Mutiara Line LRT construction begins as SRS Consortium gets NTP
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow described the development as a key milestone for the state's first LRT project.
'On behalf of the Penang government, I would like to express our gratitude for the issuance of the official notice given. With this, the construction phase will proceed as scheduled,' he said in a statement.
Initial construction works will involve utility relocation, road widening, earth piling, and site preparation across approved locations along the Mutiara Line.
The state government is also awaiting the tender results for the CMC2 Package, covering the Macallum to Penang Sentral route, as well as the rail system package for the entire line.
Chow highlighted several project milestones achieved this year, including the groundbreaking at Bandar Sri Pinang Station, SRS Consortium's appointment as turnkey contractor for CMC1 in January, and the latest NTP issuance.
To ensure transparency, the state government will introduce a strategic communication platform and feedback line for all mega infrastructure projects in Penang.
'The state government calls on all stakeholders, especially the people of Penang, to provide full cooperation throughout the implementation of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2031,' he added.
The 29.5-kilometre Mutiara Line LRT will feature 21 stations, improving connectivity between Penang Island and the mainland while easing road congestion.
The main route spans from Pulau Tambakan Selatan to Penang Sentral and Komtar Station, with trains operating on a rotating schedule. - Bernama

He said the state's economy is expected to remain robust, driven by high-tech industries such as electronics, semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI), supported by ongoing infrastructure upgrades by the state government. Among the key federal-led mega projects seen as future catalysts are the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project and the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Expressway, which are expected to improve connectivity significantly, ease tourist access and strengthen investment support. On tourism, Tun Ramli highlighted that Penang's competitive edge lies not only in its scenic charm but in its heritage-based tourism, ranging from colonial architecture to deep-rooted customs and diverse culinary traditions reflecting the state's multiracial identity. 'Heritage here isn't just about buildings, it's a way of life. Like the Taj Mahal in India, which has drawn crowds for centuries, Penang's heritage continues to captivate people from all over. The Penang International Airport recorded nearly 2 million passenger movements in the first quarter of 2025, a 69.55 per cent increase from the same period last year. International passenger numbers rose by over 80 per cent, while domestic passengers increased by more than 57 per cent. Samaiden bags three bioenergy projects via Seda 2025 e-bidding
KUALA LUMPUR: Samaiden Group Bhd has secured three bioenergy project awards under the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda) Malaysia's 2025 e-bidding mechanism. These projects, located in Johor, Terengganu, and Kelantan, will add over 18 megawatts of biomass and biogas capacity to Samaiden's portfolio, further strengthening its position in Malaysia's renewable energy (RE) sector. The approved projects include two biomass power plants located in Tangkak, Johor and Kemaman, Terengganu respectively, and a biogas power plant in Bachok, Kelantan. Each project was awarded a 21-year Feed-in Tariff (FiT) approval and are expected to begin commissioning from second half of 2028. Samaiden group managing director Datuk Ir Chow Pui Hee said these awards mark a significant step forward in expanding the group's RE portfolio beyond solar into biomass and biogas. "The diversification strengthens our long-term earnings visibility, supports Malaysia's decarbonisation agenda, and positions Samaiden as a comprehensive clean energy solutions provider," she said in a statement today. Chow said the group is proud that its bids were successful in three different states, showcasing the depth of our technical capabilities and execution track record." The biomass and biogas projects will expand Samaiden's involvement in Malaysia's RE sector, supporting the government's target of 70 per cent RE generation capacity by 2050.
