River Plate see off Urawa to make winning start at Club World Cup
SEATTLE, WA, June 17 (Reuters) - River Plate opened their Club World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds on Tuesday, with goals from Facundo Colidio, Sebastian Driussi and Maxi Meza enough to see off a spirited challenge from the Japanese side. The Argentine team got off to a dominant start and opened the scoring after 12 minutes when Colidio headed home a fine cross from Marcos Acuna on the left. Driussi doubled the lead three minutes into the second half, capitalising on a poor header back from Marius Hoibraten to head the ball over the advancing goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa and into an empty net. Striker Driussi was forced off soon after, having picked up an injury in the build up, and Urawa pulled one back in the 58th minute through Yusuke Matsuo, who calmly converted a penalty following a foul by Acuna. While Urawa pushed hard for an equaliser, substitute Meza delivered the decisive blow in the 73rd minute, with yet another header from Acuna's corner, his second assist of the match. River will face Mexico's Monterrey on Saturday, while Urawa take on Champions League runners-up Inter Milan in Group E.

Pep Guardiola could blood new signings with Rayan Cherki ‘impatient to play'
Manchester City could have a fresh look as they begin their challenge at the Club World Cup on Wednesday. Pep Guardiola's side enter the maligned tournament in the United States as they take on Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in their Group G opener Philadelphia. Advertisement The game brings manager Pep Guardiola an early opportunity to blood his latest signings after the club continued their squad overhaul by bringing in four new players last week. Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli arrived at a combined cost of £108million and immediately joined up with the squad to travel to the US. Those deals came after Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis were brought in in January amid an underwhelming 2024-25 campaign. Third-choice goalkeeper Bettinelli aside, the new faces are in line to make debuts at Lincoln Financial Field in a game that kicks off at midday local time. Advertisement With Kevin De Bruyne having now departed and Jack Grealish not with the squad and facing an uncertain future at the club, the next phase of City's transition looks set to get under way. Guardiola has continually referred to the Club World Cup as the start of 2025-26, rather than the end of the last trophyless season, and Cherki, for one, is anxious to get going. 'He's the best coach in the world, and I think he's the best coach in history,' said the France midfielder in an interview released by the club after his signing. Rayan Cherki, left, is among City's summer signings (Adam Davy/PA) 'To work for him is an honour for me and I'm impatient to play.' Advertisement City are the defending champions at the Club World Cup having won it in its old guise in December 2023 before its dramatic rebranding as a 32-team, month-long tournament this summer. Cherki said: 'This cup is a new cup and we want to win. It is every four years and I want the team to win because it's the first time in history.' City have based themselves near Miami for the tournament and were due to head to Philadelphia on Tuesday. Guardiola was scheduled to hold a press conference at 11.45pm BST. City have further group games against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi in Atlanta and Juventus in Orlando. Advertisement

Liverpool make approach for Chelsea and Man Utd target to follow Florian Wirtz
Manchester United and Liverpool will rival Chelsea in the race to sign Lyon starlet Malick Fofana. Fofana emerged as one of Lyon's brightest young stars following his arrival from Gent in January 2024, making 41 appearances across all competitions with 11 goals and six assists to his name last season. The 20-year-old also caught the eye during Lyon's Europa League campaign, coming off the bench against Manchester United to help spark a comeback at Old Trafford before Harry Maguire's late heroics. Lyon have already cashed in on one of their prized assets this summer with Rayan Cherki joining Manchester City. L'Equipe report Fofana could now join him with three Premier League giants interested in his services. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Chelsea have already made formal contact with Lyon over a move while Liverpool have reached out to Fofana's representatives to discuss a possible move to Anfield. United are also admirers but are not reported to have reached out to Lyon or Fofana's team at this point. Nottingham Forest have also shown interest in the winger. Lyon paid €17million to sign the Belgium international from Gent 18 months ago and will be expecting a fee of €50m (£43m) if their young star is to leave this summer. Chelsea are in the market for another wide option after deciding not to take up their option to sign Jadon Sancho on a permanent basis from Manchester United. The Blues were in talks to sign Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund before the World Club Cup but could not get a deal over the line before the pre-competition transfer window closed on 10 June. Liverpool meanwhile have made key additions to their squad with Jeremie Frimpong arriving to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold. A deal for Florian Wirtz is also done with Milos Kerkez also expected to arrive from Bournemouth. More Trending But another attacking option is also on the club's list of targets. United meanwhile have signed Matheus Cunha and hope to bring in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford to join him. Alejandro Garnacho, their most used wide option last season, is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer along with Antony, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.
