Actor Danny Dyer has spoken about the moment he realised he needed to give up drugs – when he could not work out how to put his trousers on following a night of partying. Appearing on The Louis Theroux Podcast, the former EastEnders star described the moment he knew he was 'destroying' his life after celebrating a win at the National Television Awards (NTAs).
'I just could not work out how to get my jeans on. I was just sitting on my en-suite toilet trying to work out what leg goes in what,' he told Theroux.
'I've sort of had many of them moments over the years, of me being completely off my head. But that one really resonated with me. It was more because I looked up, my wife was just watching me and she looked shattered and she looked ill.'
Dyer, who has spoken before about his drug abuse, said he knew it was having a bad effect on his wife Jo, as well as their children. He added: 'It was just this moment, I thought, shit, you're going to die. You're going to kill yourself. You're not happy. You're spanking all your money on drugs. You're destroying everything around you.'
Dyer, who has been filming the second series of hit drama Rivals, also spoke of his frustration at being encouraged to talk in an American accent as he tried to build a career in Hollywood a few years ago. He told Theroux that, instead of convincing them with an American accent, 'everyone thought I was Australian'.

Dyer added: 'They wanted me to live there for six months, and I had small children and I hated the fact that they wanted me to speak American all the time, which is what you're meant to do out there.'
He told Theroux that he is extremely proud of his upcoming film, Three Quick Breaths, in which he plays the only role, describing it as maybe 'my Hamlet'. 'We shot it in 10 days in Dublin and I had to learn 15 pages a day,' he said.
'Maybe this was my Hamlet, maybe that narcissist in me thought, can I be the only one in a film? I watched it and I'm really proud of it.'

Zoe Slater left terrified and hiding major secret in EastEnders – as Michelle Ryan returns to Walford after 20 years
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ZOE Slater was a woman on the brink as the circumstances surrounding her shock Walford return began to unravel in the latest episode. Fans of EastEnders were left stunned when it was revealed that Michelle Ryan's character had made a shock return on Monday's episode. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 5 Zoe Slater is hiding a big secret in EastEnders 5 She almost spilled all to Alfie Moon Now, in today's instalment, it was confirmed that she had been staying in a rented flat with Stacey Slater amid what she described as fears for her safety. Stacey had taken her under her wing but was left shocked to see the state of Zoe who appeared to be penniless and living off vodka and vapes. She had racked up hundreds of pounds worth of purchases on Stacey's credit card after robbing her purse causing Stacey to put a call into the fraud department of her bank as well as to Alfie Moon to call for help. When Alfie turned up and saw the state of Zoe, he and Stacey pressed her for more details on her dishevelled state in which she confessed that she was being followed by men in Spain whom she owed money too. She had even be threatened with her life if she was unable to pay them off. However, Zoe failed to reveal exactly who they were or why she owed them cash. Later, she received a text from the supposed men to say they knew she had arrived in London and that they would be hunting her down. Whilst Zoe's distress continued, Stacey was left unconvinced and soon went through Zoe's phone and discovered she'd had more texts from the so-called men in the past hour than the past week. Suspecting it was Zoe herself, Stacey called the number which confirmed it was indeed a burner phone in Zoe's room. It caused Zoe to have a screaming breakdown as she insisted she just needed some cash amid her money woes. But although she'd lied about why, it was evident that Zoe was still holding something back. Lashing out in rage caused concern for Alfie as she smashed Stacey's phone and begged them to "stop it". Attempting to reason with her, he said: "Zoe, I know you're scared, I can see that. "I get it, when life goes to pot, you feel like you've got no one to turn too. 5 She had lied about who she owed money too "But listen to me, I'm here for you, we are family." Sobbing, Zoe responded as she said: "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." As Alfie reassured her, he told her again that he was there for and encouraged her to open up about her secret and the truth behind her Walford return. Zoe confessed she was "so scared" and said she would tell Alfie everything as long as he didn't tell her mother, Kat. If he told her, she added: "I will disappear, I swear." But just as she was about to open up, a knock at the door was heard as Kat began to angirly shout for Alfie who she knew was inside thanks to a mobile tracking up. Kat was, however, none the wiser to Zoe being inside. Will Zoe reveal her secret or is a Slater showdown on the cards? 5 She has been seen in a dishevelled state on the soap

Soap's most harrowing teen storylines We take a look at other harrowing teen soap storylines from soaps Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. Belle Dingle's schizophrenia in Emmerdale - Belle's (Eden Taylor-Draper) traumatic journey in Emmerdale took a dark turn when, after accidentally killing her best friend Gemma at just 16, her mental health began to spiral. The storyline, which saw Belle struggling with her grief and guilt, showcased her battle with hearing Gemma's voice inside her head, leading to a dramatic decline in her well-being. Hannah Ashworth's anorexia in Hollyoaks - Viewers were horrified as they watched Hannah (Emma Rigby), a seemingly innocent teen, spiral into dangerous behavior, starving herself in an attempt to achieve what she thought was the ideal body. As Hannah's condition worsened, the storyline became more intense, culminating in her being hospitalised for two months as she fought for her life. Bethany Platt's grooming ordeal in Coronation Street - Vulnerable schoolgirl, played by Lucy Fallon, was at the centre of one of Corrie's darkest storylines to date when she fell under the spell of her older boyfriend and sexual predator. The controversial scenes saw Nathan groom and manipulate the 16-year-old before coercing her into sleeping with his friends, with one of them raping her. Whitney Dean's abuse from Tony in EastEnders - Since the age of 12, she had been in a twisted relationship with her stepmum Bianca's boyfriend, Tony King. The predator had groomed young Whit (Shona McGarty), making her believe she was in love and planning to run away with him. On her 16th birthday, the traumatised teen finally revealed the years of abuse to Bianca. Tony was swiftly sent to prison sentenced for 13 years.
