Jon Hamm steals expensive stuff and likely viewers' hearts in Apple TV+'s ‘Your Friends & Neighbors'

NEW YORK (AP) — 'Your Friends & Neighbors' begins with a once high-flying hedge fund manager waking up in someone else's luxurious house, next to a dead body and in a pool of blood.
How he ended up there consumes the first season of this compelling Apple TV+ series, which stars Jon Hamm and takes a peek at the lives of the ultrarich in a leafy New York suburb.
'I was interested in writing about the status symbols, about the way wealth informs community,' says creator, showrunner and producer Jonathan Tropper. 'And then at the same time, what I really wanted to do is subvert it a little bit and talk about how impermanent it all is.'
Like 'White Lotus' and 'Big Little Lies' before it, 'Your Friends & Neighbors' revolves around the woes of the wealthy and questions why we chase social status.
'Why is more always better?' asks Hamm. 'Is the only metric really the accumulation of these larger and larger piles of stuff, whether it's money or goods or houses or wives or what have you? We're kind of arrived at this time where this story is particularly resonant.'
A cat burglar is born
Hamm plays Princeton-educated hedge fund star Andrew Cooper, who finds himself divorced and unemployable. Drowning in debt, he turns to petty crime: Breaking into neighbors' homes to steal $350,000 watches, Hermès handbags and $32,000 bottles of chardonnay.
He rationalizes the thefts are just a quick fix until he figures out a way to get his money faucet back on. Plus, he'd never be a suspect. 'I figured, 'What's the worst that can happen?'' he thinks.
'It's the old story about what happens when you go bankrupt. It happens very slowly and then all of a sudden,' says Hamm. 'Coop's at the all-of-a-sudden part.'
Tropper says his show is exploring the notion of entitlement and how self-worth can be wrapped up in what people own. He's also showing how close to disaster we all really are.
'We're all handed a script: Do well in school, go to these colleges, get these jobs, and you'll be set. And you can do all that and excel and get it all right and the system may still spit you out. That's really what this show is about. It's about this man who is in a simmering rage that the system he bought into spit him out.'
There's a perverse delight in watching Hamm's Cooper saunter into mansions when he knows the owners are away and make off with luxury goods, becoming a sort of down-on-his-luck burglar sticking it to the rich.
Quiet desperation
Cooper becomes acutely aware that life in this well-to-do suburb is fueled by conspicuous consumerism and country club boasting. 'It's not like I'd never noticed,' he says as the narrator. 'But I guess now I was seeing it differently.'
Among the things he sees are the ways people have monetized the emptiness some men feel when they reach the top of the mountain — career, marriage, kids and prestige — and yet feel unfulfilled.
'Scotch, cigars, smoked meats, custom golf clubs, high-end escorts — entire industries built to cash in on the quiet desperation of rich, middle-aged men,' Cooper notes.
Cooper soon grapples with the underworld to fence his stolen merchandise while also hooking up with a divorcee (Olivia Munn) and scheming to get his old job back. His kids resent him and his unstable sister needs him.
Munn says its great to see Hamm tap into one of his most loved roles — Don Draper in 'Mad Men,' a complex character with a flawed personal life.
'In this case, he's this like finance bro, for whom everything has come so easily. And he's sort of despicable, but you kind of feel sorry for him at the same time, somehow,' she says. 'It's really fun to go on the spiral with him.'
The origin of 'Your Friends & Neighbors'
Tropper came up with the premise after living for many years in New York's Westchester County, in which communities like Scarsdale and Larchmont are among the nation's wealthiest.
Tropper was in a community adjacent to the kind of super wealthy one depicted in the series and watched the financial upswings where 'people started to make stupid amounts of money.'
'I was a novelist. I was just feeling that it can't possibly be sustainable,' he says. 'As a non-finance person living amongst financial people, I had an insider's access, but an outsider's point of view.'
He'd drive down the pristine blocks and wonder what troubles were going on behind the closed doors of the mega-mansions: 'What you realize is a lot of these are built on foundations of rot.'
