Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail 2025 Brings Sport, Solidarity to the Atlas Mountains

Rabat – The Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail (HAUT) is returning with a new edition that promises a challenging race through breathtaking landscapes, and also a strong social and economic impact for the local communities in Morocco's Atlas Mountains. Organizers held a press conference yesterday in Casablanca, announcing that this year's HAUT will take place on May 3 and 4 in the scenic valleys of Imlil and Azzaden Ouirgane, located in the heart of Toubkal National Park. The organizers spotlighted the event's role in local development and inclusion. Every year, the race brings together villagers, cooperatives, families, and volunteers. In 2025, over 950 runners from different backgrounds will take part in six different races. These include two ultra-trails, a cani-trail, a junior/cadet race, and a kids' race, all covering a total of 340 kilometers and passing through 15 villages. While the trails are physically demanding, participants will be able to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural richness of the High Atlas region. Local communities are at the heart of the event, organizers say. Guides, mule handlers, artisans, and rural families all play a key role. Last year, local guest houses were fully booked during the event. Organizers say they are continuing to support local producers, service providers, and accommodation hosts to promote a model of circular economy and shared growth. More than 70 local residents and 10 young people will be paid for their work on the event. In addition, 30 volunteers in training for sports management will join the organizing team. The Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail (HAUT) press conference Organizers noted efforts made to empower women of the region, with local craft cooperatives given the opportunity to showcase their work during the event. In addition, podiums will be decorated with handmade carpets from the region. Other social and environmental initiatives this year's edition brings are the medical caravan of 15 doctors serving the village of Assif Zagzawen, a sanitation project in Ouirgane, carried out with support from local authorities and NGOs, and environmental, safety, and hospitality training for around 60 people involved in organizing the event. A new highlight this year is that the Sonasid HAUT is now a qualifying race for the world-famous Sierre-Zinal trail race in Switzerland. With support from the Swiss embassy in Morocco, top Moroccan athletes may now earn the chance to represent the High Atlas on the international stage. Organizers noted the event's focus on inclusivity, with 40% of this year's participants being women. The introduction of a timed junior and cadet race also supports the development of young athletes in the region. Tags: high atlassonasidtrail

HAUT 2025 : Trail running for a stronger High Atlas

From May 2 to 4, 2025, Toubkal National Park will host the 4th edition of the High Atlas Ultra Trail (HAUT), bringing the heart of the Moroccan mountains to life. More than 900 runners will take on challenging courses ranging from 10 to 120 km. Now a staple on the international trail-running calendar, this year's event introduces new features, including a timed race for cadets and juniors, a Cani-Trail, and a children's race—further enhancing its inclusive, family-friendly appeal. But HAUT is more than a sporting challenge—it's also a catalyst for local development. The 2025 edition will involve 145 people, including 70 paid local residents, 30 volunteers in training, and 10 youth participants. Five local cooperatives will be spotlighted, particularly through artisanal production and logistical support. The event is expected to generate 3,000 overnight stays and 9,000 meals, offering a direct boost to the valley economies. As members of ITRA's Green Commitment program, organizers Othmane Benhalima and Kaoutar Bendoumou champion sustainable trail running by minimizing waste, promoting runner awareness, and protecting local biodiversity. HAUT's social impact is also front and center, with plans for a medical caravan in Assif Zagzawen, a sanitation project in Ouirgane, and initiatives to empower rural women. Supported by Sonasid and key institutional partners including the Swiss Embassy in Morocco and Toubkal National Park, HAUT 2025 also enjoys a strategic partnership with Swiss trail races Sierre-Zinal and Thyon-Dixence to support the training of young Moroccan athletes. Blending personal endurance with community impact, HAUT 2025 proves that running can drive meaningful change across an entire region.

Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail 2025: A Race for Nature, Culture, and Community

Rabat – The fast-approaching 4th edition of the Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail (Haut) promises a powerful experience that connects nature, culture, and community in the majestic High Atlas Mountains. It will run through several villages and the stunning Toubkal National Park, Morocco's highest and most iconic natural reserve, said the organizers at a press conference today in Casablanca. This year's HAUT , scheduled for May 3-4, promises to be more than just a race. The 2025 edition introduces two brand-new elements: a timed cadets and juniors race to encourage young athletes and help them reach elite levels, and a medical caravan in the rural region of Assif Zagrawen, to offer healthcare services on April 19–20, ahead of the main race. 'We have some great additions this year,' said Kaoutar Bendoumou, the event's director. 'Beyond our usual solidarity actions, we've added a medical caravan and a youth race to motivate young runners and support their growth,' she told Morocco World News. This trail is organized by and for the people of the region, said the organizers. One unique aspect is the strong focus on local development and cultural preservation. Local women's associations are producing handmade Amazigh carpets, which will be awarded to podium finishers across all races. Press conference in Rabat ahead of the Sonasid High Atlas Ultra Trail 2025 These carpets, rich in meaning and tradition, symbolize the beauty and strength of the region, which was affected by Al Haouz earthquake that hit central Morocco in September 2023. An exhibition of local products will also be held in the village where the race takes place to showcase and support small producers. Local residents are employed in various aspects of the race, including logistics and hospitality, to reinforce the trail's goal of creating lasting economic opportunities. This year, 40% of participants are women, a significant increase from last year's 30%, thanks to the SHE RUN initiative. The organizers hope to keep pushing for more inclusion and equal opportunities in endurance sports. One of the highlights of the evening was the presence of Youssef Ait Meskouk, a young elite trail runner from Imlil who won last year's 42 km race. He spoke about how, in the past, young people like him in villages such as Imlil didn't have access to the world of trail running or the opportunities that come with it. 'Before, we didn't even know what trail running was,' he told Morocco World News. 'Now, thanks to HAUT , we've had the chance to train and even compete internationally.' Youssef was one of the athletes who qualified to compete in Switzerland last year through a partnership with the Swiss Embassy and international races like Sierre-Zinal and Thyon-Dixence. The partnership, now in its second year, includes support with visas and full travel coverage for the top male and female winners of the HAUT 42 km race. 'Running in Switzerland with some of the best athletes in the world was a dream come true,' Youssef said. 'This year, I hope to do even better, and maybe win again!' he added. The organizers also spoke of the event's continued commitment to the environment through the ITRA Green Commitment Program. Organizers aim to reduce waste, employ locals, and promote eco-friendly practices throughout the trail. A new race shirt and symbolic medal were also unveiled at the press conference. The medal features Amazigh-inspired designs that proudly represent the region's identity and values. The new race shirt and symbolic medal 'This isn't just a race; it's a celebration of nature, culture, and community,' Bendoumou stated. 'It's also a chance to show the world the beauty of our region,' she added. Tags: high atlas ultra trailsportstrail
