TNSTC workers' body upset with 15th wage revision talks
In the meeting chaired by federation president R Ashokan in the presence of general secretary R Radhakrishnan, members criticised the conduct of the final round of negotiations for the 15th wage revision agreement, which was held in Chennai in the presence of Minister for Transport S S Sivasankar.
The committee alleged that the minister had unusually convened a separate meeting with representatives of the DMK-affiliated association and CITU ahead of the negotiations, and called it an unfair practice.
While the agreement is said to have been implemented with effect from September 1, 2023, the payment of arrears has been scheduled only from September 1, 2024. As a result, workers have lost a year's worth of arrears.

Could Have Bought Rolls-Royce If I Had Removed More Kidneys: DMK MLA's Remark Triggers Backlash
Last Updated: DMK MLA Kathiravan's comments on kidney surgeries at his Trichy hospital sparked outrage. BJP's Annamalai and AIADMK's Palanisamy condemned it, alleging a kidney-stealing racket. A statement by DMK MLA Kathiravan has sparked an outrage, with political leaders in Tamil Nadu suggesting a kidney-stealing racket is functional at his Trichy hospital. BJP leader Annamalai and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palanisamy strongly condemned remarks of DMK MLA from Manachanallur regarding kidney operation of people at his family-run hospital. Criticising the Manachanallur MLA, Annamalai shared a video on X showing Kathiravan discussing the profits made by kidney operations in his hospital and comparing it with the price of a Rolls-Royce car. In the video, Kathiravan said, 'After covering the medical expenses and doctor fees, I will have only 2 to 3 lakhs left (after each kidney operation). Do you know the price of my father's Rolls-Royce car? It is Rs 14.5 crore. The total kidney operations carried out by us is only 252, with the profit of Rs 2 lakh per kidney operation, when can I buy a Rolls-Royce car? I could have bought it only if I had removed all the kidneys from people in Thirupattur. My only concern is that no one realised I saved the lives of 252 people. The BJP leader accused the MLA's hospital of stealing kidney of poor weavers from Namakkal. He said that the DMK-led state government did not take any concrete action against the middleman. 'This is not a joke. Poor weavers from Namakkal were lured, their kidneys stolen, and the MLA himself admits in this video that his hospital made at least Rs 7.5 crore from this trade. Yet, the DMK Govt has taken no concrete action. Has their functionary Dravida Anandan, the middleman in this kidney theft racket, even been arrested?(sic)," he added. While former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy suggested people to avoid visiting clinics run by DMK members, saying they 'may lose your kidney". 'Don't even visit clinics run by DMK men even by mistake. You may lose your kidney. A group is prevailing which shows money to poor and is stealing organs. DMK government itself constituted a committee which investigated and discovered kidney stealing in a hospital belonging to DMK MLA. Was there action taken? NO," he said. He added that only the license for organ transplant in the hospital was cancelled, with no arrests made. 'The MLA says that for buying a Rolls Royce car, he might have to remove people's kidneys. His car is worth Rs 12 crore. He has admitted how many kidneys he needs to steal to buy the car, which is evident from the speech," Edappadi claimed. view comments First Published: August 14, 2025, 13:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. "Fascist DMK": Superstar Vijay Vocal Over Sanitation Workers' Protest
Chennai: Tamil superstar Vijay has ripped into the DMK government, accusing the MK Stalin administration of arresting sanitation workers at midnight when they were protesting peacefully for their rights. "Condemnation to the fascist DMK government for arresting sanitation workers, who have been peacefully fighting for their rights, in an inhumane and anarchic manner in the dead of night," said Vijay, who heads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party. Nearly 900 agitators were detained early this morning outside Ripon Building, headquarters of Greater Chennai Corporation, following a Madras High Court order to clear the protest site. Vijay alleged that some women workers fainted during the police action, while some sustained injuries while being dragged away. "Witnessing this midnight arrest operation, it is evident that violence has been unleashed on women to an extent that no one with a conscience can bear," he said, calling for immediate medical assistance and treatment for the injured. He also alleged that they have been detained at various locations and are unable to contact their families. "To detain them in a way that prevents even communication with their families-are sanitation workers anti-national elements? Does the ruling government have even a shred of conscience? Looking at this cruel action, it becomes crystal clear that what is happening in Tamil Nadu is not democracy but tyranny," said the actor. Calling for immediate release of the workers, he also demanded to know why the DMK government has not fulfilled promises made to them before the election. The sanitation workers had been protesting for the last 13 days outside Ripon Building. Stating that protesting on public footpaths is not permissible, a bench of Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice Sunder Mohan yesterday directed the state administration to clear the protest site. The judgment said the police must act with restraint and allow the protesters to continue their agitation at designated venues after due permission. The protesting sanitation workers opposed the civic body's plan to outsource conservancy operations in Zones V and VI, while also demanding permanent jobs, salary security, and the withdrawal of the privatisation move. But the government and the civic body defended the outsourcing plan, saying it would improve operational efficiency, ensure better waste management, and address manpower shortages - a model they claim has worked in other zones. However, worker representatives insist that privatisation would undermine job security and benefits and vowed to continue their agitation. Left parties have also criticised the court order, particularly when the court is yet to dispose their pleas on the jobs issue.
