Paris St Germain sets sights on new stadium, inspired by Los Angeles' cutting-edge venues

Malay Mail15-06-2025
LOS ANGELES, June 15 — Paris St Germain is drawing inspiration from the success of new state-of-the-art venues in Los Angeles as the Champions League title winners begin the process of building a new stadium for the team, CEO Victoriano Melero said.
PSG has outgrown the 48,000-capacity Parc des Princes, and team officials will spend a year studying potential sites in Massy and Poissy with an eye toward offering a variety of entertainment options, Melero said.
'The next challenge is a new stadium,' Melero told Reuters in Los Angeles ahead of PSG's Club World Cup match today in Pasadena.
'For one year we're going to go into an analysis and make a choice for our future, and we're inspired by what is going on in the US with sports facilities,' he said.
'One example here is SoFi Stadium. It's incredible and much more than a sports facility — it really is part of entertainment and shows. So that is what we really want to push to diversify our revenue.'
SoFi Stadium, a technological marvel that opened in 2020, is home to the NFL's Rams and Chargers and has hosted concerts by artists like Taylor Swift and Beyonce. It will play a key role in next summer's World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The US$5 billion stadium is located in Hollywood Park, a growing commercial and residential area. The 70,000-capacity indoor-outdoor stadium sits next to Intuit Dome, the high-tech NBA arena that opened last year.
PSG is looking at Massy, south of Paris, and Poissy, west of the French capital, as potential sites for a new stadium. The team will play Parc des Princes for the foreseeable future while the new stadium is built.
US fans and investors have played a vital role in the stunning success of the club both on and off the field, said Adrien Frier, the French consul-general in Los Angeles.
'Paris St Germain is what you would call in the tech sector a unicorn, and it's a unicorn that has some American blood in it,' he said at a reception honouring the team in Beverly Hills, where the Champions League trophy was on display.
PSG has an estimated five million fans in the US and has benefited from its high-profile partnership with Nike's iconic Air Jordan brand.
US-based Arctos Partners holds 12.5 per cent of the shares of the team, with majority owner Qatar Sports Investments owning the remaining 87.5 per cent for a club that is valued at US$4.4 billion.
Melero said the team's ambitions are only growing.
'We wrote the story of the club with that cup,' he said, gesturing toward the gleaming trophy.
'And right now the next move is to write the story of football with this very young team.' — Reuters

Soccer-Real Madrid manager Alonso promises action over words ahead of LaLiga debut

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Semi Final - Paris St Germain v Real Madrid - MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S. - July 9, 2025 Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso reacts REUTERS/Lee Smith/File Photo MADRID (Reuters) -Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso said on Monday he wanted his team's performance on the pitch to do the talking for him as he begins his first LaLiga campaign at home against Osasuna on Tuesday. Former Bayer Leverkusen coach Alonso, loved by Real fans for his trophy-laden playing years at the Bernabeu and with Spain, has been charged with reviving a Madrid side that ended last season without a major trophy. In the Club World Cup, which was Alonso's first competition as Real coach, they were knocked out by Paris St Germain in a 4-0 semi-final loss last month. Real, under Italian Carlo Ancelotti, finished four points behind LaLiga champions Barcelona and failed to retain their Champions League crown after a quarter-final exit. They also lost the Copa del Rey final to bitter rivals Barca. "I'm more about doing than talking," Alonso told reporters. "Making promises before you act doesn't usually work in football. Just saying it is not going to make it happen. We want to start down that path tomorrow. "We are really excited and want to bring that energy to the stadium and earn their (the fans') support." Alonso has bolstered Real's defence with England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold joining from Liverpool along with Bournemouth's 20-year-old Spain centre-back Dean Huijsen and left back Alvaro Carrera from Benfica. The reinforcements address last season's defensive troubles that deflated Real's title challenge. Defender Dani Carvajal, who is easing his way back after last season's ACL injury, has been named in Real's squad to face Osasuna. "It's great competition for the players, and I love that we have two who can play in each position," said Alonso. "Sometimes I will have to rotate. Carvajal is getting closer and closer to his best, and that's very good for the squad." However, Real will be without Antonio Ruediger (suspended) as well as injured left back Ferland Mendy, midfielders Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham plus forward Endrick. Alonso also discussed Real's decision to denounce plans for a Barcelona-Villarreal LaLiga match in Miami in December. Real have warned that the proposal could undermine football's competitive balance and vowed to petition soccer's governing bodies to block the move. The December 20 fixture, approved by the Spanish Football Federation last week, could become the first LaLiga match held abroad and the first European league game in the United States. It requires approval from UEFA, US Soccer, CONCACAF and FIFA. "I very much agree with the club's (Real's) statement. If the rules are to be changed, it must be by unanimous agreement of all the participants (in the league). Otherwise, it cannot be done," Alonso said. Neymar in tears after suffering biggest career defeat

