More sunshine, warmer temps Thursday in Minnesota amid air quality alert

CBS News4 days ago
Wildfire smoke will continue to spread into Minnesota on Thursday, with an air quality alert in effect until 11 p.m. Friday for most of the state.
Any storms left over from Wednesday night around the Twin Cities will continue to fade and exit as high pressure nudges eastward. This will clear the clouds for some sunshine Thursday afternoon, helping highs reach the mid-80s.
Aside from a few clouds, expect more sunshine Friday with highs a touch warmer in the upper 80s.
The weekend looks to remain fairly tame with models only indicating isolated pop-ups storms across northern Minnesota each afternoon. Temperatures and humidity continue to climb with highs both days near 90 degrees.
Looks like a slightly better chance for storms late Sunday with a little relief from the heat and humidity by mid-week.

Prayers Are Pouring In For Minnesota On Sunday

Prayers Are Pouring In For Minnesota On Sunday originally appeared on The Spun. Prayers are pouring in for the state of Minnesota on Sunday afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued multiple serious tornado warnings for the state of Minnesota on Sunday afternoon, as heavy storms have impacted the area. Major storms, including strong thunderstorms, serious wind and spotted tornadoes, are hitting the northern U.S. state throughout the day on Sunday. It looks dangerous. As a reminder, here's what to do when a tornado strikes: Stay Weather-Ready: Continue to listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay updated about tornado watches and warnings. At Your House: If you are in a tornado warning, go to your basement, safe room, or an interior room away from windows. Don't forget pets if time allows. At Your Workplace or School: Follow your tornado drill and proceed to your tornado shelter location quickly and calmly. Stay away from windows and do not go to large open rooms such as cafeterias, gymnasiums, or auditoriums. Outside: Seek shelter inside a sturdy building immediately if a tornado is approaching. Sheds and storage facilities are not safe. Neither is a mobile home or tent. If you have time, get to a safe building. In a vehicle: Being in a vehicle during a tornado is not safe. The best course of action is to drive to the closest shelter. If you are unable to make it to a safe shelter, either get down in your car and cover your head, or abandon your car and seek shelter in a low lying area such as a ditch or ravine. Our thoughts are with the friends and family members of everyone in Minnesota on Sunday. Looking to beat the heat in the Twin Cities? Here's a list of cooling centers around the metro

An excessive heat warning is in place across the Twin Cities metro Sunday as feels-like temperatures surpass 100 degrees. WCCO has issued a NEXT Weather Alert for Sunday due to the dangerous heat, as well as the risk for severe storms. For those looking for a place to stay cool, there are options. The following places have cooling centers open across the Twin Cities for free during business hours: For a complete list of cooling centers open in Hennepin County, click here. Minneapolis also has several free pools, beaches and splash pads to help people beat the heat. To see a map of all the cooling centers and beaches in Ramsey County, click here. To stay cool, experts encourage people to limit time in direct sunlight and drink plenty of water. If you're going to be outside in the heat, doctors encourage wearing loose, light clothing and seeking shade when you can. It's recommended that anyone working or exercising in the elements drink at least one cup of water for every 20 minutes. Older adults, young kids and anyone with underlying conditions are at greater risk from extreme heat. In Minnesota, the number of heat-related hospitalizations spikes at a feels-like temperature of only 86 degrees. Cramps, rapid pulse and dizziness are early signs to watch out for when it comes to heat-related illness. Adam Del Rosso and Aki Nace contributed to this report.
