Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail 2025 Brings Sport, Solidarity to the Atlas Mountains

Morocco World18-04-2025
Rabat – The Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail (HAUT) is returning with a new edition that promises a challenging race through breathtaking landscapes, and also a strong social and economic impact for the local communities in Morocco's Atlas Mountains.
Organizers held a press conference yesterday in Casablanca, announcing that this year's HAUT will take place on May 3 and 4 in the scenic valleys of Imlil and Azzaden Ouirgane, located in the heart of Toubkal National Park.
The organizers spotlighted the event's role in local development and inclusion. Every year, the race brings together villagers, cooperatives, families, and volunteers.
In 2025, over 950 runners from different backgrounds will take part in six different races. These include two ultra-trails, a cani-trail, a junior/cadet race, and a kids' race, all covering a total of 340 kilometers and passing through 15 villages.
While the trails are physically demanding, participants will be able to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural richness of the High Atlas region.
Local communities are at the heart of the event, organizers say. Guides, mule handlers, artisans, and rural families all play a key role. Last year, local guest houses were fully booked during the event. Organizers say they are continuing to support local producers, service providers, and accommodation hosts to promote a model of circular economy and shared growth.
More than 70 local residents and 10 young people will be paid for their work on the event. In addition, 30 volunteers in training for sports management will join the organizing team. The Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail (HAUT) press conference
Organizers noted efforts made to empower women of the region, with local craft cooperatives given the opportunity to showcase their work during the event. In addition, podiums will be decorated with handmade carpets from the region.
Other social and environmental initiatives this year's edition brings are the medical caravan of 15 doctors serving the village of Assif Zagzawen, a sanitation project in Ouirgane, carried out with support from local authorities and NGOs, and environmental, safety, and hospitality training for around 60 people involved in organizing the event.
A new highlight this year is that the Sonasid HAUT is now a qualifying race for the world-famous Sierre-Zinal trail race in Switzerland. With support from the Swiss embassy in Morocco, top Moroccan athletes may now earn the chance to represent the High Atlas on the international stage.
Organizers noted the event's focus on inclusivity, with 40% of this year's participants being women. The introduction of a timed junior and cadet race also supports the development of young athletes in the region. Tags: high atlassonasidtrail

Spain vs Switzerland in Euro 2025 – Preview & Score Prediction

Spain will face Switzerland tonight in the Women's European Championship quarter-final match in Bern. The game will take place at Wankdorf stadium in Bern, Switzerland, starting at 8:00 p.m and will be broadcast live in Morocco on beIN Connect, and internationally via BBC. Spain hope to keep up their winning streak in the ongoing European tournament and clinch the silverware for the third year in a row. After winning the 2023 Women's World Cup and the 2024 UEFA Nations League, the in-form and intimidating Spanish squad remains the team to beat. Spain qualified from the group stages with a 5-0 victory over Portugal in their first game, followed by a 6-2 win against Belgium to reach the quarter-finals, and then secured the top spot by beating Italy 3-1. Spain dominated Group B by claiming nine points out of nine, and they topped the tournament's scoring charts with 14 goals scored so far. Spain are now aiming to secure a place in the semi-finals for the first time since 1997, after falling in the previous Women's Euros. Meanwhile, this is the first time that Switzerland has reached the tournament's knockout rounds. The Swiss squad finished second in Group A, following a narrow 2-1 defeat to Norway in their first group match, a 2-0 triumph over Iceland and a 1-1 draw against Finland. Score Prediction Spain's strong attack may prove too much for the underdog Swiss team, but Switzerland's home advantage could keep the scoreline respectable. Let's call it Spain 3 – 1 Switzerland Tags: Euro 2025SpainSwitzerland

Mohcine Bouriga to Sign with AS FAR

Rabat – The Swiss football club Sion has officially reached a final agreement with AS FAR to complete a deal to sell Moroccan striker Mohcine Bouriga. Reports indicate that the 25-year-old transaction was valued at over €400,000, in addition 25% for future moves to other clubs. The player struggled to adjust to the Swiss league during the season, accumulating 22 appearances by scoring once, keeping 602 minutes on the 2024-25 season. Bouriga made a significant impact in MAS Fez, scoring 12 goals and providing four assists across 29 appearances, and ended the season as the league's top scorer. The forward is expected to join AS FAR lines on a four year deal to be set in motion ahead of the upcoming season under coach Nassim Bayoudh.

Switzerland updates Morocco travel advisory, warns of stray animals and rabies risk

Switzerland's Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) has updated its travel advice for Morocco, explicitly warning tourists to avoid contact with stray animals due to the risk of rabies. «Always keep your distance from stray animals. Several fatal cases of rabies have been reported following dog bites», the FDFA stated in an update made public on Friday. The change follows the death of a Swiss tourist in late June in Taghazout, a coastal town north of Agadir. The woman had been playing with a stray dog when it suddenly bit her. Although experts initially assessed the bite as superficial and non-threatening, medical staff cleaned and disinfected the wound and administered an anti-rabies injection. Despite this, her condition deteriorated rapidly.
