Rockies activate SS Ezequiel Tovar in flurry of moves
May 17 - The Colorado Rockies activated Gold Glove shortstop Ezequiel Tovar from the 10-day injured list prior to Friday night's road game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Tovar, 23, has been sidelined with a left hip contusion and last played for Colorado on April 15.
In 16 games this season, Tovar is batting .212 with four doubles, a triple and four RBIs. In four seasons with Colorado, he is a career .258 hitter with 42 home runs and 157 RBIs in 335 games, and was named the National League's Gold Glove Award winner at shortstop last season.
The Rockies also activated second baseman Tyler Freeman (oblique) and shortstop Aaron Schunk (groin) from the IL. Freeman is 1-for-11 (.091) in seven games this season while Schunk is 5-for-20 (.250) in seven games.
Colorado also promoted left-hander Carson Palmquist from Triple-A Albuquerque to start Friday's game. Palmquist, 24, will be making his major league debut after going 2-2 with a 3.82 ERA in seven Triple-A starts this season.
The Rockies also optioned outfielder Sean Bouchard (.169) and right-hander Anthony Molina (one scoreless appearance) to Albuquerque and designated shortstop Alan Trejo (.175) and second baseman Owen Miller (.143) for assignment.

June 9 - Chicago Sky veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot suffered a torn ACL in her right knee and will miss the rest of the 2025 season, the team announced Sunday. Vandersloot was injured Saturday when the Sky lost 79-52 at home to the Indiana Fever. She went down while driving to the basket in the first quarter and had to be carried off the floor. Vandersloot, 36, returned to the Sky this season after becoming a franchise great from 2011-22 and then spending two years with the New York Liberty. Ex-Louisville star Russ Smith arrested on suspicion of DUI and reckless driving
A former college and high school basketball star at two national powerhouses is now facing a DUI charge in Louisville. Russ Smith, a 34-year-old guard playing in Italy's second division, was picked up in the early hours of Sunday morning. He has since been booked on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and one count for an expired registration tag, according to online records. As reported by the Louisville Courier Journal, police claim to have observed Smith making an illegal U-turn across several lanes in the city's Original Highlands neighborhood – a historic area with century-old Victorian homes and shotgun houses. An officer reported a 'strong odor of alcoholic beverages' emanating from Smith, who admitted to consuming 'two bourbon pours neat' before getting behind the wheel. The former Louisville Cardinals star and NCAA champion then failed a field sobriety test before his blood-alcohol level of 0.073 was recorded, according to the arrest citation. That is technically below Kentucky 's 0.08 blood-alcohol limit, but state law permits charges for drivers with any level above 0.04 if there is 'other competent evidence' to consider, according to the Courier Journal. Smith has since been released on bond and will be due for an arraignment hearing on Wednesday at 9am. The New York native is best known to hoops fanatics as the scrappy 6-foot Louisville guard who, along with Peyton Siva, led coach Rick Pitino's Cardinals to a national championship in 2013 – a title the school has since vacated. In 2015, it was revealed that Louisville recruits were provided strippers and escorts between 2010 and 2014. One woman later claimed she was paid $100 to have sex with Smith, then a top recruit from Queens, New York's Archbishop Molloy. Smith would later deny that claim to the Courier Journal in 2016. He was never charged for any wrongdoing in the NCAA case against Louisville, which vacated the 2013 title and other achievements as part of its punishment. He would go on to be taken by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft but never really found a home in the league.

Top USC scorer Desmond Claude transfers to Washington
June 9 - Senior guard Desmond Claude, who led Southern California in scoring last season, said Sunday that he will be joining the Washington program. The 6-foot-6 Claude averaged 15.8 points, 4.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 33 games (32 starts) last season. He reportedly chose the Huskies over Alabama and Gonzaga. Claude announced his decision on Instagram. "After a long and thorough process of evaluating each school recruiting me, I have decided to sign at the University of Washington," Claude wrote. "I am a firm believer with the recruiting class coming in and the returning players, we can compete with the very best, which was very important to me. "I am excited to get to work with my new teammates and staff in Seattle Husky. Go Dawgs!!" The decision by Claude means both of USC's top two players transferred to Washington. Wesley Yates, who was second with a 14.1 scoring average and shot a stellar 43.9 percent from 3-point range as a freshman last season, announced his move to the Huskies in April. Last season was Claude's only one with the Trojans. He played his first two seasons at Xavier and enjoyed a breakout season in 2023-24 when he averaged 16.6 points and was named Big East Most Improved Player.
