
China's JD.com tops quarterly revenue estimates as consumer demand holds up
Consumer demand in China has faced a series of hurdles in recent years, with a prolonged property sector crisis and high unemployment rates never allowing for a full recovery from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
But e-commerce players such as JD.com and Alibaba, which reports quarterly results on Thursday, have resorted to slapping heavy discounts and cutting product prices to lure shoppers, while also leaning on government subsidies to drive consumption.
That has helped JD.com, a major retailer of home appliances in China, even as consumer sentiment took a hit from U.S.-China trade tensions. China's retail sales growth also quickened in January and February.
JD.com reported total revenue of 301.08 billion yuan ($41.82 billion) for the quarter ended March 31, up 15.8% from a year earlier. Analysts' estimate was 289.22 billion yuan, according to data compiled by LSEG.
U.S.-listed shares of the company jumped nearly 3% in early trading.
The upcoming shopping festival, dubbed as 618 as it falls on June 18, will be a barometer to gauge to what extent consumer demand in the country has recovered.
The online shopping event, initiated by JD.com, is becoming longer and longer. This year, Taobao already started the 618 pre-sale on Tuesday, while JD.com, whose official start date of 618 is May 31, announced an event called the "Heartbeat Shopping Festival" which began on Tuesday.
Jacob Cooke, CEO of e-commerce consultancy WPIC Marketing + Technologies, said he expects sales growth during this year's 618. "China's consumer confidence has shown greenshoots in 2025, with healthy retail growth the last few months and strong travel numbers on May Day and the Qingming Festival," he said.
On Tuesday, the State Administration for Market Regulation, China's top market regulator, said it has summoned e-commerce platforms such as JD.com, Meituan, and Alibaba's Ele.me and requested they abide by laws and regulations and compete fairly and in an orderly manner.

Gilded packs by Konstantin Grcic are linked closely to the established codes of Louis Vuitton and in particular give a starring role to the LV flower. With the ongoing luxury fashion slowdown and the global luxury beauty market expected to continue a strong growth trajectory, it's an increasingly important category for even the most successful fashion labels. And the more luxurious the better as the pricing proves. But while the prices are high, the launch is likely to appeal to aspirational luxury shoppers who may not buy the clothes but may well have a Louis Vuitton bag and will be keen to have a lipstick to go in it.

Swatch shares drop as Swiss watchmaker apologises for racist ad
Swiss watchmaker Swatch apologised Monday for an ad campaign that upset consumers in China and elsewhere and said it had 'immediately removed all related materials worldwide.' In an image for the Swatch Essentials collection, an Asian male model is shown pulling the edges of his eyelids upward and backward with his fingers—a gesture seen as derogatory and racist, Swiss public broadcaster SRF reported. Swatch wrote on Instagram that 'we sincerely apologise for any distress or misunderstanding this may have caused.' It said it would 'treat this matter with the utmost importance.' SRF reported that the apology was also posted on the Chinese social network Weibo in Chinese and English. Swatch shares in decline The intraday trading range for Swatch on Monday was between 138.20 CHF (€146.74) and 139.55 CHF (€148.17), with the stock declining in 6 of the last 10 days, down by 4.3%. Monday's volume fell by around 22,000 shares, signalling a divergence with rising prices and potentially warning of near-term volatility. Swatch's sales in the first half of the year fell short of estimates, largely due to sluggish demand in its key market—China. This shortfall dragged its performance and reflects ongoing challenges in the region. Sales will certainly not be boosted by the backlash over the racist commercial.
