Strike brings life to a standstill in Kozhikode district

The Hindu10-07-2025
: The nation-wide general strike called by a coalition of 10 prominent trade unions in protest against the Union government's alleged 'anti-labour policies' brought normal life to a standstill in Kozhikode district on Wednesday. Trade union workers forcibly shut several shops, offices and commercial establishments alleging that the 'non-cooperation' was endorsing the anti-labour policies.
Kerala State Road Transport Corporation's attempt to operate local services in Kozhikode failed to take off amidst the intensified protest. A group of trade union workers continuously staged sit-in front of the KSRTC bus stand and the depot in Kozhikode city to obstruct the service. However, some of the long distance services were permitted as usual for the stranded passengers.
'The trade union workers who gathered near the KSRTC stand were not even ready to cooperate with the pick-and-drop service offered by a few private vehicle operators to stranded patients. There was mild tension in the area as the protesters accused the service operators of collecting money and permitting all types of passengers in the name of hospital service,' said a home guard who was on duty near the spot. He also said there were attempts to damage the vehicle.
Attempts to block vehicles and forcibly shut shops created a tense situation in the rural areas of Kozhikode. At Mukkom, the protesters locked horns with several bank employees, government officials and operators of commercial establishments alleging poor cooperation to the national strike. Some of them barged into the office of the Assistant Education Officer at Mukkom and threatened an employee who refused to leave the premises.
'Even the fish merchants were threatened to stop the sale in Mukkom and surrounding areas. If they had not closed the outlets, the protesters would have poured kerosene on the stock,' said a local merchant association leader from Mukkom. He said some of the protesters were found using rude and offensive language to create a scary situation.
As public transportation was paralysed, several passengers were stranded at Kozhikode railway station, where the taxi operators also kept off the road expressing solidarity with the strike. Many of them left home by personally arranged private vehicles. Though a few auto-rickshaw drivers turned up early in the morning, they too disappeared after a few hours' service following the opposition from trade union leaders.
Meanwhile, the free ride offered by a group of volunteers under 'Helping hands of Kozhikode' came to the help of many stranded senior citizens. Several young volunteers were found joining the team with their scooters and motorcycles to support the initiative.
There were heightened security arrangements on the part of Kozhikode city police who deployed additional patrol squads to cover sensitive areas where the trade union workers remained active throughout the day. They said no major incidents of violence were reported till late in the evening.

Lakhimpur Kheri violence: SC questions UP Police inaction on witness' complaint of threat, bribe

The Supreme Court on Thursday questioned the Uttar Pradesh Police for not acting on a witness' complaint that he was threatened with 'dire consequences' and offered a bribe not to testify in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case involving former Union minister Ajay Mishra's son Ashish Mishra, Live Law reported. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan and N Kotiswar Singh directed the police to verify the allegations. On June 20, Baljinder Singh filed a written complaint alleging that an unidentified person offered him Rs 1 lakh and threatened him with consequences if he testified in the case, Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the complainant, told the court. Bhushan added that despite the written complaint, no first information report had been registered, Live Law reported. The Uttar Pradesh Police reportedly claimed that Singh had not appeared in person, which is why the FIR was not filed. The court said this explanation was unsatisfactory. 'In case the complainant has been reluctant in coming forward in support of his complaint, some senior police officer can be deputed to visit the complainant…to verify if complaint has been made by him,' Live Law quoted the bench as saying. 'If such contents are acknowledged it is imperative for police to investigate.' The court also directed the senior superintendent of police in Lucknow to verify the complaint and file an affidavit along with a fresh status report. The case pertains to the death of eight persons, including four farmers, on October 3, 2021, as violence had broken out after a vehicle belonging to Ashish Mishra had allegedly run over a group of demonstrators. The violence had taken place in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh during a protest against the Union government's farm laws that were later repealed. During the hearing on Thursday, Bhushan also said that if Singh's allegations were found to be credible, Ashish Mishra's bail would have to be cancelled. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court in July 2024. Ashish Mishra's counsel opposed this, claiming the allegations lacked evidence. He told the court that 20 witnesses had already been examined by the trial court, while another 20 had been dropped by the prosecution. He also claimed that although the trial court was hearing the case thrice a month, 'nobody turns up'. While Bhushan requested a day-to-day hearing, the bench declined, saying it could impact other pending cases.

