Jean Marsh: Veteran stage and screen actress best known as no-nonsense maid
Jean Marsh, the stage and screen actress who has died at the age of 90, was best known for her role as a no-nonsense parlour maid in classic TV drama Upstairs, Downstairs.
The saga which chronicled the lives of a rich family in London and their servants through various historical events between 1903 and 1930, became a firm favourite of TV viewers when the costume drama aired between 1971 and 1975.
Marsh co-created the hit show along with friend and fellow actress Eileen Atkins, after they both realised in 1969 they had relatives in domestic service.
Years later Upstairs, Downstairs, set in the large townhouse of 165 Eaton Place, won Marsh an Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a limited series for her role as hard-bitten but ultimately kind-hearted maid Rose Buck.
She said: 'I think Upstairs, Downstairs has a very special energy. There's something about it that certainly brings out the best in people.'
She was born Jean Lyndsey Torren Marsh on July 1 1934, in Stoke Newington, east London.
Her mother worked in a bar and as a theatre dresser, while her father was a handyman and printer's assistant.
Marsh became interested in performing after taking dance and mime classes as therapy for an illness.
She began acting on stage, with a stint at Huddersfield Rep in the 1950s, before moving to London.
TV classics such as The Twilight Zone and Danger Man gave Marsh her earliest TV appearances.
There were also parts in three Doctor Who adventures, most notably as William Hartnell's short-lived companion Sara Kingdom.
Upstairs, Downstairs had originally been devised as a comedy, before it became a hugely successful drama in its original 1970s run.
A minor stroke forced Marsh to take a break in 2011, but she later returned to work.
She reprised the role of Rose Buck in a BBC revamp of the series from 2010 to 2012.
Marsh and Atkins teamed up again to create another successful historical drama with The House of Eliott.
Roles in films such as the fantasy adventure Willow (1988), thriller Frenzy (1972) and war movie The Eagle Has Landed (1976) were among her big screen successes.
Marsh also had an acclaimed stage career and starred in several TV series including Sense And Sensibility, Hawaii Five-O and Murder, She Wrote.
She was married to Jon Pertwee for five years before divorcing in 1960.
There were also relationships with actors Kenneth Haigh and Albert Finney and the director Sir Michael Lindsay-Hogg.
She was made an OBE in the 2012 Queen's Birthday Honours for her services to drama.

The sexual abuse campaigner and former reality star Georgia Harrison has told the BBC she is "honoured" to be receiving an MBE. Harrison, 30, will be awarded for her efforts to tackle violence against women and girls, which includes working with the government on the Online Safety Act in 2023. She says she feels "a responsibility to help" the many women who are victims of crimes such as intimate image abuse and deepfaking. Her ex-partner Stephen Bear was jailed for 21 months in 2023 after uploading sexual footage of himself and Harrison to OnlyFans filmed without her consent. Harrison, who is being awarded her MBE as part of the King's Birthday Honours, said she had to re-read the letter she received from King Charles "three times" as she "just couldn't believe it". "It's definitely not something I anticipated and it feels nice to have my work recognised because with campaigning sometimes you feel like a lot goes unnoticed," she told the BBC. The former reality star appeared on ITV shows such as The Only Way is Essex in 2017 and Love Island in 2018, where she entered the villa as a bombshell and gained nationwide fame. It was during 2019 that she entered MTV's The Challenge, where she met fellow reality star Bear. The pair dated on and off for a few months, with Harrison discovering in December 2020 that the now 35-year-old Bear had uploaded intimate CCTV footage of them to streaming service OnlyFans without her consent. She subsequently reported the crime and Bear was sentenced after being found guilty of voyeurism and discussing private, sexual photographs and films. Harrison was then awarded compensation in a damages claim and said she would donate some of the £207,900 to charity. She says she often feels a "responsibility to help" as she worries about the increase of social media influencers fuelling misogyny and sexism. Harrison, who is currently expecting her first child, said: "I'd be scared to have a teenager right now, being completely honest, I really would be terrified". "We've seen with the rise of Andrew Tate and some men thinking the thing to do with women is to mistreat them and think they can do what they want with them," she said. She added she feels the need to let women know, "they deserve to be treated fairly, they deserve consent and the right to their own bodies". A recent poll of teachers in the UK found three in five believe social media use has had a negative effect on behaviour in schools - with Tate being named as a reason by a number of teachers in the poll. Harrison says she has been into some schools recently to watch consent workshops with primary school age children, describing them as "brilliant". She hopes that these type of lessons will have an impact for the next generation. "I'd like to think by the time my child gets to the age where consent becomes an issue, things are going to be a lot better, because we are doing something to educate around consent and that's something that's never really been done before in this generation," she added. Harrison says "on a positive note" women have told her case and "the strength you found" has encouraged them to take their perpetrators to court for causes of rape, domestic abuse and intimate image abuse. Since Bear's conviction in 2022, she has campaigned to increase the support for women and girls who have faced similar crimes to her by working on the Online Safety Act and as part of the Women and Equalities Committee. She says she has been working with the committee on improving timescales for women who want to report crimes against them - as currently they only have six months after a crime has taken place to tell the police about it. "It took me about four months to even realise a crime had been committed to me when it happened so its scary to think, had I been notified a few months later, I may not have had the right to justice. "It should be a lot easier for women out there," she added. Harrison says she has also been receiving more and more messages from victims of deepfakes, which are videos, pictures or audio clips made with AI to look or sound real. There have been recent concerns about schoolchildren using apps to distribute AI-generated deepfake content, despite the practice being illegal. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) - a UK-based charity partly funded by tech firms - said in February there had been 245 reports of AI-generated child sexual abuse in 2024 compared with 51 in 2023, a 380% increase. "I think [deepfake] technology is getting a lot more impressive and easier to access," Harrison said. Earlier this year, the government announced laws to tackle the threat of child sexual abuse images being generated by AI, which include making it illegal to possess, create, or distribute AI tools designed to create such material. Claudia Winkleman ‘incredibly grateful' for MBE in King's Birthday Honours
TV presenter Claudia Winkleman has said she is 'incredibly grateful' to have been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the King's Birthday Honours. The Traitors presenter was honoured on Friday alongside her Strictly Come Dancing co-host, Tess Daly, for services to broadcasting. Winkleman, 53, said: 'I am incredibly grateful to receive this honour. 'It's a real privilege to work with extraordinarily talented people and I have only got this because of them. So this is for the BBC, the traitors and the faithful, for pianos and for the cha cha. 'I will buy a hat and am taking my mum. I am ridiculously lucky and will celebrate with Tess by doing a paso doble.' Born and raised in London, she studied history of art at Cambridge University and after graduating began her career as a TV and radio presenter, fronting a range of BBC TV shows including Comic Relief and The Great British Sewing Bee. She also presented on BBC Radio 2 until 2024, hosting different programmes on the station including the comedy quiz series Hot Gossip, the Claudia Winkleman Arts Show and Claudia On Sunday. In 2004, she joined BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing, presenting its weekday companion show It Takes Two until she passed it to broadcaster Zoe Ball, with her taking on the Sunday night results show alongside Daly. The presenter joined Daly for the main show every Saturday from 2014, after Sir Bruce Forsyth stepped down. The Bafta-winning presenter is also behind the hit BBC game show The Traitors and won best entertainment performance at the 2023 awards. She will be fronting its charity spin-off series, The Celebrity Traitors, in which 19 famous faces will enter the castle in the Highlands, including comedian Alan Carr, actor and broadcaster Sir Stephen Fry and retired diver Tom Daley. Stephen Lambert, who is also recognised in the King's Birthday Honours and is the founder and chief executive of Studio Lambert, said: 'I'm thrilled that Claudia Winkleman is being honoured too; her brilliant hosting has played such a key role in the success of The Traitors.' Studio Lambert is the production company behind The Traitors, Gogglebox, Race Across the World, and Squid Game: The Challenge. Winkleman hosts the Channel 4 general knowledge gameshow One Question, where she recently described wanting to cry after a father and daughter won £100,000, making history on the programme for winning the top prize without looking at all of the possible answers. She also presents Channel 4's The Piano, in which she is joined by singer-songwriter Mika and Grammy-winner Jon Batiste, as they hunt for Britain's most talented undiscovered pianists. She will host a concert for this year's BBC Proms, including a matinee and evening Traitors-themed performance, which is expected to have a range of famous classical works, alongside new arrangements of some of the music from the popular psychological reality programme. Winkleman is a trustee of the The British Museum and a patron of Child Bereavement UK.

Peacock just announced the cast of Season 4 of The Traitors, and so far, the response has not been great. You expect a random mix of celebrities for this show, but some fans think the show took things a step in the wrong direction by adding Michael Rapaport to the cast. If Peacock's goal was to get people talking, it definitely worked. Michael was one of 23 stars confirmed for Season 4 of The Traitors. If history repeats itself, there might be one or two late additions to the game as well. Either way, social media immediately lit up with reactions to seeing Michael in the lineup, and it's not because of his terrible acting skills. It's because of his extensive history of using racist language and sharing far-right talking points on his social media. 'Amazing Traitors cast sans Michael Rapaport. He's a piece of sh*t and it's extremely annoying that Bravo and Peacock keep giving him a platform,' wrote one Traitors fan. Another said, 'Peacock and NBC continuing to platform Michael Rapaport as he spews bigoted hateful ideology is so dangerous. I desperately need him to be the first murder #TheTraitorsUS.' Although most fans are bashing Peacock for including Michael, it's worth highlighting that there are some positive elements to this cast. They've got five Real Housewives in the cast, including the return of Dorinda Medley. There's also a wealth of LGBTQ representation, with Monet X Change, Kristen Kish, and Johnny Weir in the lineup.
