Diaries from ‘Operation Parakram'

Hindustan Times11-05-2025

'Operation Parakram' was launched by the Indian military after the terrorist attack on its Parliament at New Delhi on December 13, 2001. The might of Indian military was mobilised for an impending war with Pakistan, the perpetrators of the said terrorist attack. I had assumed command of my tank regiment during august 2011 and were out in the field for routine training and field firing in the deserts of Rajasthan with skeleton equipment and crews which got supplemented with our complete wherewithal once orders were received to mobilise to our battle stations. Spirits were high, morale touching the sky and my men and tanks raring to march across the international border. Large-scale movement of troops on road and rail to get to their designated take-off zones for an offensive or defensive roles was witnessed by the world and as a young Commandant of a potent tank regiment, there seemed no doubt that the fortune of fulfilling the ultimate dream of going to battle may become a reality.
It was on the night of Lohri, January 13, 2002, when Gen Pervez Musharraf, the president of Pakistan addressed his nation , an address laced with war rhetoric of an impending conflict with India, that we were quite certain that the balloon will go up. Well, we waited for the go ahead. Extensive reconnaissance, intelligence gathering and surveillance inputs were constantly fed to the fighting units to sharpen their tactics for a wholesome victory. We were at an operational briefing at a tactical headquarters and an interesting revelation through a radio intercept shocked us no end. Thus went the conversation between a tank regimental commander with his boss at the higher headquarters, 'Janaab, mere paas sirf 15 haathi (tanks) hain jo larai ke qabil hain baaki sab khalaas hain (Sir, I have only 15 tanks battle worthy out of a total of 45).' There was no surprise or shock in his response when the boss was quick to order, 'Bashir, chaurahe aur museum par khare haathion ko topi pehnaao aur apni fauj mein shaamil karo.. ginti poori honi chahiye (Bashir, remove trophy tanks at the roundabouts and public places and make up the total anyways)'. Similar intercepts of inadequacy in the war fighting machinery of our adversary came to light. Corresponding morale of Pakistani troops and its will to fight became evidently clear. Sadly, the war did not see the light of the day for whatever reasons and our dreams of visiting 'Sukkur' , a city in the Sind province of Pakistan, on our tanks, which was one of our objectives remained unfulfilled. But , this was the closest we came to an all out war after Operation Brass tacks in 1987, when cricket diplomacy bailed Pakistan out.
Now, coming to the prevailing situation post-Pahalgam tragic episode. Both the nations are yet again on a sensitive brink. Pakistan is what it is. Rhetoric, false propaganda, denial and innocence in full demonstration. The situation of its economy, national strength and overall health has not seen an upward climb. Albeit, it has deteriorated since 2001, a good two decades and a half back when situation was precarious. It's military capability to get into an open confrontation with the fourth largest military of the world is slender to say the least. At best , cross border firings to expand its outdated ammunition is the recourse to show an offensive spirit. On the other hand, India's wiser strategy to stifle, suffocate and starve and keep 'cards close to the chest' will prove to be a force multiplier. Keeping our powder dry continues unabated, however. Like Sun Tzu, the famous Chinese general , philosopher and strategist righty remarked, 'The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.'

'There is a lot of enthusiasm among Indians in Berlin. They are very inspired by India's growth story and the action taken by the country against terrorists under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Our visit to Germany has been very good. Germany has also condemned terrorism. We are very satisfied with the visit. We were given a lot of respect in the six countries we visited, and our concerns were heard, and our stance has been made clear,' Prasad added. "They are dragging Pahalgam attack, Prayagraj stampede into Bengaluru stampede": Kumaraswamy accuses Karnataka govt of diversionary tactics