Getting his man
Tropper pitched the series to Hamm and didn't write the show until the actor was on board. In his head, Cooper was always played by Jon Hamm.
'He's an actor who really walks the line perfectly between comedy and drama. And, as a result, he can behave badly and you will still sympathize with him,' says Tropper.
'Hamm is a classically handsome man who people still find relatable. And maybe that's because everyone's delusional, or maybe it's because he has a certain quality that he exudes that still makes him an Everyman, even though he's an Everyman who looks like Jon Hamm.'
Hamm, who was a fan of Tropper's novels and TV shows that include 'Banshee,' 'Warrior' and the science fiction drama 'See,' calls the writer a gifted storyteller and jumped aboard.
'He pitched this idea to me, which I thought had a lot of potential, not just to be an entertaining vehicle but to think about where are we as a culture and society,' says Hamm.
What's next?
Season two of 'Your Friends & Neighbors' was greenlit even before the first episode premiered. Tropper doesn't know how far the series will go but it can't stand still.
'I don't believe we do five seasons of a man robbing houses,' he says. 'Once we've got the viewer buying into this neighborhood, in this world, Coop's survival tactics will change.
'I think the important thing with his journey is that he will never trust the system again. So we watch him struggle between wanting to keep up this lifestyle but rejecting the traditional ways of achieving it,' he adds.

LONDON (AP) — A museum is like an iceberg. Most of it is out of sight. Most big collections have only a fraction of their items on display, with the rest locked away in storage. But not at the new V&A East Storehouse, where London's Victoria and Albert Museum has opened up its storerooms for visitors to view — and in many cases touch — the items within. The 16,000-square-meter (170,000-square-foot) building, bigger than 30 basketball courts, holds more than 250,000 objects, 350,000 books and 1,000 archives. Wandering its huge, three-story collections hall feels like a trip to IKEA, but with treasures at every turn. The V&A is Britain's national museum of design, performance and applied arts, and the storehouse holds aisle after aisle of open shelves lined with everything from ancient Egyptian shoes to Roman pottery, ancient Indian sculptures, Japanese armor, Modernist furniture, a Piaggio scooter and a brightly painted garbage can from the Glastonbury Festival. 'It's 5,000 years of creativity,' said Kate Parsons, the museum's director of collection care and access. It took more than a year, and 379 truckloads, to move the objects from the museum's former storage facility in west London to the new site. Get up close to objects In the museum's biggest innovation, anyone can book a one-on-one appointment with any object, from a Vivienne Westwood mohair sweater to a tiny Japanese netsuke figurine. Most of the items can even be handled, with exceptions for hazardous materials, such as Victorian wallpaper that contains arsenic. The Order an Object service offers 'a behind-the-scenes, very personal, close interaction' with the collection, Parsons said as she showed off one of the most requested items so far: a 1954 pink silk taffeta Balenciaga evening gown. Nearby in one of the study rooms were a Bob Mackie-designed military tunic worn by Elton John on his 1981 world tour and two silk kimonos laid out ready for a visit. Parsons said there has been 'a phenomenal response' from the public since the building opened at the end of May. Visitors have ranged from people seeking inspiration for their weddings to art students and 'someone last week who was using equipment to measure the thread count of an 1850 dress.' She says strangers who have come to view different objects often strike up conversations. 'It's just wonderful,' Parsons said. 'You never quite know. … We have this entirely new concept and of course we hope and we believe and we do audience research and we think that people are going to come. But until they actually did, and came through the doors, we didn't know.' A new cultural district The V&A's flagship museum in London's affluent South Kensington district, founded in the 1850s, is one of Britain's biggest tourist attractions. The Storehouse is across town in the Olympic Park, a post-industrial swath of east London that hosted the 2012 summer games. As part of post-Olympic regeneration, the area is now home to a new cultural quarter that includes arts and fashion colleges, a dance theater and another V&A branch, due to open next year. The Storehouse has hired dozens of young