The Eastern Growth Corridor offers room for families and first-time buyers. Backed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and the Smart Cities Mission, the region is witnessing coordinated infrastructure investment and massive employment growth. Our current priorities include constructing new roads and infrastructure, reducing traffic congestion, and advancing airport development. -Murlidhar Mohol, Union Minister of State Compared to the saturated and over-priced western suburbs, the Eastern Growth Corridor offers room for families and first-time buyers. The airport and railway station are also within 15 to 25 minutes. The Maharashtra state government is set to disburse Rs. 17,000 cr. for land acquisition intended for major infrastructure projects. Close to Rs. 9000 cr. is allocated to the Pune Ring Road project. The Purandar airport project has also gained momentum with land acquisition set to be completed by October 2025. We see the same pattern emerging in Eastern Pune. As infrastructure rapidly develops - new ring roads, metro lines and the upcoming international airport - large-scale, well-planned communities like Magnacity will play a central role in defining the skyline and quality of life. - Manish Jain, MD, Kumar Realty All infrastructure projects are aimed at boosting the connectivity quotient of the Eastern Growth Corridor. Karnataka bus strike: Notices to over 17,000 employees

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has served show-cause notices to around 8,000 of its employees for participating in the August 5 strike, which was called in defiance of the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), 1981. Across the four State-run transport corporations — KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC and KKRTC — a total of nearly 17,000 notices were issued on August 6, a day after the strike, officials confirmed. The strike was part of a State-wide agitation led by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Road Transport Corporation (RTC) employees, who launched an indefinite protest from 6 a.m. on August 5. While Bengaluru city saw minimal disruption with a 100% bus operation rate, the rest of Karnataka witnessed significant service disruptions. The overall operational efficiency across the State was reported to be 71.9%. Officials said the show-cause notices were issued to those who failed to report for duty on August 5 despite ESMA, 1981 being in force, and the Karnataka High Court directing the unions to call off the protest. 'We are awaiting responses from the employees. Action will be taken based on the replies to the notices,' a senior Transport Department official said. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy defended the issuance of notices, terming it a routine procedure when employees skip work despite ESMA, 1981 being in enforce. 'This is not unique to our department. Even health, education, and police departments, if ESMA, 1981, is in effect and employees take part in a strike, notices are issued,' Mr. Reddy explained to The Hindu. The Minister added that there was no cause for alarm among employees. 'In 2021, during the 15-day RTC strike, around 2,500 employees were suspended. This was only a half-day to one-day strike with fewer participants. So, there won't be any major consequence,' he said. However, Mr. Reddy expressed disappointment over the defiance of court direction by the RTC unions. 'It was wrong to go ahead with the strike despite the High Court's directions. At the very least, the court should have been respected,' he said, adding that the government would always comply with legal directions in such matters. Strike caused ₹20 crore loss Mr. Reddy said that the one-day strike by RTC employees had resulted in an estimated loss of nearly ₹20 crore for the transport corporations. 'This kind of disruption, even if for just a day, has a significant financial impact. The corporations operate on tight margins, and any drop in service affects not just daily revenue but also the public who depend on these services. Officials are currently going through the data and compiling detailed reports to assess the exact financial losses incurred across all four transport corporations,' Mr. Reddy said. The JAC's primary demands include implementation of a revised salary structure effective from January 1, 2024, and the release of pending arrears for 38 months covering January 2020 to February 2023. The unions also want the revised pay scale to remain valid until December 31, 2027. In addition to salary issues, the employees have sought an increase in various allowances, enhanced medical benefits, and regularisation of contract-based drivers and technical staff. They have demanded that electric buses be operated only by permanent staff and have opposed the involvement of contract workers in e-bus operations. During a meeting held on August 4, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had offered to release arrears for 14 months if the strike was withdrawn. However, the JAC rejected the proposal, standing firm on their demand for full settlement of 38 months' worth of dues. The strike by JAC was eventually postponed following the Karnataka High Court's directions on August 5.
