Different dinosaur species may have really traveled together like in the movies

A newly discovered trove of fossilized footprints provides what may be the first evidence of prehistoric diversity in dinosaur herds, though not everyone is convinced. Across the African savanna, zebras and wildebeests travel together in massive herds often peppered with impalas and gazelles. The larger the herd, the safer its members are from predators like lions, hyenas and African wild dogs.
Scientists have wondered whether dinosaurs similarly engaged in mixed-species herding behavior. Children's movies like ' The Land Before Time ' series and ' Dinosaur ' (2000) often depict motley crews of dinosaurs migrating together, like apatosaurs and triceratops or iguanodons and parasaurolophus (despite often living in different time periods). But evidence that different dinosaur species actually travelled with each other was lacking in the fossil record.
Now, paleontologists working in the badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta, Canada, have uncovered fossilized footprints they say provide the first evidence of different species of dinosaurs herding together—though not everyone is convinced. The finding was published Wednesday in PLOS One .
The 76-million-year-old footprints tell the story of a small group of horned dinosaurs, called ceratopsians, that may have formed a Lord of the Rings-esque traveling party with an armored ankylosaurid and, perhaps, a small two-legged theropod. And like Tolkien's famous fellowship, this band of travelers may have been stalked by fearsome foes: a pair of large carnivorous tyrannosaurs. In the summer of 2024, Brian Pickles , a paleontologist at the University of Reading in England and his colleague Phil Bell were searching for fossils in the park when they came across something strange sticking out of the ground.
'We'd gone out prospecting for bones and weren't having much luck,' says Pickles. But then Bell, a paleontologist from the University of New England in Australia, came across a raised rim of iron stone. 'He started poking around and realized that it was a dinosaur footprint.'
The 48 hours that followed the find were a whirlwind of frantic excavation and profound discoveries that culminated in what he calls 'a revolution in dinosaur paleoecology at Dinosaur Provincial Park.'
In a patch of land roughly the size of two parking spaces, the team was able to excavate over a dozen fossilized footprints. Unlike other dinosaur track sites where footprints often overlap, these tracks were evenly spaced and showed no signs of crowding. Based on their size, shape, and direction, the researchers concluded they were likely made by a mixed-species group of at least five dinosaurs walking together. The team also found the fossilized footprints of two large tyrannosaurs that may have been walking side-by-side near the herd. Were these apex predators working together to hunt? And was the herd formed as a way to defend against such predation? In the grasslands of Africa, lions will often follow mixed species herds of herbivores and work together to hunt them. Could these footprints have captured a similar situation unfolding?
'It's quite evocative to think of this situation as being similar to what we see on the African plains today,' says Pickles. 'We don't know the specific timing. The tyrannosaurs could have been there first.' 'Weak feet?'
Some researchers not involved in the work questioned the team's conclusions.
Anthony Romilio , a paleontologist at the University of Queensland in Australia, says that although some dinosaurs likely did form mixed-species herds, he disagrees with how the authors interpreted the footprints.
'As researchers, we're naturally drawn to the possibilities these fossils offer—but that excitement can sometimes lead to interpretive overreach,' Romilio says. In his view, the ceratopsian and ankylosaurid tracks look similar in shape, and he thinks they are more likely to be poorly preserved footprints of large-bodied hadrosaurs.
'That interpretation may not be as headline-grabbing, but it aligns better with what we know from both fossil footprints and trackways,' he says.
Christian Meyer, a paleontologist from the University of Basel in Switzerland, is also skeptical, and calls the findings "speculative."
"I find that the preservation of the tracks, including their taxonomic assignment, is on weak feet, as there are no complete trackways preserved that show also the walking pattern," he says. "Moreover, the interpretation of mixed herding is—given the facts—in my view a bit overstretched."
Since the excavation that sparked this new study, Pickles and his colleagues say they have found over ten additional dinosaur trackways. With this many trackways, Pickles says, figuring out whether some dinosaurs formed mixed-species herds is just the beginning.
'There's potentially a lot more going on there than we've been able to expose so far,' he says.

