Infantino explores Egypt's beauty - Sports - Al-Ahram Weekly
Infantino expressed his happiness to be spending his summer vacation in Egypt, emphasising the uniqueness of football in a country he described as proud of the game.
'The passion for football runs deep in Egypt... and the North Coast is one of the jewels of the Mediterranean,' he said.
In the coastal city of New Alamein, Infantino met Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi and Abu Rida. The visit focused on strengthening collaboration to support the development of football in Egypt.
In a phone call, Egypt's Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli extended a warm welcome to Infantino. During the call, Madbouli thanked the FIFA president for choosing Egypt as a destination for his family vacation, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on Saturday.
This came during a meeting between Sobhi and Infantino, in the presence of Abu Rida. 'Choosing Egypt to spend the holiday reflects the international community's growing trust in Egypt as a premier tourist destination,' Sobhi said, adding that 'this underscores the country's safety, stability, and its prominent position on the global tourism map.'
'Infantino's visit is a testament to the appeal of Egypt's modern cities, especially New Alamein which offers world-class amenities and infrastructure, making it an attractive option for visitors from around the world,' Sobhi added.
Infantino took to his official Instagram account to reflect on the call he received from Madbouli. 'It was an honour to have a call with the Prime Minister of Egypt, Mostafa Madbouli, and to meet my good friend, the Minister of Youth and Sport, Ashraf Sobhi, alongside FIFA council member and President of the Egyptian Football Association Hani Abu Rida, in Alamein, on Egypt's northern coast, one of the true jewels of the Mediterranean.
'We are working closely together to support the development of football in Egypt- a country where passion for our beautiful game runs deep. You only have to look at the incredible support for clubs like Al Ahly, especially from their fans during the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, to see just how much football means here.
'Egypt is a proud football nation and it's always that energy and commitment [I see] first-hand.'
Also, this week the EFA had the opportunity to 'Give every talent a chance' through the FIFA Talent Development Schemes (TDS) programme. Youth development enables each Member Association (MA) to reach its full potential through the TDS where 25 Egyptian female coaches participated in cooperation between FIFA and the Egyptian Football Association, hosted by the National Teams Centre in Cairo.
According to FIFA, the conclusion of the first phase of the FIFA TDS data clearly showed that talent development has a positive impact upon later success, both domestically and internationally.
A concerted effort from all stakeholders (FIFA, confederations, associations, leagues and clubs) to influence the key factors of talent development could lead to a higher competitive balance. The top MAs appear to be supporting talent development throughout the pathway to a greater extent. However, it is clear that there is still work to be done to truly give every talent a chance. 'Everything is connected in our sport. We are all connected. Giving every talent a chance requires everyone to play their part,' Infantino said.
The first phase included Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubia, with junior men's tests taking place on Monday and Tuesday, while women's tests were held on Wednesday. The second phase was held in Port Said on Friday. The tests were attended by Mustafa Azzam, Executive Director of the Egyptian Football Association, and Alaa Nabil, technical director of the association and project supervisor. Also present were Ahmed Al-Gohari, project director, Atef Attia, general coordinator, and a FIFA delegation, which included Anthony Baffoe, director of the Talent Project in Africa, and Laban Scott Lippi, Harry Varley, and Leszczew Georgiowski, all talent scouts.
The project includes technical directors Rami Adel and Youssef Fawaz, along with Bassem Khairat, the youth goalkeeper coach, and technical directors Mustafa Mounir and Nashwa Sharabi, in addition to Rama Gweili, the girls' coordinator. The project also included talent scouts Mohamed Al-Yamani, Ahmed Abdel-Latif, and Sherif Al-Tala'a.
The TDS project aims to discover talented players at the age group (born in 2011) and provide them with technical, health and physical support under the auspices of the Egyptian Football Association, through the association's technical director and the best training cadres.
On the other hand, the EFA received news that the FIFA Referees Committee has announced the list of female referees participating in the Women's World Cup in Morocco, including Egyptian international assistant referee Yara Atef, who has previously represented Egyptian referees in numerous African and international tournaments, most notably the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, and the FIFA Women's World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
Furthermore, Egyptian referees kicked off in Alexandria in preparation for the launch of the new Premier League. The referees were divided into three groups. The first group included 32 referees (18 field referees and 14 assistants).

