Phillies Fans Name Reliever as Top Target at MLB Trade Deadline

Phillies Fans Name Reliever as Top Target at MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies are going to be buyers at the MLB trade deadline. Whether they spend top-dollar on the best players or target middle-of-the-pack players is still unknown. But, whatever direction the Phillies take, they'll be targeting two main spots: relief pitching and outfield. Advertisement In a poll done by SB Nation's The Good Phight, Phillies fans voted on what position the team should target at the MLB trade deadline. The article from Evan White of The Good Phight revealed the percentage total from Phillies fans, 60 percent of whom called the bullpen the position to prioritize at the deadline. White wrote that, "The majority of you believe that adding a reliever is the thing the Phillies need to do with the utmost importance in July, something I'd happen to agree with." Outfield help was split between center and left field additions, with 21 percent calling center field and 18 percent calling left field the position to prioritize at the deadline. The Phillies' bullpen is the most important thing to fix come the MLB trade deadline. Whether it's by calling up prospects, trading for relievers, or picking up scraps off the waiver pool, the Phillies need to make adjustments in the bullpen. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson hands the ball to pitcher Orion Kerkering during the eighth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citizens Bank Streicher-Imagn Images On the season, the Phillies' cumulative bullpen ERA sits at 4.52, eighth worst in baseball, and the lowest among all teams currently in postseason spots. That high ERA is in part due to the issues Jordan Romano, Carlos Hernandez, and Jose Ruiz have had for the Phillies in 2025. Advertisement Hernandez and Ruiz are no longer Phillies, while Romano has had his ups and downs in 2025. But the Phillies spent $8.5 million on Romano, so his spot in the bullpen is likely secure barring a complete collapse. Regardless, while Orion Kerkering, Matt Strahm, and Tanner Banks have shown decent stuff for the Phillies, there is a dire need at the position, especially for a closer. Jose Alvarado was suspended for 80 games for PED use, and Romano hasn't been great. The two main closers for the Phillies haven't played well or are out for a significant portion of the season. That makes the need in the bullpen clear.l Philadelphia needs to add a reliever or two, and according to the poll done by The Good Phight, Phillies fans agree. The Phillies need help in the bullpen. Not only do the Phillies know that, but the fans are well aware of that need. Andrew Painter Predicted to Move to Phillies' Bullpen Once Called Up

Andrew Painter Predicted to Move to Phillies' Bullpen Once Called Up originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have a good problem to have: they have at least seven quality starting pitchers on the roster. But, with the team having so many strong starters, the Phillies could be forced to make a strange decision when it comes to some of their starting pitchers. Advertisement In a prediction from Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report, the Phillies are predicted to call up top prospect Andrew Painter and begin his MLB career coming out of the bullpen. "He could be utilized in a multi-inning relief role when he first breaks into the big leagues as a means of continuing to limit his innings," Reuter writes. "With guys like Chris Sale, Corbin Burnes, and Walker Buehler starting their big league careers in similar fashion." Reuter's prediction of the Phillies calling up Painter and using him out of the bullpen makes sense in theory. With a depleted bullpen after lackluster starts ot the year from Jordan Romano and the rest of the bullpen, adding someone of Painter's talents to the bullpen would be a huge boost. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) looks on from the dugout against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC LeClaire-Imagn Images However, Painter doesn't work out of the bullpen, and it's a different beast to do so. The Phillies already are experimenting with Taijuan Walker, a starter, coming out of the bullpen. While he's had his ups and downs, the Phillies making that choice with Painter is a strange one. Advertisement But, with Zack Wheeler, Christopher Sanchez, Ranger Suarez, Jesus Luzardo, and Aaron Nola as the expected starting five, there isn't a lot of room for more pitching. As Mick Abel has showcased through his first few starts, he deserves a spot in the rotation as well. The Phillies have too many starting pitchers, so some will have to shift to the bullpen. Reuter predicts that the Phillies will decide to send Painter to the bullpen, instead of moving to a six-man rotation or moving another one of the Phillies' starters to the bullpen. No matter what the Phillies decide, there will be controversy and comments about the decision. While a tricky situation to manage, it's a good one to have. Rostering seven quality starters in today's game is an impressive feat, and should allow the Phillies to be top contenders come the postseason, even if Nola or another starter, other than Wheeler, were to go down with an injury. Phillies' Rob Thomson May Move Schwarber to Outfield, Castellanos to DH

Phillies' Rob Thomson May Move Schwarber to Outfield, Castellanos to DH originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have one of the best designated hitters in baseball with Kyle Schwarber. He came to Philadelphia as a prospective DH and outfielder, but after his poor defense came to light, the Phillies shifted gears and kept him at designated hitter. Advertisement But ahead of the second game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Phillies manager Rob Thomson made a strange announcement. According to Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic on Twitter/X, Thomson announced that the Phillies may be putting Schwarber back in the outfield to help give Nick Castellanos a break. Thomson's strange pitch came after the Phillies took Castellanos out of the game late against the Blue Jays, sparking minor concern over his availability. Though fortunately, there isn't any long term issues. But, it has seemingly led Thomson to decide to try Schwarber back in the outfield, and putting Castellanos at designated hitter, to allow Castellanos to get more rest while still being in the lineup every day. Advertisement Having both batters in the lineup is a good thing for the Phillies, but the consequence of getting Castellanos time off from outfield duties is putting Schwarber in the outfield. Considering his statistics in the outfield, it's a slightly concerning proposition. According to Baseball Savant, back in 2023, the last time Schwarber qualified as a fielder, he was ranked in the first percentile of all defensive outfielders in Fielding Run Value. Schwarber had a negative 20 Fielding Run Value, ahead of only Keibert Ruiz for the worst fielder in baseball in 2023. Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber (12) looks on from the on-deck circle against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the first inning at PNC LeClaire-Imagn Images His 2022 outfield production wasn't any better, as he had an overall negative 19 Fielding Run Value, second worst in baseball. While Castellanos hasn't been a great fielder, he's been better than Scwharber whenever Schwarber is out there. Advertisement This potential move from Thomson is a strange choice, but it's purpose is clear: keep Castellanos and Schwarber in the lineup, while giving Castellanos time off from playing the field. Ironically, in 2025, Castellanos has been the worst defender according to Fielding Run Value. Sitting at negative nine through 69 games, Castellanos has been the worst fielder in baseball. With that perspective in mind, Thomson's decision makes some sense. But, while Castellanos hasn't been good in the outfield, Schwarber won't be any better. Either would be a hole in the outfield, but at least with Castellanos, he's had significantly more experience there.