Fraudulent scientific research is now being produced and published on a large scale, with some unethical researchers colluding with unethical editors to attain the prestige that comes with publication, according to a new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Large groups of editors and authors appear to have cooperated in what it called "the tide of fraudulent science." Among their efforts, the researchers who conducted the study obtained about 47,000 retracted articles. They collected reports of the same image used in multiple publications. They compiled 33,000 papers of suspicious origin. Making use of the fact that editors' names are public at some science publishers, they looked at whether some editors handled disproportionate numbers of problematic scientific papers, ones that were later retracted or noted negatively by other scientists. At the journal PLOS One, they were able to link 30.2% of the retracted articles to 45 editors. Of these editors, 25 had their own papers retracted. The 45 editors represented 0.25% of the total number of editors at the journal. PLOS One did not respond to a request for comment. Researchers also found clusters of articles accepted in less than a month, often involving the same editors and authors. 'They found cases where people submitted papers and those papers got accepted extremely fast, and when you looked at the editors, they were just sending them to each other,' said Luís Amaral, a systems biologist at Northwestern University and senior author of the study. 'There are people who believe that there is widespread fraud,' said Reese Richardson, a postdoctoral researcher in the Amaral Lab at Northwestern and lead author of the study. 'What this paper does is give a method and a starting point and the data to show that this is actually happening, and that the current mechanisms are not equipped to stop it.' The study's findings confirm the suspicions of many researchers, including Elisabeth Bik, a microbiologist and independent scientific integrity consultant who has spent years identifying fraudulent research. In one case, she found 125 papers that reused parts of the same image. 'It was the same photo, but different crops of the same image," she said. "They didn't generate the photos themselves. They got the photos from a third party — a broker, a paper mill.' Researchers have been using the term "paper mill" to describe organizations that sell mass-produced low quality and fabricated research articles. Many of these fraudulent papers, Bik added, seem to come from doctors or researchers in countries where promotions are tied to publication metrics. They see it as an investment, she explained, where a couple of thousand dollars gets them a paper, and a fast track up the promotional ladder. This institutional pressure is especially common in India and China, where promotions, medical licensing or graduation are linked by policy to publication counts, several experts said. In a survey of medical residents in China three years ago, 47% admitted to buying and selling papers, letting other people write papers, or writing papers for others. When the study authors analyzed an archive of articles from a business offering services to "research professionals who are desperate" for publication, they found 26% of the authors were from India. Although the "publish or perish" culture is also common in the U.S., it manifests more in expectations around prestige, funding and tenure, rather than fixed quotas. India and China are the world's most populous nations and both are scientific powerhouses. The paper notes that science fraud can happen anywhere. The accumulation of fake literature has turned some scientific fields — RNA biology, for example — into what Richardson called an academic "minefield," making it difficult for researchers to identify which studies are reliable. Some fraudulent studies have even made it into meta-analyses that shape the way doctors treat patients. They found evidence that this field of research has been targeted by bad actors. Experts say growing awareness of fraud could feed broader skepticism of science, especially if institutional action doesn't keep up. 'The more polluted the record becomes, the harder it is to clean up, and the harder it is to rebuild trust inside and outside the scientific community,' said Stephanie Kinnan, a longtime member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). The scientific community has tools to fight back. It fines and excludes researchers and universities. Journals retract articles. Aggregators can sideline problematic journals. But the authors of the paper found the amount of "research" from suspected paper mills has been doubling roughly every 1½ years. The actions are not keeping up. For Amaral, and many other scientists, the implications are deeply personal. 'I dreamed of being a scientist since I was 12,' he said. 'Seeing the thing that I've dreamt of being a part of, that I cherish, being potentially destroyed is really enraging.' All research is built on previous research, Amaral explained. That collapses without trust. "This is the great fear — that the entire scientific enterprise that gave us vaccines, that gave us medicine for cancer, that gave us, X-ray machines, computer scanning devices — would just disappear,' he said. The speed of your steps could make a significant difference in adding years to your life, according to a new study. Researchers led by a team from Vanderbilt University in the US analyzed the physical activity of 79,856 adults in 12 US states, comparing links between time spent walking slowly, time spent walking quickly, and eventual cause of death (where applicable) across an average follow-up period of almost 17 years. The data showed that those people who spent at least a quarter of an hour each day walking briskly were significantly less likely to die during the study period, especially from cardiovascular disease. What makes the findings particularly useful is they're based on a sample that includes people typically underrepresented in walking studies like this: the cohort was predominantly made up of low-income and Black individuals, who are often more likely to live in impoverished areas and less likely to have access to safe walking spaces. Related: "Our research has shown that fast walking as little as 15 minutes a day was associated with a nearly 20 percent reduction in total mortality, while a smaller reduction in mortality was found in association with more than three hours of daily slow walking," says epidemiologist Wei Zheng, from Vanderbilt University "This benefit remained strong even after accounting for other lifestyle factors and was consistent across various sensitivity analyses." The researchers categorized slow walking as walking the dog, or walking around at work. To qualify for the faster walking linked to the reduction in the risk of death, it had to be something like climbing stairs or walking briskly as part of an exercise routine. While the study isn't comprehensive enough to show direct cause and effect, the drop in mortality risk is significant enough to strongly suggest some kind of link, and the researchers think the benefits that aerobic exercise brings to heart health is key. Fast walking makes the heart work harder, improving cardiovascular health. Burning calories can also help people stick to a healthy weight. "While the health benefits of daily walking are well established, limited research has investigated the effects of factors such as walking pace on mortality, particularly in low-income and Black/African-American populations," says Zheng. One of the reasons that researchers are so keen to promote walking as a way of staying healthy is that it's just about the simplest exercise out there: most of us can do it, without any special equipment, and it's relatively easy to roll into a daily routine (try parking a little further away from work, for example). "Public health campaigns and community-based programs can emphasize the importance and availability of fast walking to improve health outcomes, providing resources and support to facilitate increased fast walking within all communities," says epidemiologist Lili Liu, from Vanderbilt University. The research has been published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine. Moreover, motivation to interact with the other sex may have overridden any attention or response to the music. Dancing behaviors are present in at least 10 out of 21 species of cockatoo—and many of their moves are similar to the courtship displays of wild parrots. This suggests that their dancing may have originated as courtship behavior that has been redirected towards their owners. The study also notes that dance behavior might fit the definition of play, as it is initiated voluntarily by the birds, and it appears to be intrinsically rewarding. This means that music might actually serve as enrichment for them. "As well as supporting the presence of positive emotions in birds and advancing dance behavior as an excellent model to study parrot emotions, the work suggests that playing music to parrots may provide a useful approach to enrich their lives in captivity, with positive effects on their welfare," Lubke said in a statement. However, paper coauthor professor Rafael Freire added that further research is necessary to determine whether or not music can actually trigger dance in captive birds and serve as a form of environmental enrichment.