Mandya (Karnataka) [India], June 7 (ANI): Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday demanded clarity from the Karnataka government regarding its investigation into the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He also accused the Congress-led government of 'dragging in' the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the Prayagraj stampede to deflect criticism over its own failures. 'The government is making decisions every hour on the stampede issue. What will they do in the end? First, there was a judicial investigation. Now there is a CID investigation. Finally, they will get the investigation report. What is this government doing? If any decision is made, there should be clarity,' Kumaraswamy told reporters. 'The government is a complete are dragging Pahalgam and Prayagraj here for the mistakes they made. What is the connection between the Pahalgam incident and this?' he added. Earlier, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations from their posts, taking 'moral responsibility' for the stampede that took place near M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. As per ESPNCricinfo, the resignation has been submitted to the president of the board, Raghuram Bhat. Also in Bengaluru, CID officials paid a visit to KSCA office, with the state government having ordered a CID probe into the stampede case. The stampede left 11 people dead and several others injured. Communicating to KSCA on Friday night, both Shankar and Jairam wrote as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, 'Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, and though our role was very limited, but owing moral responsibility, we wish to state that last night we have tendered our resignation to our respective posts as secretary and treasurer of the KSCA.' The Bengaluru Police also filed a first information report (FIR) against the popular IPL franchise on Thursday. The police have said that RCB was not given permission to conduct the event at the stadium. RCB has been listed as the first accused in the FIR, along with DNA Entertainment, the franchise's event partners, and the KSCA, which is in control of the stadium. On Friday, the cops also confirmed the arrest of RCB's marketing and revenue head Nikhil Sosale, while acting on directives of newly appointed police commissioner SK Singh, who took over after his predecessor was removed by the chief minister Siddaramaiah after the incident. J-K: A month after Operation Sindoor, residents in Samba return to work; situation calm on border

Samba (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 7 (ANI): As a month has gone by since 'Operation Sindoor', residents in Samba expressed faith in the Indian Army and said that the situation was peaceful at present and people have returned to work. A resident in Samba said, 'We are living 2 km away from the border. We have faced severe losses, and parts of drone entered our kitchen. Our windows were shattered. Now there is peace. Earlier, we were extremely frightened. PM Modi has provided a lot of benefits. He has announced the formation of new border battalions for Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, there was continuous shelling. We will be extremely relieved once PM Modi provides us with bunkers.' He further said that they had full confidence in the Indian Army and all the drones were neutralised. 'Now the people have started working in the fields again. There is no fear,' he added. Another resident living 3 km away from the border said that the situation is now very peaceful. 'The Indian Army and BSF had destroyed the drones in the air. Now, development work is in progress. People have started working in fields,' he added. Another resident said that the terrorists' launch pad should also be dismantled in future. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that Pakistan 'saw its doomsday' on the night of May 6 during Operation Sindoor, a deep strike mission that he said left the Pakistan Army and terrorists stunned. Addressing a public gathering in J-K's Reasi, PM Modi said, 'Remember, exactly one month ago, on the night of May 6, Pakistan saw its doomsday. Now, whenever Pakistan hears the name of Operation Sindoor, it will remember its shameful defeat. The Pakistani Army and terrorists had never thought that India would attack terrorists hundreds of kilometres inside Pakistan in such a way.' He said Operation Sindoor demonstrated the strength of Aatmnirbhar Bharat and praised the armed forces for their trust in 'Make in India.' 'You have seen how Operation Sindoor has shown the power of Aatmnirbhar Bharat. Today, the world is discussing India's defence ecosystem. There is only one reason behind this. Our army's trust in Make in India. Every Indian has to repeat what the army has done,' he said. He also urged the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to actively participate in Mission Manufacturing, announced in this year's Budget. 'I want to ask the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to join this mission. Your ideas and skills will take India's economy and security to new heights,' he said. The Prime Minister also announced financial assistance for families affected by border shelling. He said houses fully damaged by cross-border shelling would receive Rs 2 lakh, while partially damaged houses would be given Rs 1 lakh. 'The suffering of more than 2,000 families affected by shelling is also our own suffering. Now, those houses which have suffered heavy damage will be given Rs 2 lakh, and those partially damaged will receive Rs 1 lakh more,' he said. (ANI)
