topics of discussion during Wednesday's virtual MIAA Basketball Committee meeting. Much of the meeting was spent discussing options for altering the margin of victory cap, which is set at 10 points. 'Our committee suggested 1 [point max MOV] but that hasn't been supported by the [Tournament Management Committee],' said Dover-Sherborn boys' basketball coach Rick Grady , one of the coaches' reps on the committee. 'Maybe we could suggest a smaller number than 10? We've heard of situations where teams didn't foul at the end of games if you're down 4 or 5 and are afraid of losing by 10.' Advertisement Whitman-Hanson athletic director Bob Rodgers , a vocal opponent of the MOV, expressed reticence to changing the number on the fly. 'I will grant that the results have been OK,' Rodgers said. 'I wouldn't want to change it so the results aren't OK, but we're still dealing with MOV. Until it's fixed, I'd rather not touch it, even though I used to be a proponent for making it 1.' Related : Always pragmatic, St. Mary's AD and girls' basketball coach Jeff Newhall stepped in. 'It's a waste of time to try to reduce it to 1, it's not going to happen,' he warned. 'But maybe two possessions plus one? Whether that's 5 or 7? There may be some changes we could make, like in lacrosse where they changed it from 10 to 7.' MIAA liaison Peter Smith explained that the numbers have been crunched with MOV set at 5 and 7, noting that switching to an MOV of 7 would have resulted in the same boys' basketball teams making the tournament in all five divisions, although their seedings would have shifted. On the girls' side, two teams would have moved into the playoff brackets, with two teams moving out across five divisions. 'I've seen [the data] at 5 and 7 and there's very little change,' Newhall said, also noting that running the data with a small boost for wins also produced negligible changes. Related : Advertisement The committee decided to review data of every possible MOV between 1 and 10 before reconvening in the fall to craft a proposal for the TMC. Last fall, the committee voted unanimously for neutral sites in the Round of 8, but were denied by the TMC. But after hockey's quarterfinals were moved to neutral sites, there was hope on the basketball committee that the TMC would reconsider. 'I'm optimistic it could change,' said Newhall. 'It's on the [TMC] docket.' For those data-lovers out there: The 2024-25 MIAA basketball season featured 6,993 regular-season games, followed by 417 tournament games. On the boys' side, 58.4 percent of teams qualified for the tournament, while 62 percent of the girls' teams reached the playoffs. 7. College corner Medfield graduate Jack Goodman , a junior shortstop at Northeastern, was named All-Coastal Athletic Association for a second straight season, earning a spot on the first team with a .333 average, 10 homers, and 49 RBIs. Cabral and Jones tied the Northeastern program record for single-season wins. Walker, a junior righty, was 3-0 with a 1.27 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 42⅔ innings. Jordan Gottesmann , a lefthanded graduate student from Acton-Boxborough, was named to the All-CAA second team and senior Brett Dunham , a North Andover graduate, was an honorable mention. Advertisement Bryant third baseman Pat D'Amico , a St. John's Prep graduate from Lynnfield who previously played at Holy Cross, was named to the All-America second team after hitting .247 with eight homers and 39 RBIs in 43 games.
