HAUT 2025 : Trail running for a stronger High Atlas
From May 2 to 4, 2025, Toubkal National Park will host the 4th edition of the High Atlas Ultra Trail (HAUT), bringing the heart of the Moroccan mountains to life. More than 900 runners will take on challenging courses ranging from 10 to 120 km. Now a staple on the international trail-running calendar, this year's event introduces new features, including a timed race for cadets and juniors, a Cani-Trail, and a children's race—further enhancing its inclusive, family-friendly appeal.
But HAUT is more than a sporting challenge—it's also a catalyst for local development. The 2025 edition will involve 145 people, including 70 paid local residents, 30 volunteers in training, and 10 youth participants. Five local cooperatives will be spotlighted, particularly through artisanal production and logistical support. The event is expected to generate 3,000 overnight stays and 9,000 meals, offering a direct boost to the valley economies.
As members of ITRA's Green Commitment program, organizers Othmane Benhalima and Kaoutar Bendoumou champion sustainable trail running by minimizing waste, promoting runner awareness, and protecting local biodiversity. HAUT's social impact is also front and center, with plans for a medical caravan in Assif Zagzawen, a sanitation project in Ouirgane, and initiatives to empower rural women.
Supported by Sonasid and key institutional partners including the Swiss Embassy in Morocco and Toubkal National Park, HAUT 2025 also enjoys a strategic partnership with Swiss trail races Sierre-Zinal and Thyon-Dixence to support the training of young Moroccan athletes.
Blending personal endurance with community impact, HAUT 2025 proves that running can drive meaningful change across an entire region.
