Police procession in Southington honors Trooper First Class Aaron Pelletier 1 year after his death

SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — It was one year ago in 2024 when Trooper First Class Aaron Pelletier was fatally struck by a car while on duty. On Friday, a police procession brought flashbacks to that night. Vigil to be held in Southington in memory of Connecticut State Police Trooper First Class Aaron Pelletier 'He had an infectious smile, and he was a friend to everybody who knew him, but more so than that he cared about doing his job and he cared about keeping the public safe,' Sgt. Luke Davis with Connecticut State Police said. Hundreds of people, from law enforcement to family to friends and complete strangers processed up Jude Lane and stood on the bridge overlooking the highway where Pelletier gave his life in the line of duty. 'We are so proud to stand alongside the Pelletier family, and we are so grateful for the support that we have seen, the outpouring we have received,' Cpt. Kate Coney with state police said. At the vigil, widow Dominique Pelletier released photos of their two boys and their retired police K9, showing how their life has changed in one year. She also released a statement that said in part: 'The support we have received has not waivered and the love shown to us is still at the forefront of our lives. Not a day goes by that I don't receive a call, text or message from someone checking in to see how we are doing, and for that I am truly grateful.' Pelletier was doing safety checks on the day of the crash that took his life. 'It's just that one extra stop at the end of his day, a very simple reminder put your seatbelt on, there's a law for a reason, and the law exists for your safety and in course of doing so he lost his life,' Davis said. Staggering number of cancer in younger people gets Yale's attention

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The numbers are staggering: people under 50 facing devastating diagnoses. Specifically, colorectal and breast cancers are significantly rising. In Connecticut, young breast cancer cases are some of the highest in the entire country, 32% above. Is it the environment? The lifestyle of people who live here? Or just a coincidence? The doctors are working to figure it out as patients and their families deal with news they never expected. Southington brewery hosts 'Let's Get Buzzed' fundraiser for kids battling cancer Amber and Zach Jones spent 14 years making a life in Connecticut. Zach was a rising research star at ESPN. Their young son, Silas, adds to their joy, sharing a love of family, togetherness, and baseball. Silas lost his father to cancer 'I could do so many different things with him. Our front yard was a football, soccer, baseball, wiffle ball field,' Silas said. Their family life seemed perfect, but in 2022, their journey took an unexpected turn. 'He had some stomach pains, he thought it was almost like gas,' Amber said. At just 39 years old, Zach and his family weren't prepared for the shocking diagnosis that would come: stage four cancer that had spread from his colon to his liver. 'It was the wildest, most bizarre experience,' Amber said. For the next two years, their lives revolved around surgeries and chemotherapy. 'He wanted to do everything he could, he told me I want to make sure silas knows I did everything possible to be here,' she said. But by the fall of 2024, Zack was too sick to continue treatments. Passing away three days before Christmas at 42. While heartbreaking, Zach's story is part of a growing trend of cancer in young people… Dr. Nancy Borstleman, Yale Early Onset Cancer Program co-founder, said, 'They have been appearing largely within breast cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric…' A trend concerning enough that Yale created a new, 'early onset cancer program' at Smilow Cancer Hospital. 'It's going to take a lot of us putting our heads together to really make some advances in understanding this,' Dr. Veda Giri said. 1 in 29 men were diagnosed with early-onset cancer last year alone. Rates among women, even higher, 1 in 17. 'There's some really fascinating research going on looking at the generational rise of early onset cancers. Looking at Gen X, v. Baby boomers, v. The generation before,' Dr. Veda Giri said. Research out of Columbia goes even deeper, finding a geographical component when it comes to breast cancer specifically. That study shows Connecticut is one of five states with the highest rates of breast cancer in women under 40. It found 41 cases per 100-thousand people in our state. 'Such an important question is the why,' Dr. Giri said. Something Stonington's mother and wife, Meagan Shroder, dealt with firsthand after finding a lump in her breast at just 28. She was not diagnosed until 30, just months after giving birth to a baby boy. Megan is a cancer survivor. 'When you go into the doctor's offices and you're the youngest one there – it feels very isolating,' she said. With no family history, Megan, like so many others, wonders why. 'I remember going into the appointments so optimistic and cheerful, like there's no way, I'm too young,' she said. Meagan found support from the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation, founded by a young Old Saybrook woman who died young from breast cancer. Meagan, Amber and Silas all share their stories to make others feel less alone. 'Every little thing that can increase your risk, try and get it out,' she said. And spread a simple message, learned far too soon. 'Cherish the moments you get with them. You're gonna wish you spent as much time with them as possible. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Girls basketball Week 10: Rocky Hill is young but ready for postseason

