Susim Mukul Datta: Fountain of youth who left a lasting imprint on HLL
This piece is not an elegy or an obituary. It is an intimate portrait of one of India's highly accomplished leaders.
As a young trainee in 1967, I was assigned to do a project in Hindustan Lever Limited's (HLL's) Bombay factory. Energetic manufacturing engineers assembled in the canteen at lunchtime, seemingly in a rush to get their share of carrom, bridge, or adda. I felt lonely as a 21-year-old, looking for someone of my age group and lowly rank. And I noticed a tranquil Susim Datta, whom I befriended.
'Hello, I am a trainee of 1967, which batch are you?' I enquired in my friendly best tone. 'Oh, hello, I am 1956,' he replied. 'What! How could a person ten years my senior look so young?'
That is a mystery I never uncovered over the next sixty years. Susim was a picture of the ever-youthful Dorian Gray — without the excesses of the character in Oscar Wilde's story!
He told me that he was a chemical engineer from Presidency College, and currently the development manager in the factory. Susim spoke of hydrogenation and saponification as though they were his mother tongue.
What about Bengali, I ventured. He hummed what seemed to me as soulful Rabindra Sangeet, perhaps the only such recital within the walls of the Mumbai factory managers' canteen!
As the years rolled on, he never came through as a backslapping, but instantly connecting person. I thought of him as a reserved, soft spoken, enviably knowledgeable technical geek. It seemed that he knew everything that was worth knowing, and what he did not know was not worth knowing. He did many clever things in the company and rose meteorically, all of which have been recounted in his obituaries. By 1980, he was rumoured to be a potential chairman.
In 1990, he became chairman. During his tenure as chairman of HLL, he acquired a reputation as a mergers and acquisitions magician, and as a leader who pushed for aggressive goals in a seemingly non-aggressive manner through his mantra: quality-innovation-collaboration-acquisitions. He presided over one of the longest company general body meetings when he piloted the HLL meeting for the acquisition of Tata Oil Mills Co. He was a picture of patience.
This is an intimate portrait and not an obituary. I close with a reference to the only film in which Susim has acted. It was titled Four Men of India, directed by Caryl Doncaster and produced for Unilever and Hindustan Lever by James Carr. BBC showed this film among many others in a Trade Test for Colour Films. In this film, a Sikh salesman is depicted using his sales van to sell soaps in the Himalayas.
A Rajasthani man is shown as a migrant to the city to work in a soap factory (I recognised the Jones Stamping Machine at Bombay factory).
A supervisor at the factory is shown to have come from Kerala. Finally, an upcoming young engineer from the east is shown in the Calcutta factory, guiding a production supervisor and his team on a dalda packing line. The young engineer was a 25-year-old Susim!
If you watch that film now, you will see that the young Susim greatly resembles the retiring chairman thirty-five years later. That is why, to me, Susim has not passed away, rather he is the ever-youthful leader to all who knew him. He is remembered as one of the top corporate leaders of India who will always occupy an elite spot.

He added that students belonging to Buddhist, Sikh, Parsi, Christian, Muslim and Jain communities are eligible under the minority category and can take advantage of the programme.

Fauja Singh: Granddad who didn't ‘feel like dying'
Written by Khushwant Singh I always knew I'd be asked to write Fauja Singh's obituary one day, but I believed that day was still far away. Never did I imagine that a man who single-handedly redefined the meaning of living with dignity would meet such a tragic end on the same highway that had once claimed one of his sons' lives. The highway had been a backdrop to his life's most crucial experiences: It had set in motion his running career as he sought solace after his son's death. It became the place where his own was taken away, prematurely, as it feels. True to his name — Fauja, meaning 'army' and Singh, meaning 'lion'– Fauja Singh was an extraordinary man. I often told people he was the romanticised prototype of a Sikh and a peasant, embodying sabr (patience), courage, wit, resilience, and above all, decency. He embodied the original meaning of the word Sikh: A seeker. On this foundation, he built his kirdar (character), becoming a global symbol of human resilience and inspiration, especially when he completed the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2011 at the age of 100. The first time I met him was in 2005 in the UK, while I was writing Sikhs Unlimited: A Travelogue from Delhi to Los Angeles via London (Rupa & Co.), a book that chronicled the lives of some extraordinary Sikhs in the UK and the US. Fauja had shot into the limelight after the sportswear company Adidas signed him for their 'Running 2004' campaign, and his billboards appeared all over the UK. It's a separate story altogether that Fauja could never quite pronounce the brand name and always referred to it as 