Ayushman Bharat services start at private hospital in Delhi

Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday launched Ayushman Bharat services at Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital. At an event to mark Cancer Survivor Month, Gupta also inaugurated a new 3D digital mammography unit and announced a major push toward preventive care for women. The hospital will offer 10,000 free cancer screenings — 5,000 mammography and 5,000 Pap smear tests — as part of a women's health campaign. The move enables eligible patients to access free cancer care under the Centre's Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), which provides health insurance cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year to vulnerable populations. 'This unit is specially designed for the early detection of breast cancer in women, enabling timely treatment. Equipped with fully digital technology, it ensures quick and accurate diagnosis using the latest medical equipment. Cancer is a disease that causes emotional turmoil for entire families when it strikes. However, advancements in medical science today have made early detection and effective treatment possible,' Gupta said. To improve outreach, the hospital also announced the rollout of a mobile diagnostic van equipped with mammography and lab services. It will travel across Delhi to underserved areas, offering clinical breast exams, cervical cancer screening, and lifestyle counselling. Ayushman Bharat is a flagship health scheme of the government aimed at achieving health coverage. On April 5, an MoU was inked with the Union ministry of health and family welfare to implement the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). With this, Delhi has become the 35th state to adopt the scheme. Dr Emmanuel Rupert, managing director and group CEO of Narayana Health, said the new initiatives aim to combine advanced technology with strong community outreach to improve early detection.

Male deaths spike in AP's 25-44 age group: CSR data

Visakhapatnam: Days after the Union govt released the 2021 civil registration system (CRS) data, it unveiled the 2022 CRS figures this week. An analysis of CRS datasets spanning the past decade reveals that male deaths in the 15-54-year age group have consistently outnumbered female deaths in AP, with the gap widening over time. In 2015, the male-to-female death ratio was relatively low at approximately 1:07, indicating near parity. By 2022, it increased to about 1:5, with male deaths in certain age groups — particularly 25-34 and 35-44 — more than doubling those of females. While a general excess in male mortality is common across age groups, the magnitude and persistence of this disparity in the working-age population, particularly within the 25-44 bracket, are significantly greater than in other cohorts. This distinct pattern strongly suggests that the underlying causes of mortality during these productive years disproportionately affect males. While there was no significant difference in 2015, a marked shift began in 2016 and continued thereafter. By 2022, males aged 35-44 were dying at a rate 2.52 times that of females, while the 25-34 group recorded a ratio of 2.42. The 15-24 age group also experienced a moderate increase in disparity, rising from 1.07 in 2015 to 1.87 in 2022. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo However, the sharpest divergence was observed among 25-44-year-olds, where male deaths began consistently doubling female deaths. For instance, the 25-34 age group exhibited a male-to-female death ratio exceeding 2:1 from 2017 onwards—approximately 2.1 in 2018, 2.4 in 2021, and 2.42 in 2022—making it one of the most disproportionately affected demographics. This sustained ratio above 2:1 is a significant and alarming trend, indicating that for every female death, more than two males die in this crucial age group. Similarly, the 35–44 age group maintained a consistently high male-to-female death ratio, often exceeding 2:1, with figures around 2.36 in 2018 and 2.52 in 2022. In contrast, the 44-54 age group, while still showing elevated male mortality, had slightly lower ratios—2.01 in 2018, 1.73 in 2021, and 1.88 in 2022. Dr K Rambabu, director of Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences, said that the persistent high male mortality among younger adults, particularly in the 25–34 age group, likely reflects increased trauma cases, suicides, occupational hazards, and external causes such as road accidents. "Early-onset non-communicable diseases further compound male health risks, as cardiovascular and metabolic disorders typically manifest about a decade earlier in men than in women, driving higher mortality in the 35–44 age group. These outcomes are exacerbated by behavioural and systemic factors, including greater risk-taking, lower health-seeking behaviour, and higher dropout rates from primary healthcare, which intensify the burden of otherwise treatable conditions among men," Dr. Rambabu added. General secretary of Praja Arogya Vedika, an association working for the healthcare needs of the public, T Kameshwar Rao urged the state govt to review and analyse the data and investigate the possible causes of the increased male mortality in the middle-aged groups. How will the Ahmedabad plane crash victims be identified as families await answers amid tragic aftermath?

DNA Testing: A Crucial Step in Victim Identification Scientific Process Behind DNA Matching Scene of the Crash and Current Relief Measures In the wake of the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, authorities are now focused on the grim task of identifying the deceased. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, en route to London, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The massive scale of the tragedy has complicated identification efforts, requiring the use of DNA testing to determine the identities of the bodies charred beyond recognition, officials have turned to DNA profiling as the primary method for confirming the identities of those who lost their lives. Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed in the media briefing that DNA sampling is currently underway, and identification will only be finalized after this process is Dwivedi, Principal Secretary of Gujarat's Health Department, stated that DNA testing is being conducted at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad. Families of victims have been asked to submit DNA samples, particularly parents and children of those presumed dead. These samples are essential for comparison against tissue retrieved from the crash are being collected at Kasoti Bhavan of BJ Medical College, with special provisions made at Civil Hospital. To assist families, helpline numbers—6357373831 and 6357373841—have been issued for inquiries related to victims and those per DNA identification works by comparing Short Tandem Repeats (STRs)—repeating sequences in DNA that differ among individuals. While most of the human genome is similar across people, these STR regions vary and allow scientists to distinguish individuals. In India, nine core STR loci are routinely used for forensic identification. By matching these regions between samples from crash victims and their relatives, forensic teams can accurately confirm this method is highly reliable, it is not instantaneous. Extracting viable DNA from remains and running comparative analyses can take days, especially in mass casualty situations. Moreover, the emotional toll on families awaiting confirmation adds another layer of urgency and from the crash site showed the aircraft engulfed in smoke and flames, with debris scattered over residential quarters near the airport. Prime Minister Narendra Modi swiftly directed Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu to oversee rescue efforts on the ground.