His Santos team lost 6-0 to Vasco in matchday 20 of the Brazilian league. 18 Aug 2025 09:38pm Neymar left the pitch in tears after suffering the biggest defeat of his career on Sunday evening. Photo: GETTY BERLIN - Neymar left the pitch in tears after suffering the biggest defeat of his career on Sunday evening, reported German Press Agency (dpa). His Santos team lost 6-0 to Vasco in matchday 20 of the Brazilian league. Previously, his worst setbacks had been 4-0 defeats. The first one came when Santos played against Barcelona in the Club World Cup final in 2011. After moving to Barcelona, he suffered a 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16 in 2017. Neymar sat on the ground immediately after the final whistle and broke into tears. His teammates offered to help him get up, but he refused. Before leaving the pitch, the Brazilian international was seen sobbing while being embraced by Vasco coach Fernando Diniz. He later briefly spoke to reporters and said that the defeat was "embarassing" and that "everyone will have something to think about tonight". "I've never been through something like that in my life. I cried out of anger. Unfortunately I can't help in every way. Today was s**t, that's the reality," he said. Santos are 15th in the standings and sacked coach Cleber Xavier after the heavy defeat to Vasco. Neymar, 33, returned to his boyhood club Santos in January after cutting short his stay with Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. His current deal runs until the end of 2025. - BERNAMA-DPA

Soccer-Redemption-seeking Inter gamble on rookie Chivu

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Round of 16 - Inter Milan v Fluminense - Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina, U.S. - June 30, 2025 Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu before the match REUTERS/Agustin Marcarian/File Photo (Reuters) -Inter Milan enter a new era this season by entrusting inexperienced coach Cristian Chivu to heal the wounds of the previous campaign and restore confidence to a side left reeling from the collapse of their treble bid. Last season, Inter's title defence crumbled in the final stretch as they lost out on the Scudetto to Napoli by a point. Their domestic struggles were compounded by a Coppa Italia semi-final defeat by city rivals AC Milan but worse was to come. The campaign ended in brutal fashion, with a 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain, a result that marked the end of Simone Inzaghi's four-year spell at the helm. In a bold move, the club opted for inexperience to lead the next phase. Chivu, an ex-Inter player who spent six years managing the club's youth teams, replaced Inzaghi despite having coached just 13 senior matches, guiding Parma to Serie A safety last term. The Romanian began his tenure by taking Inter to the last 16 at the Club World Cup, which gave him the chance to assess two new signings — 21-year-old Croatian midfielder Petar Sucic and Brazilian winger Luis Henrique. But the real challenge begins now, as domestic and European campaigns loom large. YOUNG GUNS While Inter have retained the core of their experienced squad, Chivu's arrival offers hope to new signings and younger players eager to make their mark. He already has a strong connection with striker Francesco Pio Esposito, who he coached with Inter's youth teams. After an impressive loan spell at Serie B side Spezia, the 20-year-old returned to Inter and scored on his first start at the Club World Cup. "Our bond is one of a lot of recognition and gratitude on my part, we have a special bond since we came up together," Esposito said after netting in a pre-season match against Monza. "His (Chivu's) first year on the bench was with me in the Under-14s, then we met again in the Primavera and now here in the first team at Inter." French 21-year-old forward Ange-Yoan Bonny, who worked under Chivu at Parma, has also joined Inter, with the club still hoping to bring in further signings, such as Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman. With a blend of seasoned campaigners and emerging talent, Inter approach the new season with cautious optimism. Chivu's deep ties to the club and his proven track record in youth development offer a sense of continuity. For a team that came agonisingly close to glory last year, only tangible success will justify the decision of handing the reins to a rookie and dispel the lingering doubts from a campaign that promised everything but delivered nothing.
