Shropshire support group advises Hollyoaks on abuse storyline

BBC News13-06-2025
A group that supports parents who suffer abuse at the hands of their children has been working with the makers of Hollyoaks on a recent storyline. The Channel Four soap shows what happens when one of the characters becomes resentful of his father and starts to physically abuse him.Shropshire-based Parental Education Growth Support (PEGS) said it was consulted on the issue and hoped the story would raise awareness of the issue.PEGS founder Michelle John said: "This storyline reflects the need for early intervention, support and understanding."
PEGS said it was set up "as a response to the lack of support services specifically designed to help parents, carers and guardians" experiencing child-to-parent abuse. It offers support to parents, carers and guardians, as well as training for people tackling the issue and also seeks to raise awareness of it.The Hollyoaks story follows the changing relationship between Lucas Hay and his father Ste, which turns into an abusive one.As it develops, viewers see Lucas takes his anger out on Ste behind closed doors and Ste blaming himself.PEGS said women were more likely to experience this form of abuse, but it could come in many forms, including verbal, physical, emotional and financial abuse. The soap's production team said the support group advised it on the writing of the story, with regular chats to ensure the issue was portrayed authentically.Ms John said she was "proud" to support the programme and getting the issue "more widely recognised and spoken about". She said it was a complex issue and families experiencing child-to-parent abuse were not looking for blame to be placed on their children.Actor Kieron Richardson, who plays Ste in the series, said the storyline "flips the script on what many people assume abuse looks like"."It's uncomfortable, it's emotional, and it's real," he added.

BREAKING: Michelle Williams, 44, welcomes fourth child as she reveals surrogacy details

Actress Michelle Williams has revealed she has welcomed a baby daughter via a surrogate. Michelle, 44, who is married to Hamilton director Thomas Kail, discussed having three children under the age of five during an appearance on chat show Jimmy Kimmel Live. She is also mother to daughter Matilda, 19, who was born during her relationship with the late actor Heath Ledger. Responding to a compliment on her figure from actress Tiffany Haddish, who is filling in for Kimmel, the Dawson's Creek star said: "Then I've got to give a big shout out to Christine, because this last baby did not come through my body. But the miracle of our little girl is thanks to Christine. Maybe you're watching out there, so thank you Christine. Thanks to Christine, I have three under five at home." It comes as Hollyoaks star, Roxanne McKee, announced she was expecting her first child, aged 45. Discussing how she is managing with three little ones, Michelle said: "Everything's good and under control. I'm the adult. "I'm trying to figure out the sort of life-work balance. "I hear a lot of people are talking about self-care, and I'm just wondering, when? Because I'm a working mom. "I already have the guilt, and I don't want to take more time away from them, but I understand I need to fill up the tank." She joked she had found a solution by "visiting our fine local establishments of government bureaucracy". Williams added: "You say: 'I'm sorry, honey. But one day you're going to grow up, and you're going to get a job. And you're going to pay taxes, and you're going to need a social security number for that.' "And then here's how it goes: I recommend a midday appointment because it's a little bit more crowded. And then you can claim your rightful place at the back of the line where they will let you wait in complete silence for at least one hour. "There is free seating for all. Bring like a nail file and a to-do list and check, check, check." She continued: "If you want a pro hack tip, don't double-check your paperwork because you might have to go back." The actress, who discloses very little information about her private life, is best known for films including The Greatest Showman, Brokeback Mountain, Venom and Blue Valentine. Michell welcomed her first child with Kail in 2020 and a second in 2022.