people recruited from the surrounding area, which includes some of London's most deprived districts. Designed by Diller, Scofidio and Renfro, the firm behind New York's High Line park, the building has space to show off objects too big to have been displayed very often before, including a 17th-century Mughal colonnade from India, a 1930s modernist office designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and a Pablo Picasso-designed stage curtain for a 1924 ballet, some 10 meters (more than 30 feet) high. Also on a monumental scale are large chunks of vanished buildings, including a gilded 15th-century ceiling from the Torrijos Palace in Spain and a slab of the concrete façade of Robin Hood Gardens, a demolished London housing estate. Not a hushed temple of art, this is a working facility. Conversation is encouraged and forklifts beep in the background. Workers are finishing the David Bowie Center , a home for the late London-born musician's archive of costumes, musical instruments, letters, lyrics and photos that is due to open at the Storehouse in September. Museums seek transparency One aim of the Storehouse is to expose the museum's inner workings, through displays delving into all aspects of the conservators' job – from the eternal battle against insects to the numbering system for museum contents — and a viewing gallery to watch staff at work. The increased openness comes as museums in the U.K. are under increasing scrutiny over the origins of their collections. They face pressure to return objects acquired in sometimes contested circumstances during the days of the British Empire Senior curator Georgia Haseldine said the V&A is adopting a policy of transparency, 'so that we can talk very openly about where things have come from, how they ended up in the V&A's collection, and also make sure that researchers, as well as local people and people visiting from all around the world, have free and equitable access to these objects. 'On average, museums have one to five percent of their collections on show,' she said. 'What we're doing here is saying, 'No, this whole collection belongs to all of us. This is a national collection and you should have access to it.' That is our fundamental principle.'

It's a rocking good time, even when life's roads are bumpy, as evidenced across the release — from the jukebox stomp of the title track to the rowdy 'She Hates Me,' which includes a surprising interpolation of post-grunge band Puddle of Mudd's 2001 hit 'She (Expletive) Hates Me.' — Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer has transformed across their career, moving from pop-punk boy band in their teens to full-on arena rock giants. Now that each member of the quartet is endeavoring to release side projects, it's clear that they all have distinct, unique taste, too. Next up is bassist Calum Hood, with his debut solo album, 'Order Chaos Order,' out Friday. She recounts experiencing sexual harassment by a soccer coach at Boston University, and the early days of her podcast when it was a part of Barstool Sports. She also goes into how she transitioned from a shock-jock persona focused only on sex and dating to an advocate for female empowerment who interviewed Vice President Kamala Harris on the presidential campaign trail. The series also interviews Cooper's family and friends. — Another new Hulu offering out Tuesday is 'The Kollective,' a drama series inspired by the investigative journalism group Bellingcat. With a cast that includes Natascha McElhone and Gregg Sulkin, 'The Kollective' follows a group of citizen journalists investigating a global network of political corruption. — Tyler Perry expands his popular 'Sistas' universe with 'Divorced Sistas' for BET. LeToya Luckett leads a cast about five female friends navigating marriage, divorce and dating. It premieres Monday on BET and streams on BET+ beginning Tuesday. — Bravo's 'The Real Housewives of Miami' returns for its seventh season on Wednesday. All is not lost, however, for space miner Jan Dolski, who can clone himself to create The Alters he needs to get off this blasted rock before the radiation kills him. So we get Jan Scientist, Jan Technician, Jan Botanist and so on. The bad news is that each alter has his own set of personality traits, so a depressive Jan may need to figure out how to cope with an abrasive Jan. Poland's 11 Bit Studios built its reputation on the grueling survival games Frostpunk and This War of Mine, and The Alters adds a dose of 'Mickey 17'-style black comedy. 