Penang on strong path to progress, firmly rooted in heritage
In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Tun Ramli said Penang's strategic blend of modern infrastructure, rich historical heritage and cultural diversity continues to attract global investors and tourists, placing the state prominently on the Southeast Asian investment map.
'Penang has a heritage that cannot be replicated, a legacy shaped by locals and colonial influences. It's not just physical, but also traditional, which includes customs, food, and way of life, all in one rich mix,' he said.
The interview was conducted recently at Seri Mutiara by Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and Penang bureau chief R. Ratcharathan.
Tun Ramli noted that Penang's historical role as a trading port has been bolstered by modern infrastructure such as the Penang International Airport and an efficient road network, which continue to attract steady inflows of foreign investment.
In the first quarter of 2025, Penang recorded RM6.7 billion in approved investments, 90 per cent of which were foreign direct investments (FDI), accounting for 22 per cent of Malaysia's total.
He said the state's economy is expected to remain robust, driven by high-tech industries such as electronics, semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI), supported by ongoing infrastructure upgrades by the state government.
Among the key federal-led mega projects seen as future catalysts are the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project and the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Expressway, which are expected to improve connectivity significantly, ease tourist access and strengthen investment support.
On tourism, Tun Ramli highlighted that Penang's competitive edge lies not only in its scenic charm but in its heritage-based tourism, ranging from colonial architecture to deep-rooted customs and diverse culinary traditions reflecting the state's multiracial identity.
'Heritage here isn't just about buildings, it's a way of life. Like the Taj Mahal in India, which has drawn crowds for centuries, Penang's heritage continues to captivate people from all over. The interest keeps growing,' he said.
The Penang International Airport recorded nearly 2 million passenger movements in the first quarter of 2025, a 69.55 per cent increase from the same period last year. International passenger numbers rose by over 80 per cent, while domestic passengers increased by more than 57 per cent.
Tun Ramli also praised the state's racial harmony and the strong command of the Malay language among non-Malay communities, calling it a solid foundation for Penang's progress.

SINGAPORE (Bernama): Mi kolok, layer cakes, chocolates, white pepper, and black pepper were among the signature products from the Land of the Hornbills available at the Sarawak Pavilion at the Malaysia Fest 2025 expo currently taking place in Singapore until Sunday (Aug 3). Sarawak Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) Director Norsalawaty Abdul Kadir said these products have their own uniqueness, making them suitable not only for selling directly to visitors but also have export potential. "For example, the Borco branded chocolate from D Mummy's Recipe sold here are made of Bornean cocoa and comes in dabai (Borneo olive), empelajo, and sour brinjal flavours. These are fruit and vegetables grown in Sarawak. "Other markets might have chocolates that contain hazelnut or almond, but Sarawak has empelajo which has a richer taste than almond,' she told Bernama. Norsalawaty said five entrepreneurs from the state have been selected to participate in the Sarawak Pavilion at the expo. She said this first-ever participation by the Sarawak state government through the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, and Investment Sarawak (MINTRED) has been well-received, and hoped that more aspiring entrepreneurs would take part in the expo next year. "We have also matched Sarawakian entrepreneurs and business people with exporters in Singapore. "All the entrepreneurs that we brought here are export ready, including in terms of production capacity, in addition to having the required certification such as halal certification,' she said. Norsalawaty said for the first time at this Malaysia Fest, FAMA had brought in 400 kilograms of citron from Sarawak to allow visitors to sample and enjoy the agricultural produce as part of the "Island of Tropical Fruits' segment. "For the time being, citron is not yet widely grown in Sarawak. If there is demand here, we hope it can motivate our farmers,' she said. FAMA had brought in about 10 tonnes of tropical and seasonal fruit to the expo this time. Jutaan Purnama Sdn Bhd Managing Director, Saiful Hammidi Hamid, said the company's products such as Purnama Taste branded mi kolok, mi kampua and mi pok are looking for opportunities to be exported to Singapore and the wider market. He believed Sarawakian products have their own market as well as able to penetrate the wider international market. "Our products are now marketed not just in Malaysia but also in Paris this year following our participation at the expo there. They have been very well received. We started small through cargo export and recently we started using containers,' he said. Malaysia Fest 2025 themed "Unlock The Treasures of Malaysia' is taking place from July 31 to August 3 at Hall 5A and 5B, Singapore Expo from 10 am to 10 pm. SAMB implements new water tariff rates effective Aug 1
SYARIKAT Air Melaka Berhad (SAMB) has introduced new water tariff rates, effective Aug 1, aimed at keeping the state's water supply system sustainable, stable, and ready to meet future challenges. In a statement, SAMB said the adjustment was made without burdening the majority of domestic users, particularly the 312,396 registered households that use water prudently. 'This adjustment also involves 48,788 non-domestic accounts involving business premises, industries, government agencies, charitable institutions, places of worship, shipping and data centres, which will contribute more equitably to the cost of providing water services,' it said. The revised water supply tariff rates for Melaka are as follows: 1. Domestic (Residential): Minimum charge: RM9.40 0-20 cubic metre(m³): RM0.94/m³ 21-35 m³: RM1.69/m³ More than 35 m³: RM2.26/m³ 2. Domestic (Residential Bulk Meter): Minimum charge: RM25 Consumption: RM2.22/m³ 3. Business/Industry/Government: Minimum charge: RM26.60 0-35 m³: RM2.66/m³ More than 35 m³: RM2.72/m³ 4. Johor water tariff hike exempts most domestic users, says Ranhill SAJ
JOHOR BAHRU: The recent water tariff adjustment in Johor will not affect the majority of domestic consumers, places of worship, or vulnerable groups under the e-Kasih database, said state water operator Ranhill SAJ. Its chief executive officer, Anuar Abdul Ghani, said those in usage tiers one and two will continue enjoying the existing rates, with the adjustment applying only to high-usage domestic consumers in tier three and non-domestic users. 'For domestic users consuming more than 35 cubic metres per month, the rate has been adjusted by 35 sen per cubic metre, but the minimum monthly charge remains at RM10.50,' he said in a statement today. Non-domestic users will see a tariff increase ranging from RM1 to RM1.75 per cubic metre, with the new minimum charge set at RM41.50 monthly. Anuar said residents in strata housing using bulk metres will experience an increase of 20 sen per cubic metre, while the shipping industry will now be charged RM8.03 per cubic metre. A new tariff category has also been introduced for data centres, which will be charged RM5.33 per cubic metre. He said the adjustments, gazetted and effective from Aug 1, were approved by the Cabinet as a necessary step to improve water services and infrastructure resilience. The changes would help fund the replacement of aging, leak-prone pipelines and support rising water demand due to rapid development and population growth, he added. Among the key upgrade projects supported by the new tariff are Layang 2 Phase 2 (160 million litres per day), Semanggar (50 MLD), and Semanggar 3 (120 MLD). 'This is an investment for the future of Johor's water supply. It ensures sustainable, modern infrastructure that meets long-term needs,' Anuar added. - Bernama