'kompany'. It was only after they signed him that Adidas realised how difficult it was to get him to say 'Adidas' correctly for the advertisement. Nor did they know that Fauja told me he preferred the 'sher waley jutey (the pair with the feline on them)' over 'kompany waley jutey'. He had asked me to meet him at a gurdwara in Seven Kings, Ilford. He had moved in with his eldest son after the tragic death of his middle son. What followed was a friendship that lasted two decades. He looked frail at that first meeting, very unlike a marathon runner. He was wearing a blue turban, had a flowing beard, and was dressed in a blue suit. However, the giveaways were the matching tie, which had marathon runners printed on it, and the sports shoes, which had 'Fauja' and 'Singh' inscribed on them. After introducing me to some fellow devotees as 'Likhari India toe aaya (the writer who has come from India)', he told me that he could either sleep or walk, and the interview would have to be done while walking. 'We will walk eight to 10 miles, I have to pick up my shoes from the cobbler, and then we'll have tea at the Singh Sabha Gurdwara,' he said. 'Yes, Babaji,' I replied, and off we went. About a kilometre into the interview, I realised I would need to find someone else to provide accurate information. For Fauja, everything had happened paroo, meaning 'some time back'. Thank God for Harmander Singh, his coach, from whom I eventually got the necessary details. Harmander told me how he had to virtually get Fauja out of his suit and into a vest and track pants to make him running ready. Once set, though, there was no looking back. London, New York, Toronto, Nairobi, Lahore, name a city, he conquered them all. Mumbai, twice, where he was the star attraction both times. Like Adidas, he could never pronounce Mumbai and called it Bumba. His short biography in Sikhs Unlimited soon turned into a full-fledged book. Titled Turbaned Tornado: The Oldest Marathon Runner Fauja Singh, it was released at the House of Lords, London, in July 2011. During the 100-odd kilometres I walked alongside him through the streets of London for both books, I was finally able to piece together his life. He was born in Bias Pind, in Jalandhar district, on April 1, 1911, to Mehr Singh and Bhago Kaur. Ironically, the legs on which he clocked endless miles of running were spindly, and his friends used to call him Danda. He was adopted by his aunt, Rai Kaur, and was nicknamed Gallari (talkative), a tag he carried till his last breath. Fauja Singh could entertain you endlessly with his stories and wit, albeit frequently punctuated with the choicest of Punjabi expletives. I can hear his favourite one as I write this. But Fauja was not all talk. He was an indefatigable farmer. Village folklore has it that the oxen would get tired, but Fauja wouldn't. This relentless work ethic eventually found expression on the track. Yet, what many don't know is how deeply charitable Fauja was. He donated his entire endorsement fee from Adidas to a UK-based charity called Bliss. During the 2016 Mumbai Marathon, Nestlé agreed with his request to send its endorsement money directly to the Pingalwara Trust in Amritsar. During a book tour to Australia in 2013, he was invited by many gurdwaras and showered with dollars. He would simply pick up the dollars and put them in the golak, and I would watch in awe, admiring the man that he was. Fauja was sharp and observant. At the celebrity chef cookout, part of the Mumbai Marathon carnival, he was paired with Gul Panag. They had to cook pasta. When Gul was trying to explain what pasta was, he surprised her by asking, 'Bal waala (fusilli) je, ke nali waala (penne)?' The last time I met him was in December 2024 at his home in Bias Pind, from where I had started the fourth day of my People's Walk Against Drugs, and he had walked half a kilometre in solidarity. But even before that, I had asked him, 'Do you fear death?' 'Yes,' he admitted. 'Hunn tey mela laggya, mehmaan 'Granddad, Granddad' karde ne. Maran da ji nahi karda (Now that it feels like a fair, with everyone calling me Granddad. I don't feel like dying),' he said in chaste Punjabi. Bye, Granddad. And as one of your admirers wrote on social media, at 114, you are still not out. Life cheated on you. From ‘black' to blessed: 25 yrs of cleaning of Kali Bein, a global model for river revival
On July 16, 2000, environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal, now a Rajya Sabha member and a Padma Shri awardee, stepped into a sludge-filled dying rivulet in Punjab, accompanied by a handful of volunteers — it was the beginning of a mission that completed 25 years on Wednesday. The mission mobilised lakhs of citizens and drew attention from national and global leaders, eventually transforming the toxic stream into a clean water body revered as a sacred site. Though the journey was not easy, the Kali Bein movement changed the narrative around the river restoration, and its success — driven by volunteerism, spiritual motivation and grassroots engineering — inspired governments beyond Punjab. And today, it stands as a global model for river revival. The rivulet Kali Bein — literally 'Black Rivulet' — a 165-km-long tributary of