DK Congress issues show cause notices to Shahul Hameed, K. Ashraf
The Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee (DKDCC) on Saturday, May 31, issued notices to its minority wing president K.K. Shahul Hameed and former Mangaluru Mayor K. Ashraf to show cause why disciplinary action should not be initiated against them for painting the party in bad light.
In separate notices to the two leaders, DKDCC General Secretary Vikas Shetty said their reported move to tender resignations to party positions in protest against the alleged inaction of the State government on Abdul Rahiman murder case has caused embarrassment to Congress even at the National level. Being senior leaders of the party, it was their responsibility to convince community members about the steps being taken by the Congress and the State government to ensure justice to the victims and safety to all.
In the notice to Mr. Hameed, the DCC said MLCs Manjunatha Bhandary and Ivan D'Souza had contacted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan, Chief Minister's Political Secretary Nazeer Ahmed and senior leader B.K. Hariprasad to air the grievances of Muslim community members in Dakshina Kannada. Despite the senior Party leaders assuring Mr. Hameed to take all necessary action and asking him not to proceed with holding any meeting or tendering resignation, the latter went ahead with them.
Mr. Ashraf was told that he had issued statements asking community members not to meet the district in charge Minister during his visit to Dakshina Kannada and also had spoken low of the Minister. Besides being a responsible representative of the government, the Minister was also a senior leader of the party, the notice said.
The statements and actions of both the leaders were against the party discipline, Mr. Shetty said asking them to respond to the notices within seven days.

US lawmaker under fire for protesting Sikh prayer in Congress
The TOI correspondent from Washington: A racist Republican lawmaker known for making inflammatory statements is under fire after misidentifying a Sikh religious leader as Muslim and declaring he should never have been allowed to deliver the morning prayer in Congress in a country she falsely claimed was "founded as a Christian nation. There are more than 500,000 Sikhs in the US, according to Sikh Advocacy groups, although the 2020 US census reported only 70,697 respondents identifying as Sikh. Many of them are in California's Central Valley, where some towns have had Sikh mayors and Punjabi is commonly spoken. The GOP also has at least two prominent Sikhs in leadership positions: Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and former Trump campaign legal advisor and US assistant attorney general for the civil rights division Harmeet Dhillon. Raghubar slams govt for non-implementation of PESA Act
Dumka: Former chief minister Raghubar Das on Saturday criticised the state govt for being indifferent towards the implementation of the Panchayats (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) (PESA) Act, 1996, in the state. Das said, "The tribal society has been deprived of the benefits of the Union govt funds due to the non-implementation of the PESA Act though the community comprises the major support base of JMM, which is the ruling party in the state govt coalition. Jharkhand lost the Rs 1,400crore allotted by the central finance commission in the 2024-25 financial year as the state govt failed to introduce the PESA Act during its subsequent terms. The situation persisted even after JMM promised the electorate to implement the PESA Act in its election manifesto." "The implementation of the PESA Act would ensure 'Abua Raj' in real term as it would provide the traditional self-rule system of the tribal society a legal status in the 13 districts, comprising 112 blocks, which fall under the scheduled areas.
