The freedom of change
Change is inherently difficult, both for individuals and organisations. Dr Fred Luskin of Stanford University and author of Forgive for Good: A Proven Prescription for Health and Happiness and Stress Free for Good: Ten Proven Life Skills for Health and Happiness, suggests we churn out around 60,000 to 70,000 thoughts a day, with a staggering 90% of them being repetitive. How terrifying is that?
This incessant mental loop can trap us in habitual behaviours, making it a Herculean task to shift our mindset — especially when we're grappling with perfectionism and the desire for certainty.
When leaders call for sweeping changes, they frequently underestimate the emotional resistance born from individual past experiences. This lack of understanding results in initiatives that might look great on paper, but are as effective as a paper parachute. Commitment to change demands a concerted effort to unveil and dismantle the emotional barriers that stand in the way of growth.
Embrace the emotions
Perfectionism is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it can drive excellence; on the other, it fosters self-criticism and unrealistic expectations. The relentless chase for perfection usually stems from a fear of judgement and abandonment, leaving us feeling inadequate when we stumble. It's a shame spiral where anger at our shortcomings collides with a frantic sprint towards goals that are nothing more than (sometimes delusional) mirages.
Letting go of this unforgiving pursuit is essential. Recognise that emotions are part and parcel of the human experience. Life is fluid — if you find yourself in a dip, just remember the self-development work you've done (you have done some, haven't you?) will help you regain your balance faster than ever.
Instead of clamping down on rigid goals that feel more like punishment, focus on establishing emotional priorities. Goals can become destructive if they're seen merely as endpoints that must be achieved at all costs.
Prioritise your emotional wellbeing
The bottom line is that if you want to focus on emotional priorities, you have to cultivate habits that support them. If your goals are to enhance your health or forge better relationships, begin to cultivate habits that support those. The transformative power of a habit isn't in its existence; it's all about intention. If you're just going through the motions, don't bother.
Intentional actions, over time, weave themselves into your routine, crafting a self-sustaining system that genuinely propels you forward. Setting clear intentions means you're not just floating with the prevailing current but steering your course towards outcomes that resonate with your core values. Own your journey, and don't just wait for miraculous change to happen.
In a team setting, fostering change can be achieved through small, focused shifts. Determine a collective objective and choose one behaviour to concentrate on every few weeks.
Frequent reminders, debrief sessions and check-ins will help maintain momentum and accountability. These aren't just routine meetings; they're vital checkpoints that foster growth and resilience within your team. Don't overlook the impact of a dedicated group focused on incremental shifts.

Bianca Amato's journey to become a queen of theatre
Amato's focus is now on rebuilding a strong theatre audience in South Africa. Bianca Amato walked away from Broadway, turned down a steady stream of American screen work, and left behind a career many would still be trying to break into. She came home. Not because the work had dried up. On the contrary, she came back to South Africa to raise a family, and to do the kind of work she wanted to do. Amato spent 15 years in the United States after leaving South Africa in 2002. She returned about eight years ago. 'I left South Africa just after 9/11,' she said. 'And I had an extraordinary time.' During those years, she performed in The Coast of Utopia and Macbeth on Broadway, and featured in Arcadia, Neva, The Broken Heart, Private Lives, and King Lear. She worked with respected directors and actors across New York and regional stages. Her screen credits include a guest appearance on Sex and the City and a lead in Powers on the PlayStation Network. In addition to theatre and television, she voiced more than forty audiobooks, including Philippa Gregory's historical novels and Diane Setterfield's The Thirteenth Tale, which reached number one on The New York Times bestseller list. 'I was on Broadway a few times' 'I did a lot, a lot of theatre in New York and regionally around the United States,' she said. 'Also, I was on Broadway a few times. I worked with amazing people.' She chose to leave that all behind. 'I left New York at a point where my career was really buzzing. I made a choice to come home. It was the right choice for me, it was a strong choice and I'm happy to be here, all the more so now,' she said. 'I wanted to have a baby and for my husband and I it felt really, really appropriate to be back home in South Africa with our family and with support and the community that we have here.' From 1998 to 2001, she played Philippa De Villiers in Isidingo, then one of the country's most watched shows. Her character's relationship with mine manager Derek Nyathi, played by Hlomla Dandala, marked the first interracial romance portrayed on South African television. 