the Beas, originates in Dhanoa village near the Mukerian Hydel Project in Hoshiarpur district and flows through Kapurthala before merging with the Sutlej at Harike Pattan. So filthy was the stream that people began calling it 'Kali' (black) Bein, but for Sikhs, it was never just a water body; it was the sacred site where Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru and the founder of Sikhism, attained enlightenment. For Seechewal and his growing team of volunteers, it became a mission that combined spiritual reverence with ecological urgency. What turned the rivulet 'black'? For decades, the Kali Bein served as an open drain for over 80 villages, small towns and industrial units based in Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Jalandhar. A major drain, Kala Sanghia, carrying industrial effluent, also emptied into it. Choked by weeds, garbage and untreated sewage, black water replaced fresh flow. Oxygen levels plummeted, and biodiversity vanished. Now, 25 years later, only a few villages still discharge untreated water into the rivulet in the absence of sewer treatment plants. Six treatment plants have been established, primarily in towns, while in several villages, a pond system has been developed in such a way that sewage is treated and water is used for irrigation. A community-led revolution On July 16, 2000, Seechewal and a few volunteers began 'kar sewa' (selfless service). Without any government funding, they cleared weeds, desilted the riverbed, constructed ghats, raised awareness and revived the water flow. Encouraged by public and presidential support, the Punjab government launched a plan to stop untreated sewage from entering the Bein. It identified 73 villages (53 in Kapurthala, 18 in Hoshiarpur, and two in Jalandhar) for intervention. Each village was to build a pond to collect and treat sewage before using it for irrigation. National and global recognition By 2004, efforts gained national recognition when President A P J Abdul Kalam praised the project in a public address and visited the site in 2006. In 2008, TIME magazine listed Seechewal among the world's top 30 environmental heroes. International platforms, including the Copenhagen Climate Summit and the Windsor Castle Interfaith Conference, invited him as a speaker. In May 2004, President Kalam included the Kali Bein among India's top nine achievements. He visited the Bein multiple times between 2006 and 2008 and spoke about it during over 2,000 national and international lectures. In 2015, then Union water resources minister Uma Bharti called the Bein a 'Guru Asthan' for the Ganga Mission. The Modi government adopted its model for the Namami Gange project. Around 500 village panchayat representatives from Ganga basin states were sent to study the Seechewal Model. Even the Delhi government announced plans to replicate it for cleaning the Yamuna. In 2017, Seechewal was awarded with Padma Shri for his work. When CM Mann drank its water On July 17, 2022, on the 22nd anniversary of the Kali Bein cleaning mission, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann drank a glass of water directly from the rivulet to showcase its purity. Two days later, he was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Delhi, sparking criticism and public concern. Why did the chief minister drink water from the rivulet that still received untreated sewage? The act was meant to symbolise faith in the movement, but it also exposed the reality — a rivulet spiritually clean, but environmentally vulnerable. Project status & road ahead Seechewal said, 'Now, in a majority of villages, ponds have been dug and pipes have been laid to carry household discharge to ponds, where it is cleaned and then used in the fields. However, in a few villages, ponds are encroached upon, and pipes have not been connected. The treatment plants in towns like Kapurthala and Sultanpur Lodhi function, but at times, they discharge untreated water directly into the Bein. We raise these issues whenever required.' Several traditional tree species have been planted on the banks. The water is now so clean that water games like boat races are held annually. Ghats and seating areas have been constructed for visitors. Local Bodies Department officials admit, 'If the government wanted, it could have completely stopped the discharge of filthy water by simply ensuring treatment plants run properly.' The Sewerage Board, however, cites the lack of funds to operate plants. Fish die every few years due to low oxygen levels in the polluted water, especially during the summer. River's revival and lifelong commitment 'The Kali Bein's journey is far from over. Although it flows cleaner, restoring full ecological balance requires unwavering political commitment, operational funding and local participation,' Seechewal said. 'Cleaning is a never-ending process, and it's now a part of our lives. All-natural flora and fauna have returned to the Bein, and one can now see clear water most of its course.' What began with one man and a prayer has turned into a movement of faith, resilience and environmental justice. From black waters to a blessed flow, the Kali Bein's revival stands as a reminder: every river can be reborn.
