NHAI Chairman visits Kerala to inspect highway projects in Trivandrum, Kollam
New Delhi [India], June 1 (ANI): To evaluate progress of various National Highway Projects in Kerala and to have an in-depth review, National Highways Authority of India Chairman, Santosh Kumar Yadav arrived in the State on Sunday, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways said in an official statement.
He led a comprehensive inspection of project stretches in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts, focusing on structurally sensitive areas and zones prone to drainage issues and water-related vulnerabilities leading to quality construction and enhancing public convenience.
The inspection also covered key locations such as Enchakkal, Kazhakuttom, Chembakamangalam, Kottayam, and Mevaram. These sites include vertical high-cut sections and areas requiring urgent evaluation of stability and water flow management. The Chairman was accompanied by technical experts from the concessionaire, Independent Engineer, Project Director of Thiruvananthapuram and NHAI Regional Officer, Kerala.
To comprehensively assess the progress on various National Highway projects in the state, a high-level review meeting has been scheduled. This meeting will include all NHAI Project Directors, concessionaires, consultants, and contractors involved in the implementation of National Highway projects across Kerala. Key discussion points will include expediting project timelines, enhancing construction quality, strengthening monitoring mechanisms, and minimizing public inconvenience.
The NHAI Chairman will also meet the Chief Secretary of Kerala to address critical challenges affecting National Highway development. The meeting will focus on resolving systemic bottlenecks, improving coordination between agencies, and planning strategic interventions for smoother execution of current and future projects.

Greenfield highway project between Karur and Coimbatore likely to be delayed
The proposed greenfield highway between Karur and Coimbatore is likely to be delayed by two years. Taking into account mounting traffic bottlenecks because of exponential growth in vehicular movement on the existing highway between Karur and Coimbatore, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had mooted a proposal to form a new road between Karur and Coimbatore a few years ago. The NHAI officials subsequently carried out several surveys to measure the volume of traffic as well as identify the alignment of the new road. However, the proposal did not make the much-needed progress, though the subject continued to be on the agenda at NHAI meetings. The NHAI subsequently appointed a consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). The consultant almost completed the DPR work after making several visits to various areas between Karur and Coimbatore. As per the proposal, a six-lane highway with service roads wherever they are required will be formed between Karur and Coimbatore. The alignment of the proposed highway had been designed. It will run about five km parallel to the existing highway between Karur and Coimbatore. According to sources, the identification of land required for the project had been completed. As per the draft alignment, it might have to acquire 900 hectares of land. It is estimated that it might require ₹3,500 crore for executing the project. It was expected that the NHAI would approve the project in the second half of 2024. However, the NHAI had been going slow on the process and it was yet to give clearance to the project. A senior official of the NHAI told The Hindu that preparation of DPR was on. Widening of the existing highway between Karur and Coimbatore, funded by the Ministry of Road Transport, had been taken up. It was expected that it would be completed within a few months. As per a recent survey, it was established that the existing road, once it was widened with paved shoulders, was sufficient to handle the volume of traffic for the time being. The volume of traffic would be closely monitored. Greenfield highway was a high volume project in terms of fund allocation. Hence, it was getting delayed. Efforts were on to get the approval for the project as early as possible, he said.

Cement demand to grow 6-7.5% in FY26 amid recovery in infrastructure and housing: Report
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): The Indian cement industry is likely to see a demand growth of 6 to 7.5 per cent in the current financial year (FY26), according to a report by Systematix Research. The report highlighted that with consolidation-led discipline taking hold and strong momentum in infrastructure and housing sectors, the industry is entering a more stable and profitable phase. It said, 'With consolidation-led discipline settling in and momentum building in infrastructure and housing, industry demand is expected to grow by 6-7.5 per cent in FY26'. The report noted that the sector exited FY25 on a stronger footing. The last quarter of the previous financial year saw a visible recovery in both demand and pricing after a slow first half. Increased government capital expenditure towards the end of FY25 helped revive construction activity in major markets. The report said 'Cement volume for companies under our coverage grew by 11 per cent after a slow H1 due to an upswing in commercial activity and a ramp-up in government execution. In FY25, the cement industry ended with a capacity of about 655 MTPA (+4.8 per cent YoY). This also supported price hikes, which were partially absorbed in regions like the East and North. In May 2025, the report added that the cement companies attempted price hikes across different regions, ranging from Rs 5 to Rs 10 per bag. However, due to weak demand in several areas, the absorption of these hikes remained limited. Regional factors such as early monsoons and heat waves played a key role in affecting demand. In the East, demand dropped sharply due to early monsoons, but prices still rose by Rs 46 per bag. The South faced flat demand conditions as heat waves impacted construction activities. As a result, price hikes in the region are expected to be postponed to the second quarter of FY26, since the fourth quarter remained muted. Meanwhile, the report mentioned that central India recorded a modest hike of Rs 2 per bag, and Northern markets saw better traction, with prices increasing by Rs 20-30 per bag. Despite these regional challenges, the average cement price across India rose 1.6 per cent month-on-month in May 2025, reaching Rs 367 per bag. The industry also benefited from a favourable cost environment and improving capacity utilisation, further supporting a positive outlook for FY26. (ANI)

"Another big diplomatic bungle": Jairam Ramesh on reports of PM Modi not attending G7 Summit in Canada
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday targeted the BJP government over reports of Prime Minister Narendra Modi not attending the G7 Summit, scheduled to be held in Canada this year. In a post on X, Jairam termed it as another 'big diplomatic bungle', and said that for the first time in six years, India will not be in attendance at the Summit. Jairam Ramesh viewed India's absence from the G7 Summit as a significant diplomatic oversight. He emphasised that India's participation in such forums is crucial, given its growing global influence and the need to shape international policies. 'The tradition of inviting Indian PMs continued after 2014. But now, for the first time in 6 years, Vishwaguru will not be in attendance at the Canada summit. Whatever spin may be given, the fact remains that this is yet another big diplomatic bungle,' the Congress leader added in the post. He specifically highlighted that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had attended the Summit in 2007 where the famous Singh-Merkel formula for climate change negotiations were unveiled. 'The G7 Summit of the Presidents of the USA and France, the Prime Ministers of UK, Japan, Italy, and Canada and the Chancellor of Germany is taking place in Kananaskis in Alberta, Canada, from 15 June 2025. The Presidents of Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and Ukraine and the Prime Minister of Australia have also been invited to the summit. Before 2014, G7 was actually G8 for many years and had included Russia,' the Congress MP said. 'Dr. Manmohan Singh would be invited for G8 Summits where his voice would be heard. US President Donald Trump on Friday (local time) once again claimed credit for brokering a cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan, asserting that his administration's trade negotiations potentially averted a nuclear war between the two nations. During an interaction with reporters, Trump expressed pride in achieving peace through trade rather than military conflict, reigniting debates over the US role in the recent India-Pakistan ceasefire following the escalation of tension after the Pahalgam terror attack and India's subsequent reply through Operation Sindoor. The Canadian government is set to host this year's G7 Summit in Alberta on June 15-17. (ANI)
