HAUT 2025 : Trail running for a stronger High Atlas

Ya Biladi18-04-2025
From May 2 to 4, 2025, Toubkal National Park will host the 4th edition of the High Atlas Ultra Trail (HAUT), bringing the heart of the Moroccan mountains to life. More than 900 runners will take on challenging courses ranging from 10 to 120 km. Now a staple on the international trail-running calendar, this year's event introduces new features, including a timed race for cadets and juniors, a Cani-Trail, and a children's race—further enhancing its inclusive, family-friendly appeal.
But HAUT is more than a sporting challenge—it's also a catalyst for local development. The 2025 edition will involve 145 people, including 70 paid local residents, 30 volunteers in training, and 10 youth participants. Five local cooperatives will be spotlighted, particularly through artisanal production and logistical support. The event is expected to generate 3,000 overnight stays and 9,000 meals, offering a direct boost to the valley economies.
As members of ITRA's Green Commitment program, organizers Othmane Benhalima and Kaoutar Bendoumou champion sustainable trail running by minimizing waste, promoting runner awareness, and protecting local biodiversity. HAUT's social impact is also front and center, with plans for a medical caravan in Assif Zagzawen, a sanitation project in Ouirgane, and initiatives to empower rural women.
Supported by Sonasid and key institutional partners including the Swiss Embassy in Morocco and Toubkal National Park, HAUT 2025 also enjoys a strategic partnership with Swiss trail races Sierre-Zinal and Thyon-Dixence to support the training of young Moroccan athletes.
Blending personal endurance with community impact, HAUT 2025 proves that running can drive meaningful change across an entire region.

Tahar Benjelloun Calls Out Tourism Prices and Declining Standards in Morocco

Moroccan writer Tahar Benjelloun has voiced dismay at what he describes as the decline in Morocco's tourism standards, warning that many Moroccans abroad now feel unwelcome in their own country. In his article 'Très cher Maroc! (2)', published recently by Moroccan media Le360, Benjelloun drew on readers' testimonies that reflect anger over inflated costs and poor services. Still 'the most beautiful country in the world' One Moroccan living abroad wrote: 'The daily scams, the special MRE prices in July and August, the ferry crossing more expensive than the Channel, hotels that call themselves five stars but barely reach two or three. Theft and corruption are everywhere.' Benjelloun said this sentiment is widespread. He noted that rising ticket prices and the gap between cost and quality discourage many Moroccans abroad from visiting during the summer. 'The rising price of plane tickets in summer has dissuaded MREs (Moroccans residing abroad) from coming back to the most beautiful country in the world,' he wrote. Some, he added, chose Spain or Turkey instead. 'Their children will come less and less to Morocco' For him, the problem lies not only in the cost but in what people receive in return. 'Something is expensive when neither its quality nor its quantity corresponds to the price asked. You can see this every day in restaurants,' he argued. He warned that this pattern risks distancing future generations of the diaspora from Morocco altogether. 'They think their children will come less and less to Morocco and, worse, will stop sending money,' he said. Benjelloun urged authorities to intervene before the situation deepens. 'The competent authorities should do something against this drift, which does not seem to stop but instead spreads improperly,' he wrote. His remarks ignited a lively debate among Moroccans at home and abroad. For some, Benjelloun went too far by publicly exposing the country's shortcomings in the media. They described the renowned writer's move as damaging to Morocco's image on the international stage. And they argued that criticism of this kind should remain an internal matter, not aired in a way that could deter tourists and investors. Some also pointed out that Morocco, despite its flaws, is slowly but surely progressing, and that such progress risks being overshadowed by harsh portrayals. Others defended the writer, insisting that he only voiced what countless citizens and members of the diaspora have long endured in silence from overpriced services, declining quality, and the frustration of feeling taken for granted. To them, this column simply put words to a reality that authorities prefer to downplay. Tags: Moroccan diasporaMoroccoTahar BenjellounTourism

Houcine Ammouta Parts Ways with Al Jazira

Al Jazira have confirmed the departure of head coach Houcine Ammouta following the club's defeat to Khorfakkan. The Emirati side announced the termination of his contract this week, thanking Ammouta and his backroom staff for their work and wishing them success in the future. The loss to Khorfakkan, in which Moroccan forward Tarik Tissoudali scored once and provided two assists, appears to have been a decisive factor. Ammouta joined Al Jazira in the summer of 2024 on a two-year deal, aiming to restore the club to the top of Emirati football. His spell, however, ends less than a year later. The 55-year-old has enjoyed a notable coaching career. With Jordan, he guided the national team to their first AFC Asian Cup final in 2023 and helped them top their World Cup qualifying group, laying the groundwork for the 2026 qualifiers and the 2027 Asian Cup. His approach, based on possession, high pressing and quick transitions, proved highly effective, bringing the best out of players such as Musa Al-Tamari and Yazan Al-Naimat. He stepped down from the Jordan post in June 2024 for personal reasons. His successor, Jamal Sellami, later led the side to their first World Cup qualification, building on the foundations Ammouta left behind. Tags: Al JaziraAmmoutaUAE
