BBC News20-06-2025
Luis Domingos - a Portugal wheelchair basketball international - has been called into England's wheelchair rugby league national performance squad.Domingos, who plays club rugby for Wheelchair Championship side Castleford Tigers, is one of three uncapped players in a 17-strong squad hoping to win places on an autumn tour of Australia.Hull FC's Josh Edwards and Halifax Panthers' Finlay O'Neill, with Domingos, are among nine players added to the initial list of eight who were selected in May.From that group, head coach Coyd will pick a final squad of 10 to fly to Australia in October for a four-match tour. That tour will culminate in a two-Test series against Australia on 30 October and 2 November, with both matches in Gold Coast. They will warm up with two matches against state sides - New South Wales in Sydney on 24 October and Queensland on the Sunshine Coast on 27 October.Domingos played wheelchair rugby league for Leeds before switching to basketball, then returned to join Castleford, and scored the winning try as they beat North Wales Crusaders to win the Wheelchair Challenge Trophy - for second-tier clubs - in April.Coyd said: "He's a really exciting athlete in his chair and is now keen to test himself in wheelchair rugby league again after representing Portugal in basketball – quite a coup for our programme."O'Neill helped Halifax beat London Roosters in last Saturday's Wheelchair Challenge Cup final - and all three uncapped call-ups made an impact in two recent trials at the University of York. Two more members of Halifax's cup-winning side - Nathan Holmes and captain-coach Wayne Boardman - are among the nine added to Coyd's squad. The other four to join up are Roosters pair Mason Billington and Jason Owen, Edwards's Hull FC team-mate Tristan Norfolk and Sheffield Eagles' Chris Haynes.

Fans fume after Community Shield final between Liverpool and Crystal Palace was put behind a paywall

Fans have reacted angrily after the Community Shield was put behind a paywall. For the first time since 2021 the annual curtain raiser was shown on non-terrestrial television, with TNT Sports screening the Wembley fixture between FA Cup winners Crystal Palace and Premier League champions Liverpool. The shift was part of the new deal between the FA signed with the broadcaster to show the FA Cup in March. It includes some free-to-air matches on other channels. Angry, would-be viewers flocked to social media to criticise the move, pointing out that it appeared at odds with the ethos of the Community Shield, from which proceeds are handed to charities. 'This is a disgrace,' said one, 'this is a game that should be free and accessible to everyone'. Leon Legge, the former Cambridge United and Port Vale defender, joined the chorus of outrage. For the first time since 2021 the annual curtain raiser was shown on non-terrestrial television 'So the Community Shield is on today, yet the whole of the football community can't watch it unless you have subscription to TNT,' he posted on X. Others described the decision as ironic, with one stating: 'The Community Shield cannot be seen by the community, apart from a relatively tiny number of TNT Sports viewers. Not even the highlights anywhere else. Poor.'

Liberty's Breanna Stewart targets return before end of month

August 10 - New York Liberty star forward Breanna Stewart is bidding to return to the court before her 31st birthday. That's Aug. 27, if you're counting the days or planning to send a card. The two-time WNBA MVP sustained a bone bruise in her right knee during New York's 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on July 26. "I feel great. I just finished working out on the court in the back," Stewart said. "And it's really just kind of giving my leg, the bone, a little bit of time while we have it. But hoping to be back sooner than later and really just wanting to be back with my team." Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello previously set late August as a tentative timeline for Stewart's return. "We want to be smart with it," Brondello said. "If we can get her back at the end of August, I think that's great. It's big picture ... so when she's ready. But keep it fresh for the playoffs. I know she'll be back before then. How early she gets back before the end of the (regular) season, I don't know." Stewart is averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 24 games (all starts) this season. A seven-time All-Star, Stewart was selected as the WNBA MVP in 2018 and 2023, the Finals MVP in 2018 and 2020 and the 2016 Rookie of the Year. Stewart has been on league championship teams with the Seattle Storm (2018, 2020) and Liberty (2024). --Field Level Media
