Tavares makes permanent Lazio switch
Arsenal have confirmed left-back Nuno Tavares' loan move to Serie A side Lazio has been made permanent.The 25-year-old joined the Gunners from Benfica in July 2021 and made 28 appearances for the club in all competitions.Tavares spent the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons on loan at Marseille and Nottingham Forest respectively before spending last year in Italy.Tavarez' only Arsenal goal came in a 3-1 win over Manchester United at Emirates Stadium in April 2022.

‘I had no idea': Chris Harper happy to share spotlight after Simon Yates banishes Giro d'Italia demons
Australian cyclist Chris Harper is yet to properly soak up the ride of his life and first Grand Tour stage victory by watching a replay of his long-range and daring solo attack over the Colle delle Finestre and up the Sestrière. But the 30-year-old climber won't have to look too hard to find highlights in the future after his ride was a major subplot as the decisive story of the 2025 Giro d'Italia unfolded behind him. Harper arrived in Albania for the opening three stages of the Giro with ambitions to prove himself as a general classification contender. A top-10 placing by the time the three-week race finished in Rome was the realistic goal. But a bout of illness hit the Team Jayco AlUla rider on the second rest day and Harper had to lift himself in the third week just to turn his focus toward chasing a stage win. After working his way into the major breakaways that were all chased down on successive days, Harper thought his race was all but done as the Giro landed in Verrès for the penultimate day and queen's stage with more than 4,500m of climbing over 205km to come. Yet almost by accident, Harper found himself in another break, felt he was on a good day and with a healthy dose of what he calls 'white line fever' set off to conquer one of the most brutal climbs in Italy. Further back, Harper's former teammate Simon Yates, now at Team Visma-Lease a Bike, was dropping Isaac del Toro in the maglia rosa and second-placed Richard Carapaz on the Finestre. As Yates blew the race wide open, his remaining challengers for pink did little more than look at each other, and the former Vuelta a España winner became Harper's main concern. 'I didn't know too much about what was going on behind me, I had no idea,' Harper tells Guardian Australia while enjoying his post-race recovery on Santorini. 'I just knew that Simon was solo and that he was putting quite a bit of time into del Toro and Carapaz. On the Finestre, my sports director said, 'Simon's about five and a half minutes behind,' and then they said, 'Oh, but he's two minutes in front of the other GC guys'. 'In my head I knew he was riding for pink but that also made me more nervous because I knew he was going to push full gas to the line to take as much time as he could. I've seen him on a good day and I know what he can do.' Harper and Yates rode together on Jayco AlUla in 2023 and 2024 with the Australian often his teammate's last support in the mountains, including at last year's Tour de France. Rather than feeling overshadowed by the story of Yates banishing his demons from the 2018 Giro when he cracked on much the same stage as Chris Froome took the maglia rosa away from him, Harper is almost as pleased for his friend as for his own breakthrough triumph. The dual celebrations at the end of stage 20 at Sestrière were a reminder that one of the joys of road cycling can be having more than one winner on the same day. 'I was quite nervous once I pulled away alone, especially when the radio said 'Simon's just caught up with Wout [van Aert] and Wout's chasing now',' Harper says. 'They're pretty calm on the radio but you get a sense from the tone in their voice what's happening, you realise how nervous they are. I knew if I blew up, it would be quite easy for Simon to bring back a lot of time on me. So I just paced myself so I'd have a bit left in the tank for the last two or three kilometres. 'Once I got to the last kilometre, they just said, 'You're going to win it, enjoy it, take a moment'. The Finestra is quite a famous climb so it's definitely a nice one to win. I haven't actually watched the race, so I want to go back and watch it just to see what Simon was doing in the GC group as well. He was my teammate and I worked with him a lot, so it'll be nice to sit down and actually watch the stage, soak it in a bit more as well.' All of it wrapped up into one nice day. It was like all our bad luck went away at the same time, and it was just the perfect day for both of us. The victory was Harper's first since winning a stage and eventually the general classification at the Tour of Japan in 2019, a year before he joined the world tour for the first time with Team Jumbo-Visma. With a first taste of personal success for six years, Harper wants to chase more stages while continuing to explore what he is capable of on GC again at this year's Vuelta. 'I didn't even think about it,' he says. 'My manager made a joke that I celebrated twice, once before the finish line and then after I crossed the line. I haven't won a lot so I don't have a lot of practice. It didn't hurt to get two celebrations in the one.'

