Knicks new coach Mike Brown set to embrace high expectations
And Brown is ready to embrace them.
'Nobody has any bigger expectations than I do,' Brown said during his introductory news conference on Tuesday. 'My expectations are high. This is the Knicks and Madison Square Garden. It's iconic. ... I love and embrace the expectations that come along with it.'
Officially hired as the Knicks' head coach on Monday, Brown, 55, emphasized that the likes of stars Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, key frontcourt contributors like Mitchell Robinson and newcomers Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele combined to give the Knicks plenty of options on offense.
At the end of the day, however, 'it's about relationships,' Brown said, including players and coaches holding each other accountable.
'It's about trust,' Brown said. 'Once you grow those relationships, then you can talk openly about anything that you need to go in the direction you need to go. I'm going to be open and honest with them, and I'm sure they're going to be open and honest with me.'
A two-time Coach of the Year, Brown takes over the Knicks after previous stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers (twice), Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings. Over parts of 11 seasons as a head coach, he has amassed a 50-40 playoff record and now looks to guide the Knicks to the franchise's first NBA championship since 1973.
'There's a lot of work to do,' Brown said. 'But I'm looking forward to getting started.'

He offered an honest outlook for the team. "As of right now, New York has around $46 million in second-apron space. However, that doesn't account for the new deals we expect Mikal Bridges and Mitchell Robinson to sign between now and next summer," Quinn wrote. "If both are long-term Knicks, New York will blow past the second apron and only have a minimum to offer. If James is open to the minimum, and that's already a stretch, wouldn't he be likelier to take it in Cleveland than New York? In this scenario, the Knicks would be fighting an uphill battle." Assuming James does become a free agent next offseason, quite a few teams would have interest in him. It's possible the 2025-26 season could be his last, but playing another year still seems to be the most likely scenario. More than three years after the fact, the A.J. Brown trade keeps getting worse for the Titans. The Titans announced Monday that wide receiver Treylon Burks, whom the team selected No. 18 overall after acquiring the pick as part of the Brown trade, has been waived. Burks was waived with injury designation after hurting his collarbone during practice on Saturday, and if he clears waivers, he'll wind up back on Tennessee's injured reserve. After making a pair of big trades that helped get them to the Eastern Conference finals last offseason, the New York Knicks made more roster upgrades this summer. Armed with an abundance of depth and star power, they remain one of the league's top contenders. The timing of going all in has paid off for the Knicks, as they are in a good position to make a run at the NBA title in 2026. Teams like the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers will be without some of their top players due to injury, and other threats like the Milwaukee Bucks haven't improved much or at all. This opens the door for a team like New York to put together an even deeper run in the postseason. As the offseason rolls along, the people at updated their power rankings for the teams in the East. New York almost secured the top spot, slotting in at No. 2 behind the Cleveland Cavaliers. Looking at each team's offseason, a case could be made for the Knicks being put ahead of the Cavs. While they did undergo a coaching change, they are bringing back all of their core pieces and were able to add depth in the form of Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele. Meanwhile, Cleveland has a big void to fill with guard Ty Jerome leaving in free agency. Come next season, the Knicks very well could find themselves atop these power rankings for an extended period. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns proved to be a strong duo and might only improve under a more offensive-minded coach in Mike Brown. Looking at the conference as a whole, it's hard not to view them as one of the favorites to represent the East in next year's NBA Finals.
