DMK meet at Madurai passes key resolutions, calls for national recognition of Karunanidhi‘s legacy
Chennai: At a high-profile General Council meeting held in Madurai, the DMK passed a series of significant resolutions reaffirming its ideological commitments, praising the government's performance, and issuing sharp criticisms of the BJP-led Central government.
The meeting took place on Saturday. One notable resolution passed is to celebrate June 3 -- the birth anniversary of late party patriarch and five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi -- as Classical Language Day across India.
The party said the move would honour Kalaignar's pivotal role in securing classical status for Tamil.
The meeting also heaped praise on DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for his successive electoral victories, describing him as a 'continuous victory hero with the overwhelming support of the people.'
The council lauded the 'Dravidian Model' of governance for its pioneering work in uplifting women and marginalised communities, including farmers, weavers, and fishermen.
The DMK reiterated its commitment to disseminate the achievements of its government to every household and passed a resolution supporting Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, calling him the 'future hope of Tamil Nadu.'
In a political tone, the council passed resolutions condemning the BJP-led Union government on several counts. These included criticism for not lifting restrictions on jewel loans, delaying the release of educational and development funds, failing to allocate adequate resources for Tamil Nadu's railway projects, and allegedly politicising the Keeladi archaeological site.
A specific resolution urged the Reserve Bank of India to immediately remove the cap on jewel loans, calling it a burden on the poor and working-class families.
Another resolution condemned what the party described as the imposition of Hindi, urging the Centre to stop 'tampering with the linguistic sentiments of Tamils.'
The party also expressed appreciation for the state government's consistent efforts to honour leaders who have brought pride to the Tamil identity and reiterated its mission to uphold social justice, federalism, and linguistic equality.
The Madurai meeting marks a critical moment ahead of the next political season, with the DMK positioning itself as both a regional powerhouse and a national voice for federal rights and cultural identity.

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has announced that Haasan's movie – slated to be released on June 5 – will be boycotted unless the actor issues a public apology. Anticipating disruption in the release of his film, the actor-politician approached the court seeking urgent intervention for the smooth release of the film and adequate security at theatres planning to show it. Senior advocate Dhyan Chinnappa, appearing for Haasan, said the release of the movie can't be stopped. In response, the court told the lawyer if Haasan had apologised for the remark. "You may be Kamala Hassan or anybody, you cannot hurt the sentiments of the masses," it observed. "On what basis have you made the statement? Are you a historian, linguist? On what basis did you speak?" the court added.

Israel says 3 soldiers killed in Gaza in deadliest attack on its forces since truce ended in March
The Israeli military said Tuesday that three of its soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip, in what appeared to be the deadliest attack on Israel's forces since it ended a ceasefire with Hamas in March. The military said the three soldiers, all in their early 20s, fell during combat in northern Gaza on Monday, without providing details. Israeli media reported that they were killed in an explosion in the Jabaliya area. Israel ended the ceasefire in March after Hamas refused to change the agreement to release more hostages sooner. Israeli strikes have killed thousands of Palestinians since then, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 people hostages in the Oct 7, 2023, attack into Israel that ignited the war. They are still holding 58 hostages, a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. Israel's military campaign has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants. Israel says it has killed around 20,000 militants, without providing evidence. Around 860 Israeli soldiers have been killed since the Oct 7 attack, including more than 400 during the fighting inside Gaza.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has warned Tamil Nadu actor-politician Kamal Haasan against misusing his right to free speech to hurt people's sentiments, and called on him to withdraw the remark - that the Kannada language was "born out of Tamil" - at the centre of a fierce row. "You are not an ordinary man," the court said of the 70-year-old superstar, who is expected to become a Rajya Sabha MP this month with support from Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK. "You have a right to speech... but not to hurt sentiments. The fundamental right of (free) speech and expression cannot be given to an extent that it hurts the sentiments of the masses. We are leaving this to you now... apologise if you have hurt anyone," the court said, referring also to potential revenue from Kamal Haasan's new film, 'Thug Life', which premieres Thursday. "In this case you made a statement. Withdraw that statement... that is all. Crores can be earned from Karnataka... but if you don't need the people (of Kannada) then leave the revenue..." "But we will not permit anyone to take public sentiments for a ride... when mistakes happen you should say, 'It is in this context I spoke (but) if it has hurt anyone I apologise'," the court said.