Thomas Tuchel says England star looked 'out of rhythm' after Andorra win
Thomas Tuchel said the decision to bench Declan Rice for England's win over Andorra came after the midfielder lacked 'rhythm' in the build-up to the game. England made it three wins from three in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, but ultimately flattered to deceive in their 1-0 win over Andorra. The Three Lions huffed and puffed, dominating the ball for large swathes of the game, but only Harry Kane found his way onto the scoresheet midway through the second half. Still getting to grips with his squad, Tuchel fielded an experimental XI in Barcelona, with Curtis Jones deployed at right-back and Jordan Henderson starting in the heart of England's midfield for the first time since 2023. Rice has been a mainstay of England's midfield for the past few years, but only came on as a late second-half sub, with Tuchel suggesting the decision to bench the Arsenal star was solely based on what he had seen in training prior to the game. 'Declan [Rice] looked a little bit out of rhythm and I think Jordan [Henderson] deserved to play,' Tuchel told BBC Radio 5 Live post-match. 'And also for what Jordan brings to this group, well deserved. We started well and then lost the rhythm and precision and also the energy to be more decisive and score more goals. 'It is necessary that we look at it and then present in detail to the players what we don't like, what we want to do better and what are the standards.' Rice played 52 games in all competitions for Arsenal last season, and is one of many England stars who could have done without this international break at the end of the campaign. But Tuchel insisted that fatigue after a draining season was no excuse for England's lack of urgency against their lowly-ranked opposition on Saturday evening. 'The window is the window, so no excuses of course,' the German said post-match. 'We said many times that the clubs don't like the window, and even for the national teams, it's not an easy window because they come from holidays and long seasons. But still, I think we can and have to do better in the 90 minutes. 'We played 25 minutes where I had the feeling it was a matter of time before we created chances and scored, but we lost this momentum completely in the last 20 minutes of the first half. 'Started okay again for the first 15 minutes of the second half, but we lost it again. It was a lack of energy and quality at the end of both halves and I think it's the most honest thing to admit it and not talk around it. 'We expect more and we can deliver more and we'll try to take this as a learning and do better as quickly as possible.' Kane's second-half strike saw England's captain notch up his 450th career goal, but the Bayern Munich striker admitted his side must be better regardless of the schedule. More Trending 'It's not one that many will remember and we had good spells but we take the three points and move on,' he told ITV post-match. 'We were probably not good enough on the ball and it gave them some confidence and then the last five or 10 minutes, we have to stop them. 'We need to be better for sure. June is never an easy camp and we have people coming in after long seasons. We have a friendly on Thursday we can learn from again. Alejandro Garnacho faces little prospect of a future with Manchester United following his explosive fallout with Ruben Amorim and a switch to Saudi Arabia could potentially be on the cards Manchester United misfit Alejandro Garnacho could be offered an escape route from Old Trafford by Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr. The Argentine is being discussed as an alternative target to Liverpool winger Luis Diaz after the Premier League champions made it clear that the Colombian is still part of Arne Slot 's plans when they were sounded out by Barcelona about their intentions for the 28-year-old. Al-Nassr have told former Kop favourite Sadio Mane that he can leave the club this summer - and want a top-class replacement. With Diaz now appearing set to stay at Anfield, the Saudis are now exploring the possibility of offering Garnacho the chance to link up again with his boyhood hero Cristiano Ronaldo. The Reds have also had interest from Saudi about Jadon Sancho after Chelsea sent the former England winger back to Manchester following his season-long loan at Stamford Bridge. And with United boss Ruben Amorim looking to clear the decks for a summer rebuild, Inter Milan have made contact with United about the possibility of taking misfiring £72million striker Rasmus Hojlund back to Italy. The beaten Champions League finalists want to take the 20-year-old former Atlalanta forward on-loan next season but are willing to agree to a £38million obligation-to-buy next year. That would save on Hojlund's £90,000-a-week wages. After telling Amorim that his budget for new players will be beefed up by cash generated from sales, there is also another potential money-maker in the pipeline. Former boss Erik ten Hag remains a big admirer of Antony and is weighing up whether to take the £80million Brazilian winger with him to Bayer Leverkusen after his successful loan spell with Real Betis. Betis don't have the £35million it will cost to keep Antony permanently, while Leverkusen will bank in excess of £110million for Florian Wirtz once they have settled on a fee with Liverpool. But it's Garnacho who is likely to give United their biggest pay-day. The Old Trafford club rejected a £40million bid from Napoli in January. But Amorim told the Madrid-born Argentina international to find a new club following a row in the aftermath of the Europa League Final defeat by Tottenham last month. United have already started splashing the cash with the £62.5million capture of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and will have to get close to that fee if they are to prise Bryan Mbeumo away from Brentford. The Reds missed out on a £100million pay-day when captain Bruno Fernandes turned down a £700,000-a-week contract with Al Hilal last week.