'Maybe' schmaybe. Sunday night was a signed, sealed, delivered happy ending for 'Maybe Happy Ending,' the stratospherically original South Korean gem about robots in love starring Darren Criss that deservedly won the Tony Award for Best Musical. What a stunning achievement for the little show that almost didn't open. Advertisement Gleeky Criss also earned his first Tony for Best Actor in a Musical — one of the production's five total. 5 'Maybe Happy Ending' won the Tony Award for Best Musical on Sunday. Charles Sykes/Invision/AP I know, I know — their performance on the telecast was meh. Microscopic in that 50th Street barn. But go see 'Maybe Happy Ending' at the intimate Belasco Theatre. It's sublime in person. Advertisement Ditto — but different — for 'Purpose,' playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' scintillating drama at the Hayes about a bickering black political dynasty that took home Best Play. Hysterical and vicious, it's the season's meaty tomahawk steak. The Tonys, back home at Radio City Musical Hall for the first time since 2022, finally felt like they were back to their old selves again. The last few years have been quiet, dinky, dark and apologetic. But last night was euphoric. And several productions that performed came off fabulously on the broadcast, hosted by 'Wicked' star Cynthia Erivo, which is watched by about 3.5 million people. That's barely a drop in the viewership bucket compared to the Oscars. The Super Bowl? Fuggedaboutit. But the teeny Tonys exist to sell targeted products that are housed in just 41 theaters across a few blocks in Manhattan. That 3.5 million matters. Advertisement What won our wallets? 'Death Becomes Her''s performance of 'For the Gaze' with Megan Hilty was shimmering and hilarious. It'll sell tickets. 'Buena Vista Social Club' showcased its electrifying Tony-winning dance and transportive Cuban music. The show's box office — or website, anyway — will get a lot of traffic. 5 Nicole Scherzinger took home her first Tony Award for playing Norma Desmond in the revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Sunset Boulevard.' Charles Sykes/Invision/AP The ingenious Tony Award winner for Best Revival of a Musical 'Sunset Boulevard' has only a month left. Sprint, don't run. And star Nicole Scherzinger, who triumphantly won the Tony for Best Actress, shattered every window in Midtown with her glorious rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'As If We Never Said Goodbye.' Advertisement A beaming Lloyd Webber won his first Tony in 30 years. What will not move a single seat was 'Gypsy' star Audra McDonald's nails-on-a-chalkboard version of 'Rose's Turn.' Awful. 5 The musical 'Death Becomes Her' came off great on the telecast. Getty Images for Tony Awards Productions And the smaller musicals, 'Dead Outlaw' and 'Operation Mincemeat,' were a little weird in the TV context. Both are niche-as-it-gets musicals about corpses. Welcome to the Radio City Music Morgue! Especially random was 'Real Women Have Curves,' which wasn't even nominated for Best Musical. It should never have been given a slot. It's gonna flop big time, and you could feel as much through the screen. Not that 'Hamilton' — ever heard of it? — needs the boost, but a reunion medley featuring stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr. and Phillipa Soo was both energizing and nostalgic. 'This makes me feel old,' a friend texted. Too right. 5 Cole Escola won Best Actor in a Play for 'Oh, Mary!' Getty Images for Tony Awards Productions And it was a deeply moving idea for Sara Bareilles and Erivo to duet on the 'Annie' classic tomorrow by the late composer Charles Strouse, who died this year, during the teary In Memoriam. Advertisement My favorite moment of any winner's speech was when Cole Escola, the brilliant writer-director of 'Oh, Mary!' recalled meeting fellow nominees, including George Clooney, while accepting Best Actor in a Play. 'It's been an honor getting to know you over warm salads at all these luncheons,' the always funny Escola quipped. 'Oh, Mary!' is another must see. 5 'Succession' star Sarah Snook won Best Actress in a Play for 'The Picture of Dorian Gray.' Stephen Lovekin/Shutterstock Sarah Snook, Shiv from 'Succession,' snagged Best Actress in a Play for her mind-bending portrayal of 26 separate roles in 'The Picture of Dorian Gray.' At risk of repeating myself, check it out. Advertisement Erivo didn't quite defy gravity as host. Elphaba stayed respectably on the ground, played to her strengths (singing, being British) and thankfully didn't go overboard with bits. In the end, though, the 2025 Tony Awards did a superb job of celebrating the best work of a veyy creative Broadway season. Plenty of the winners are still on. Say it with me: Go see 'em.