Egypt's Agricultural Museum to reopen on 16 August with two weeks of free entry - Society
Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation will hold the trial opening of the Egyptian Agricultural Museum—the world's second-oldest agricultural museum—on 16 August, offering free entry for two weeks ahead of its official inauguration. According to a ministry statement on Sunday, the museum will welcome visitors daily from 9:00am to 3:00pm during the trial period to test services and gather feedback. The opening is part of a broader plan to upgrade the museum's cultural facilities following extensive renovations. Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk underscored the museum's historical importance, calling it a living testament to the richness of Egyptian agriculture through the ages. He noted that the opening aligns with the state's strategy to preserve and highlight the cultural heritage of the agricultural sector. Established in 1930 in the former palace of Princess Fatma Ismail, daughter of Khedive Ismail, in Dokki, the museum is second in age only to the Agricultural Museum in Budapest. Originally named the Fouad I Agricultural Museum, it opened to the public in 1938 during King Farouk's reign. The museum traces Egyptian agriculture from the Pharaonic era to the present and is envisioned as a scientific and cultural centre serving researchers, students, and the public. It houses rare artefacts such as ancient farming tools, historical documents, and archaeological plant models, alongside specialized exhibition halls charting the sector's evolution. Its eight sections include the Greek and Roman Museum, the Chinese Friendship Museum, the Scientific and Royal Collections Museum, the Royal Cinema, and the Heritage Library. Farouk expressed hope that the museum will become a leading cultural and tourist destination, describing it as both a heritage landmark and a 'historical record' of Egyptian agriculture. Sesko, Ekitike look to buck trend of ex-Bundesliga forwards struggling after big transfers - World
Benjamin Sesko's long-awaited move from Leipzig to Manchester United is done. Now the real work begins. Sesko and his fellow Premier League arrival from the Bundesliga, Liverpool's Hugo Ekitike, will need to buck a recent trend of highly rated forwards from the German league struggling after they leave. Another with something to prove is Mathys Tel, whose move to Tottenham from Bayern Munich was made permanent despite scoring just two goals in 13 Premier League games on loan last season. Of course, Erling Haaland smashed records as soon as he arrived in the Premier League with Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022. For every star like Haaland, plenty of players like Jadon Sancho, Timo Werner or Randal Kolo Muani lost their way after leaving Germany in big-money deals. A friendly league for forwards One reason might be that the Bundesliga is a happy hunting ground for would-be goalscorers. It led the top five European leagues in terms of goals scored per game last season with 3.13 — the others were all below three — and is the only one to average more than three goals per game in each of the last seven years. Some of that is down to Bayern racking up the score against smaller teams, but Germany is also the home of a tactical shift in world soccer over the past 15 years. High defensive lines and so-called 'gegenpressing' high up the field reward fast, physical forwards who can hustle for the ball and take advantage of a sudden breakaway. Underdog teams are often minded to take risks rather than 'park the bus' and defend deep. Rebuilding careers Sesko will have seen how hard it can be to regain momentum after failing with a new club. When Werner came back to Leipzig in 2023 after a failed stint at Chelsea, he was competing for playing time with Sesko — and eventually lost out. Werner's attempt at another reboot on loan at Tottenham fizzled, without a single Premier League goal last season. Some players never quite recover. The high point of Luka Jovic's career was joining Real Madrid from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019 for a reported 60 million euros ($67.5 million at the time). Once considered a potential successor to Cristiano Ronaldo, six years later the 27-year-old Jovic has just arrived at Greece's AEK Athens after stints back at Frankfurt and with Italy's AC Milan and Fiorentina. In the balance Omar Marmoush's move from Frankfurt to City in January hasn't been a roaring success, but isn't an obvious failure either. This season could be crucial to the Egyptian forward's future after seven goals in 16 Premier League games last season. Kai Havertz was a Champions League winner with Chelsea but has arguably yet to reach his full potential there, or with current team Arsenal. A hamstring injury earlier this year didn't help. It's unclear how much of a long-term future ex-Leipzig player Christopher Nkunku has in Chelsea's large squad. He scored a total of 15 goals last season but only three in the Premier League.
