Both NCP factions to mark 26th anniversary in Pune

MUMBAI: When the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) turns 26 on June 10, its two rival factions will mark the occasion with two contrasting events – one a show of strength, the other a low-key celebration.
Both parties – the NCP led by Ajit Pawar and the NCP (SP) led by his uncle, Sharad Pawar – have chosen Pune as the venue. Most importantly, leaders as well as the rank and file from both factions are hoping to get clarity on whether the two parties will merge, a subject that has fuelled much speculation lately.
Ajit Pawar has booked a part of the Balewadi sports complex, where seating arrangements will be made for 15,000 office-bearers. 'It should be seen as a show of strength of the party against the backdrop of the local body elections scheduled in the next few months,' said a senior NCP leader.
He said they were expecting 15,000 to 20,000 delegates from across the state. 'The celebrations will start in the morning and conclude with Ajit Pawar's speech,' he said. 'Pune is a central place for people coming from Western Maharashtra, the Konkan, Marathwada and North Maharashtra. Only those coming from Vidarbha will find it inconvenient.'
The two NCPs have been at daggers drawn ever since Ajit Pawar walked out of the undivided NCP with 40 MLAs in July 2023, to join the BJP-led Mahayuti government in the state. He was rewarded with the post of deputy chief minister.
During the local body elections, the two factions will fight a pitched battle for control over Western Maharashtra, a stronghold of the NCP for decades. In the state assembly elections, Ajit Pawar emerged as the stronger of the two Pawars in the region.
For the anniversary celebrations, Sharad Pawar has booked Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, an auditorium with a capacity of around 1,000. 'Pawar saheb will guide all of us by addressing the gathering,' said Ankush Kakade, spokesperson of the NCP (SP).
NCP (SP) leaders said they are anxious to get clarity on whether the two NCP factions will reconcile their differences and reunite. 'The speculation has created confusion among the cadre. We all are hoping the party leadership will clear the air on the anniversary, and guide us on how to plan our poll strategy,' said a senior party functionary.
Last year, on the undivided NCP's silver jubilee, the Ajit Pawar-led faction celebrated the occasion at Shanmukhananda Hall in Mumbai, while the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) celebrated it in Ahmednagar.

The Congress-led Karnataka government sacked as many as five senior police officials, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, and several other state government officials. In the aftermath of the deadly stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations, the Congress-led Karnataka government sacked as many as five senior police officials, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, and several other state government officials. A stampede near the stadium during a special felicitation ceremony organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to honour the RCB players, following their maiden IPL trophy win after 18 years, resulted in 11 deaths and 47 injuries. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday announced the suspension of the Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru city, Dayananda, and four other senior police officials. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary, K Govindaraj, and Information Department head, Hemant Nimbalkar, have also been removed from their posts. Defending their suspension, the CM said that prima facie those who have not fulfilled their responsibility properly have been suspended. List Of Suspended Officials: B Dayananda – Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayananda, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1996 batch, was suspended for allegedly failing to properly plan and coordinate the RCB event's security, despite prior knowledge of the celebrations. His suspension order cited serious lapses in communication and crowd management. Shekhar H Tekkannavar – Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), tasked with managing law and order in the central division, was suspended for allegedly not implementing adequate safety protocols, leading to the overcrowding situation. C Balakrishna – Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cubbon Park), responsible for the area surrounding the stadium, was suspended following the identification of lapses in managing the crowd and ensuring public safety. A K Girish – The Circle Inspector of Cubbon Park Police Station was suspended for his alleged direct involvement in the on-ground management of the event, where his actions were deemed inadequate in preventing the stampede. K Govindaraj – He has been relieved from the post of political secretary to the Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah with immediate effect, as per a state government notification. 'The appointment of K Govindaraj as Political Secretary to the Chief Minister is hereby revoked with immediate effect. Accordingly, K Govindaraj is hereby relieved from the post of Political Secretary to the Chief Minister with immediate effect," an official notification said. Hemant Nimbalkar – The Karnataka government on Friday transferred Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Hemant Nimbalkar without a new posting for allegedly failing to coordinate with the police to manage the crowd outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Meanwhile, an FIR was registered on Thursday against the RCB franchise, event manager DNA Entertainment, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) management, and others. The case is now being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Subsequently, four individuals were arrested in connection with the stampede, including Nikhil Sosale, a top marketing official of the RCB. Among those arrested are key members of the event management firm DNA Entertainment Private Limited, including Sunil Mathew, the Vice President who oversees IPL events for the company, along with Kiran and Sumanth.

India and Germany discuss joint role in ensuring global peace and security

Berlin: The all-party Parliamentary delegation from India led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday held a productive interaction with Omid Nouripour, Vice-President of Bundestag, the German Parliament, deeply appreciating Germany's strong and unequivocal support for India's principled stand against terrorism. The delegates conveyed India's firm response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and briefed about Operation Sindoor, reiterating the country's zero tolerance for terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Later, the delegation also met Bundestag's Chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee Armin Laschet and other members and former ministers, including Ralph Brinkhaus and Hubertus Heil. The delegation conveyed India's unwavering stand for zero tolerance for terrorism and outlined its resolve to not give in to nuclear blackmail. The leaders noted growing momentum in strategic partnership between India-Germany and joint role in ensuring global peace and security. Following the conclusion of a productive and impactful visit to Belgium, the delegation had arrived in Germany late Thursday for the final leg of their engagements in Western Europe. The delegation is a part of the Indian government's ongoing diplomatic outreach under Operation Sindoor and its "unwavering adherence" to a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. During their stay in Germany, the delegation will also be interacting with representatives from various think tanks and the Indian community in the country. Earlier, India's Ambassador to Germany, Ajit Gupte, received the Indian delegation on their arrival in Berlin and briefed them about India-Germany relations, with a focus on expanding strategic partnerships and growing cooperation across several sectors.
