Howard Schultz says he 'did a cartwheel' when Starbucks CEO Niccol coined 'back to Starbucks' strategy

CNBCa day ago

LAS VEGAS, NEV. — Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said Wednesday that he "did a cartwheel" in his living room when current chief executive Brian Niccol first coined his "back to Starbucks" strategy.
The enthusiasm from the 71-year-old Starbucks chairman emeritus is a key stamp of approval for Niccol as he tries to lift the company's slumping sales and restore the chain's culture.
Schultz, who grew Starbucks from a small chain into a global coffee giant, made a surprise appearance at the company's Leadership Experience in Las Vegas and cosigned Niccol's plans. The three-day event has gathered more than 14,000 North American store leaders to hear from Starbucks management as the company embarks on a turnaround.
Niccol took the reins in September, joining the company after the board ousted Laxman Narasimhan, Schultz's handpicked successor.
Schultz had returned in 2022 for his third stint as chief executive, but it was only an interim role. He previously told CNBC that he has no plans to come back again. Schultz no longer holds a formal role within the company, although CNBC has previously reported that he's forever entitled to attend board meetings unless barred by the company's directors.
During Niccol's first week on the job, he outlined plans for the comeback in an open letter, making the commitment to get "back to Starbucks." More details on how the chain planned to return to its roots followed in the ensuing months, from bringing back seating inside cafes to writing personalized messages on cups. Under Niccol's leadership, the company's marketing has shifted to focus on its coffee, rather than discounts and promotions.
When Starbucks announced Narasimhan's firing and Niccol's hiring, Schultz issued a statement of support, saying that the then-Chipotle CEO was the leader that the company needs. However, the Leadership Experience marks the first time that Niccol and Schultz have appeared publicly together.
During Narasimhan's short tenure as CEO, Schultz did not mince words when the company's performance fell short of his expectations. After a dismal quarterly earnings report, he weighed in publicly on LinkedIn, saying the company needs to improve its mobile order and pay experience and overhaul how it creates new drinks to focus on premium items that set it apart.
But Schultz said Starbucks' problems went further than just operational issues and lackluster beverages and food.
"The culture was not understood. The culture wasn't valued. The culture wasn't being upheld," he said on Wednesday.

Scale AI plans to promote strategy chief Droege to CEO as founder Wang heads for Meta

Scale AI plans to promote Chief Strategy Officer Jason Droege to serve as its new CEO, with founder Alexandr Wang heading to Meta as part of a multibillion-dollar deal with the company, CNBC has confirmed. Meta is finalizing a $14 billion investment into artificial intelligence startup Scale AI, CNBC reported earlier this week. Wang will help lead a new AI research lab at Meta and will be joined by some of his colleagues. The New York Times was first to report about the new AI lab. Bloomberg first reported that Droege was picked to be the new CEO. CNBC confirmed Scale AI's plans with a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because of confidentiality. Scale AI and Droege didn't respond to CNBC's requests for comment. Droege joined Scale AI in August of 2024, according to his LinkedIn profile. Prior to his role at the startup, he served as a venture partner at Benchmark and a vice president at Uber. Founded in 2016, Scale AI has achieved a high profile in the industry by helping major tech companies like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft prepare data they use to train cutting-edge AI models. Meta has been pouring billions of dollars into AI, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been frustrated with its progress. Zuckerberg will be counting on Wang to better execute Meta's AI ambitions following the tepid reception of the company's latest Llama AI models. Meta will take a 49% stake in Scale AI with its investment, The Information reported.

Woman's Starbucks Bill Surprise Has Over A Million People Watching In Disbelief

Everything from essentials to food is expensive right now. It has gotten so bad that people are calling it a crisis, and many have stopped buying everyday items altogether. People aren't getting haircuts, they've stopped going out to eat, buying living this too, you get it. So, it's no surprise over a million people have related to this viral video of popular TikToker Avery Katherine Wood when the price of her recent Starbucks order left her speechless. In the video, Avery records herself in the drive-thru. She orders a grilled cheese and a venti Strawberry Acai Refresher blended with lemonade. She also adds popping boba. And when the drive-thru worker tells her the total is $15.43, she is so speechless, she reacts with a mixture of facial expressions: And finally musters up all she can think: "OH MY GOSH..." "FIFTEEN DOLLARS??????" she says, repeating the amount back to herself. Trying to make sense of it, she adds, "Popping boba had to be like, added $2.50." Still in shock, she repeats, "WHAT? OH MY GOSH!!!" She then recalls the cost of her recent order from Chicken Salad Chick where she said she spent $13 on a drink, a cookie, broccoli salad, and "a big ass sandwich." "And I just dropped $15 on a grilled cheese and a Starbucks THE FUDGE," she concludes in her video, which has a lot of people talking about more than just her hilarious facial reactions. People immediately started trying to break down the price for her... Which still seemed to leave her in disbelief. But, sadly, many have already gotten accustomed to these high prices, so the shock factor is no longer there. In fact, things are so expensive in some places, the price of her order is actually considered reasonable in comparison. Either way, the prices are obviously tough to fork over. Despite people still trying to find alternative ways to save money at Starbucks, like using the mobile app, they say they always have to double-check the price ahead of time. To sum it up, it's just another example of how people are struggling to afford the same things in 2025 that they did in 2022. As someone who doesn't frequent Starbucks (shoutout to my 7-year-old Keurig that is still going strong!), I wondered what the price would be near where I live in Burbank, California. So, I downloaded the app and pretended to order as a pickup since I know delivery charges fees. I wasn't able to order the exact Strawberry Acai Refresher because they didn't have the popping boba, but I did select blended with raspberry pearls. The grilled cheese was sold out. The total for just the drink came to $7.50 before tax/tip, so I am assuming if I were to add a grilled cheese, it would easily be $15, likely higher. What state do you live in, and what was the recent price of something that shocked you so much it stopped you in your tracks?