The Rocky Hill girls basketball team advanced to the Class MM quarterfinals last year, where the Terriers lost to eventual champion Northwest Catholic. The Terriers had a lot of sophomores on that team, and now they're juniors and have continued their success. Rocky Hill finished the regular season 16-4 and as the sixth seed, will play in the first round of the CCC tournament Tuesday against No. 11 Enfield. 'We're still a young team,' Rocky Hill coach Pete Asadourian said. 'They're meshing at the right time. They're playing well.' Junior Kelsey LaMay leads the team in scoring (21 ppg) but another junior Katie Harding isn't far behind (19 ppg). Rocky Hill lost twice to Southington, which is 19-1 and ranked second in Class LL, and East Catholic, which is ranked first ahead of Rocky Hill in Class MM, and Plainville in early January. 'I think we've shown we can hang with anyone,' Asadourian said. 'Southington is very good. East Catholic, we had a late lead and we blew that. We had leads in all of our games, with the exception of that second Southington game. 'I think it was immaturity; that was one thing we talked about. We are immature from a basketball sense. If we're up, we have to learn how to finish a game.' Urielle Abrokwa, East Catholic: Abrowski scored 21 points in a 60-50 win over Glastonbury Friday. Maddie Benigni, Mercy: Benigni scored her 1,000th career point, going 12 for 12 from the free throw line, with a 32-point performance in a 55-48 win over Foran Friday and scored 39 points in a 75-52 win over Hamden Monday. Zola Cudjoe, St. Paul: Cudjoe had 22 points, 12 rebounds and six steals in a 46-28 win over Woodland Friday and 20 points and 15 rebounds in a 45-30 win over Seymour Tuesday. Peyton Kelleher, Cromwell: Kelleher had 25 points in a 49-37 win over North Branford Tuesday. Kylie Lake, Old Saybrook: Lake had a double-double (17 points, 13 rebounds) and seven blocks on Senior Night in 54-30 win over Portland Tuesday. Madison Handrahan, Glastonbury: Handrahan scored 28 points, including five 3-pointers, and had eight rebounds and two assists in a 60-50 loss to East Catholic Friday and 22 points, including five 3-pointers, six assists and four steals in a win over E.O. Smith Tuesday. Kaitlyn Novak, Bacon Academy: Novak scored 21 points and had 10 steals and four assists in a 54-23 victory over East Lyme Friday and 25 points and five rebounds and four assists in a 71-34 win over Waterford Tuesday. Solana Ortiz, Platt: Ortiz had 26 points, along with 10 rebounds and four assists, in a 42-33 win over Wethersfield Tuesday. Sadie Passante, Morgan: Passante had 30 points, seven steals and four assists in a 63-50 win over Branford Wednesday and scored 20 points and had five steals in a 43-23 win over East Hampton Tuesday. Symber Sutton, Innovation: Sutton had 16 points and eight rebounds in a 60-43 win over Cromwell Thursday. Sophie Tumulis, Stafford: Tumulis had 17 rebounds, 12 points, three steals and three blocks in a 36-31 loss to Tolland Thursday. Bristol Central (15-5) knocked off Conard 49-46 Tuesday despite a 28-point effort from Conard's Emily Knowles. Molly McMahon hit what proved to be the game-winning 3-pointer for Bristol Central with under a minute left to break a 46-46 tie. Kamaria Bowens had 21 points to lead Bristol Central, which had lost to Conard 52-42 on Jan. 2. Conard (17-3) hadn't lost since Jan. 21. But Bristol Central's euphoria didn't last long as Bristol Eastern (12-8) beat the crosstown rival Rams 46-38 two days later and the last game of the regular season for both. Bristol Eastern won seven of its last eight games, with only a loss to Conard in the middle. Conference tournaments start this week, with the CCC tournament starting with first round games Tuesday. East Catholic is the top seed and will host Lewis Mills; Southington is the second seed and host face No. 15 South Windsor and Northwest Catholic is the No. 3 seed and will host No. 14 Newington. The quarterfinals will take place Thursday night, the semifinals Saturday at Southington High and the finals Monday at the University of Hartford. Windsor is the defending champion.