'It was wonderful to be part of the slow but healthy process that changed people's attitudes,' she said at the time. The role earned her an Avante Award for best actress. 'I put on my big girl pants' Returning to South Africa meant reassessing what kind of roles were available locally. 'It has been a challenge to find the kind of work that I was able to do over there here,' she said. 'So, I have had to put on my big girl pants and say, 'right, let's create that work then'.' That decision led to the founding of The Quickening Theatre Company with Ken Siewe Chabalala, Charlotte Butler and Paige Bonnen. 'Our objective is to bring really entertaining and beautifully penned and excellently crafted theatre to the South African audiences,' she said. 'We are very excited about the projects that we're going to do and the projects we are doing at the moment.' Part of her focus now is on rebuilding a strong theatre audience. 'What we haven't done in South Africa for a long time is to keep cultivating an audience who appreciates things that may ask a little bit more of you as an audience, that's not completely escapist,' she said. 'But there are so many gorgeous and funny and delicious and interesting and thought-provoking plays out there.' Nothing like really good theatre She said that live performance stands out from other forms of entertainment. 'When you put on a show on Netflix, you're aiming for something that's going to transport you and entertain you. The same can be said for a really good piece of theatre. It's just that it's old-fashioned in that it's live, right there in front of you.' She added that there is a strong case to be made for this. 'I wonder now, given that AI is everywhere, whether or not we're going to start hungering for the fact that we'll know that the person in front of us actually is flesh and blood,' she said. Our interns contribute meaningfully from day one, gaining experience that builds both confidence and capability. Looking ahead, we are also preparing to roll out expanded youth development initiatives, including participation in South Africa's B-BBEE YES programme and a formal graduate intake. These efforts reflect our long-term commitment to helping young talent enter and thrive in the tech sector. Guidance We have also found that mentorship is key. Pairing emerging talent with seasoned engineers and business leads creates a learning loop that benefits both parties. It ensures that institutional knowledge is passed on, and it challenges our senior team to keep learning too. Of course, we cannot do it alone. There are valuable efforts underway at the national level. For example, SETAs, industry bodies, and public-private partnerships are all playing a role. But if we want to create a tech ecosystem that is truly inclusive and future-fit, the private sector needs to step up with urgency and intent. This means more than just hiring interns. It means investing in skills development with a long-term view. It means designing roles that stretch and develop young professionals. And it means creating a culture where continuous learning is embedded in how we work. Confidence in work We believe that African innovation can compete on a global stage. But it starts with building a skills pipeline that is not just competent, but confident. By backing young talent with real opportunities and support, we lay the foundation for a stronger, smarter, and more connected digital economy. And if we get that right, the question will not be whether we have enough skills to meet demand. It will be how far South African innovation can go. Stasie Kombuis owner reacts to drunk Presley Chweneyagae clips
Stasie Kombuis owner, Thato Jele, has shut down social media commentary about his lifestyle lounge being a bad influence on the late actor Presley Chweneyagae. The 40-year-old was laid to rest last weekend after a shock death following 'respiratory complications'. At his funeral, close pal Warren Masemola hinted that Presley loved partying and alcohol and would often surround himself with 'bad friends'. He also implied that establishments like Stasie Kombuis kept the star away from his family. Speaking to Kaya FM, Stasie Kombuis, owner Thato Jele, responded to commentary that his lifestyle lounge and bar was a bad influence on Presley Chweneyagae. He said, 'Presley was a beautiful human being, he loved my place. He personally told me that I was on the right track and that I was running a beautiful place.' Jele also addressed several video clips of an intoxicated Presley Chweneyagae at a groove, which South Africans have presumed to be at Stasie Kombuis. He continued: 'We are very big on family. We do not embarrass our clients. None of the videos that are trending online were taken at my place. 'My place is not a shebeen or a drinking spot. It's home to me and to my clients. That's why people keep coming back. A clip of Presley Chweneyagae intoxicated at a groove has resurfaced after his death. He recalled a time when he travelled to Pretoria to pick up Presley – presumably at the request of his wife – as 'he was being a nuisance' He told funeral-goers: 'He dodged me, I found him at Stasie Kombuis [popular groove in Pretoria].' Warren added that he found Presley with a group of friends who didn't have his best interests at heart.
