Kin of AI-171 crash ground victims hire US law firm
Families of 10 people killed on the ground in the Air India Flight AI-171 crash have hired Beasley Allen, the prominent US aviation law firm that secured billions from Boeing over the 737 MAX disasters, as the firm expands its representation of those affected by the tragedy in Ahmedabad on June 12. Kin of AI-171 crash ground victims hire US law firm The firm, led by aviation attorney D Michael Andrews, is exploring product liability claims against Boeing in US federal courts and Montreal Convention claims against Air India in UK courts, though no lawsuits have been filed yet. Andrews travelled to India in August to meet families across Gujarat and Mumbai, signing his 10th ground victim family on August 11. Among those killed was Maheshbhai Kalavadia, a Gujarati film producer from Naroda who had attended a meeting at Law Garden before calling his wife at 1:15 pm to say he was heading home. His remains were found 700 metres from the crash site and identified through DNA matching. 'These were innocent people who had nothing to do with the flight - they weren't even passengers,' said a relative who met Andrews. 'They were just going about their normal day when this tragedy struck.' The Boeing 737 MAX cases that established Beasley Allen's reputation involved crashes that killed 346 people between 2018 and 2019. Boeing ultimately paid $2.5 billion under a 2021 deferred prosecution agreement and settled more than 90% of claims, acknowledging liability for crashes caused by the faulty Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) it built into the jets. Andrews has taken on the case of victims killed in the medical college hostel where the plane crashed, including two people in the food preparation area and medical students in the mess hall, and also represents the family of a husband and wife killed while on a scooter for document verification. The firm is pursuing a water leak theory, focusing on the Boeing 787-8's electrical and equipment bay beneath the cockpit that houses flight computers including FADEC and TCMA systems capable of autonomous aircraft control. 'Above that and in those same areas, there are water lines and couplings that are known to have leaked on prior 787-8 aircraft,' Andrews explained, referencing Boeing service bulletins about coupling leaks that can allow water into computer equipment. The firm is filing Right to Information requests in India and Freedom of Information Act requests in the US to obtain complete flight data recorder information for independent expert analysis, Andrews told HT. Andrews met the sole survivor Ramesh and other families during his India visit, saying conversations were brief and private. He plans to file cases separately for each victim but has no fixed timetable pending data collection.

India should not succumb: Amitabh Kant urges government to resist Trump tariffs
Amitabh Kant urges government to have patience in negotiating tariffs with US (Photo: PTI) Amitabh Kant advises against immediate retaliatory tariffs on US He urges patience and prolonged negotiations with US India benefits from US firms and freedom to use data Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has asked the government not to succumb to the tariff pressure imposed by US President Donald Trump and take the path of negotiation before imposing any retaliatory tariffs on the US. "India needs not succumb. We should hold on and not impose retaliatory tariffs right now as we still have 20 days to negotiate," he said. Adding that patience is the virtue in negotiations, he said, "We should engage in extensive backroom negotiations. But over a long period of time. We purchase Boeing planes, and several global digital companies based in the United States operate in India. We give them the freedom to use our data. All these are huge advantages for India," he said. Talking about importing goods from China, he said that Chinese should be offered joint ventures with Indian companies on a minority stake and manufacture in India. "Instead of importing from China, we should get the Chinese to do joint ventures with Indian companies on a minority stake and do manufacturing in India and that will enable India to do both input manufacturing and component manufacturing and accelerate the process of make in India and accelerate the process of manufacturing in India and that is a long-term answer to economic growth," said Kant. "We need to grow at an eight to nine per cent per annum rate year after year and instead of importing, we need to do manufacturing with China in India, which will create jobs in India," he added. The US President has announced the imposition of a 25 per cent tariff along with a 25 per cent penalty on select imports from India for continuing to buy Russian oil. According to Trump, oil imports from Russia are helping it fund its ongoing war with Ukraine. Trade experts have warned that it could trigger retaliatory measures from New Delhi and strain the strategic partnership between the two nations. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump are scheduled to meet in Alaska. Both the leaders will discuss a solution on the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war. The US President, who has been trying to mediate a ceasefire between the warring nations, warned of "severe consequences" if Moscow does not agree to a peace deal. Trump said that the primary objective of the talks was to broker a peace deal to end the conflict, which has been ongoing for over three years. He described the summit as a "feel-out meeting" to gauge the Russian leader's willingness to pursue a ceasefire. He had previously suggested that a peace agreement could involve "some swapping of territories." This idea has been met with resistance from Ukraine, which has stated it cannot violate its constitution on territorial issues. On the other hand, Ukraine President Zelenskyy has affirmed that there will be no peace deal without Kyiv's involvement in the talks and emphasised that the country will not cede any territory to Russia. In 12 months, Etihad Airways transported 20.3 million passengers, driven by fleet growth to 111 aircraft and 81 destinations/Representative Image Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has achieved a major operational milestone, carrying over 20 million passengers in a 12-month span for the first time. The airline also posted strong growth in July 2025, supported by an expanding fleet and a broader destination network. Strong monthly and year-to-date growth Etihad Airways recorded a significant rise in passenger traffic in July 2025, flying 2.0 million passengers, a 19% increase from the 1.7 million carried during the same month in 2024. The airline's passenger load factor—a key metric indicating how efficiently an airline fills available seats—climbed to 90%, up one percentage point from 89% in July 2024. Over the first seven months of 2025, Etihad has transported 12.2 million passengers, reflecting a 17% year-on-year increase from the 10.4 million carried during the same period in 2024. The average load factor for the year so far has risen to 88%, compared to 86% in the equivalent period last year. These figures underscore steady and sustained demand across the airline's global network, contributing to its sharp rise in year-on-year performance. Milestone achievement: 12-month passenger record The airline's rolling 12-month passenger total has reached 20.3 million, crossing the 20 million mark for the first time in its history. He noted the record July figures and emphasized the trust customers continue to place in the carrier's network and service offerings. Fleet growth and new aircraft deliveries Etihad's operating fleet now consists of 111 aircraft, up from 94 in July 2024. This includes aircraft under short-term ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) leases, and also freighter planes. In July 2025 alone, the airline added five new aircraft, marking it as a record acquisition month. The additions included: 2 Boeing 787s 1 Airbus A350-1000 1 Airbus A320 1 Airbus A321LR — the airline's first of this variant The induction of the A321LR is a significant step in Etihad's fleet strategy, expanding range and efficiency in medium-haul operations. These new aircraft support the airline's ongoing effort to enhance capacity and modernize its fleet while maintaining operational efficiency. Network expansion and destination growth Etihad has also continued to expand its global reach. As of July 2025, the airline now operates flights to 81 passenger destinations, up from 76 a year ago. The additional five destinations are a result of Etihad's active network development strategy, which aligns with its growing fleet size and market demand. This increase in destination count supports the overall upward trend in passenger numbers, offering more travel options across key markets in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and beyond.
