Mamelodi spaza shop owner murdered, police investigation underway
Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old spaza shop owner in Mamelodi East, Tshwane, following an altercation that occurred yesterday morning.
Pretoria Rekord reports that, according to police, the deceased is believed to be an Ethiopian national.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk says officers from the Mamelodi East Police Station were dispatched to the scene around 08:00 yesterday after receiving reports of a shooting.
'Preliminary investigations indicate that an altercation between the suspect and the victim took place earlier that morning, around 06:00, outside the victim's spaza shop,' he says.
Van Dyk adds that the victim was reportedly sitting inside his white Toyota Corolla at the time of the dispute.
'During the argument, the suspect allegedly drew a firearm and fired several shots through the windscreen of the vehicle, striking the victim multiple times.'
The suspect then fled the scene.
Van Dyk says family members were informed shortly after the shooting and rushed to the scene.
'They transported the injured man to hospital using the same vehicle he had been shot in,' he adds.
However, while en route, the vehicle was stopped by Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department officers, who discovered the victim in the back seat.
'When the officers inspected the vehicle, the victim had already succumbed to his injuries.'
Crime scene experts were called to the location to process the area and gather forensic evidence, which will aid detectives in tracking down the perpetrator.
'A case of murder has been opened, and we are actively following all available leads in an effort to trace and apprehend the suspect.'

Warning: 6 armed and dangerous CIT robbers at large in Pretoria
A manhunt is underway in Pretoria after six heavily armed suspects escaped following a violent cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery. Pretoria Rekord reports that police are urging the public to remain alert as officers intensify efforts to track down the dangerous fugitives, who are considered armed and volatile. According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, police arrested five suspects, aged between 35 and 50, soon after they allegedly committed a CIT robbery in Ekangala, Tshwane, yesterday. 'Police recovered one of the getaway cars and more than 100 rounds of ammunition. Police are on the lookout for more than six other suspects.' He says it is reported that the suspects used a BMW to ram the CIT van. 'The suspects then bombed the van and took [an] undisclosed amount of cash before speeding off in different cars. The police from Gauteng Highway Patrol responded swiftly and spotted two of the getaway cars, a silver Mercedes-Benz and silver Mazda CX3.' Masondo says a high-speed chase ensued. 'While on the N12 highway, the suspects started shooting at the police and [the] police returned fire. One of the getaway cars was chased until the driver lost control and the suspects jumped out of the car and ran into the mielie field while shooting at the police.' Police were joined by private security officers, and the search continued until five suspects were arrested. 'Inside the getaway car, police found scores of ammunition.' He says a preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects are out on bail after committing CIT robberies in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo. 'The search is underway for the suspects who escaped. Those who were arrested are expected to appear [in court] on Monday, facing charges that include CIT robbery, attempted murder and possession of ammunition.' 2 Gauteng law enforcement officers nabbed in alleged kidnapping and deportation scam
Two law enforcement officials were arrested yesterday as part of a collaborative effort to combat crime. Pretoria Rekord reports that the operations saw Gauteng Police Organised Crime Investigations and Home Affairs nab the duo after they allegedly kidnapped a woman and attempted to force her to flee the country. The two suspects were arrested on charges of kidnapping, malicious damage to property and theft. According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, a Gauteng Traffic Police member was arrested in Johannesburg, while an immigration officer was arrested in Tshwane. 'It is alleged that on February 27, the suspects went to the house of the victim, a foreign national, and demanded to see the documents that qualify her to be in the country,' says Masondo. He says that after producing the documents, the suspects informed the victim they were taking her to the Department of Home Affairs for verification of the documents. 'She was instead taken to Pretoria Central Police Station and detained for contravening the Immigration Act [13 of 2002].' Masondo says it was further reported that the suspects came the following day and took the victim to the airport, where they purchased a plane ticket and instructed her to leave the country as she was being deported to her home country. 'While at the airport, she reported the matter to the immigration officers and the case was opened at the local police station and later transferred to Provincial Head Office Organised Crime Investigations,' Masondo explains. He says a thorough investigation was conducted, and a warrant of arrest was issued for the suspects. Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner responsible for crime detection, Major General Mbuso Khumalo, believes there might be other foreign nationals who may have fallen victim to this criminality. He has made a call to any victims who have experienced this crime to report the matter to the nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111. 4 people shot, 3 dead in Bushbuckridge
Four people were shot in separate incidents in Bushbuckridge between Sunday and Monday. Mpumalanga News reports that, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the police received information about an Ethiopian national who had been shot on the R536 near Cork Trust in the Calcutta policing area yesterday. 'Upon their arrival, the officers found the victim seated behind the steering wheel of a blue VW Caravelle Combi. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest, and was declared dead on the scene by emergency medical services [EMS],' she says. Ndubane says it is alleged that the victim was en route to visit a friend in Somerset Trust when he was ambushed by people driving in a white Toyota bakkie. 'The suspects reportedly opened fire while the vehicle was in motion. Some spent cartridges were recovered at the scene. The victim's vehicle [was] riddled [with bullets],' Ndubane says. In another incident on Sunday, the police responded to a shooting at a tavern in Oakley near Mkhuhlu in the Calcutta policing area at about 00:30. They found a silver-grey VW Polo TSI parked at the entrance of the tavern with bullet holes and the windows shattered. 'The driver had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead by EMS on the scene,' Ndubane says. She says there was a woman inside the car, but she only sustained some injuries. This victim was taken to hospital for treatment. Some spent cartridges were recovered at the scene. The motive for the shooting is unknown, and no arrests have been made yet. Earlier that same evening, the SAPS responded to another shooting incident at a tavern in Marite Trust. The officers discovered the body of a man with two gunshot wounds. EMS declared him dead on the scene. No arrests have been made, and investigations continue. The SAPS urge anyone with information that may assist in these investigations to contact Lieutenant Colonel Skhumbuzo Ceko on 082 992 9902.
