Mohammad Amir addresses his celebration after dismissing Babar Azam in HBL PSL

Express Tribune28-04-2025
Quetta Gladiators' seasoned pacer Mohammad Amir has opened up after dismissing Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam for the second time in the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, delivering a crucial blow in Sunday's clash at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium.
Amir, who had earlier removed Babar for a duck during their first encounter this season, once again produced a moment of magic by trapping the star batter lbw with a sharp in-swinger in the third over of Zalmi's innings.
His celebration — a mix of sheer delight and theatrical flair aimed at the Gladiators' dugout — set the tone for Quetta's dominant 64-run victory, later sealed by Faheem Ashraf's stunning five-wicket haul.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Amir said such on-field rivalries add much-needed entertainment to the format.
"Whether on the field or social media, these rivalries entertain people, especially in T20s—that's the main goal," Amir said.
"As a bowler, my role is to tease the batter and show aggression, while the batter aims to score runs. These things should happen, but within limits. My fans post my videos, Babar's fans post his. It's all great for the tournament."
Despite the heated nature of the contest, Amir praised Babar's class and explained the tactical thinking behind his dismissal.
"Babar Azam is a big player, there is no doubt in that," he acknowledged.
"My plan is always to utilise the swing with the new ball. Whoever it is, Saim or Babar. I thought Babar would be ready for the outswinger, so I tried to bring it back in."
Amir's early strike not only rattled Zalmi but also reinforced his reputation as one of the most canny and competitive bowlers in the HBL PSL circuit, with his duels against top batters like Babar adding extra drama to the tournament.

Shouldn't have dropped Babar: Afridi

Pakistan great Shahid Afridi expressed his disappointment over the exclusion of former captain Babar Azam. Photo: AFP/file Former Pakistan captain and star all-rounder Shahid Afridi has opened up on the exclusion of Babar Azam from the national T20I side, particularly with major tournaments like the Asia Cup and ICC T20 World Cup approaching. In a recent interview, Afridi was asked whether Babar and Mohammad Rizwan still deserve a place in the squad. He responded by highlighting the importance of consistency and strike rate in T20 cricket. "I believe that, given the current situation I'm seeing, if we talk about strike rate, then the players should have an even better strike rate," Afridi said. The 48-year-old went on to express his disappointment over the exclusion of the former captain, emphasising that his consistency and ability to score runs under pressure should not be overlooked. He pointed out that Babar was performing with a strike rate comparable to the new players currently being tested in the team, and questioned the logic behind sidelining him. "Otherwise, Babar is a consistent performer — he's the kind of player that, when he steps onto the field, you expect him to score runs. He was playing with a similar strike rate too, so we shouldn't have dropped Babar either," he stated. "The players who are currently playing — fine, you're giving new boys a chance — but they should be consistent and have a good strike rate," he added. Despite being Pakistan's leading run-scorers in T20I history, Babar and Rizwan have not played a T20I since December 13, 2024. Previously, addressing the future in T20Is for the star trio, skipper Salman Ali Agha emphasised their continued importance in the team setup. While speaking to the media on July 14 during a white-ball training camp ahead of the Bangladesh series, the T20I captain reiterated that senior players Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi remain integral to Pakistan's T20 World Cup plans. He acknowledged their experience and match-winning abilities, noting that their presence adds balance and depth to the squad as Pakistan looks to build momentum heading into the global tournament. "Shaheen Shah Afridi, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan are senior players and they are part of our core pool of 25 players," he said. "We need to have players who can replace anyone at any given time, and that's why we are working on strengthening our bench. As part of our roadmap for upcoming assignments, we've shortlisted 25 players, and those players will be seen featuring in matches until the T20 World Cup," Agha concluded. The ICC Men's T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held next year in India and Sri Lanka. Moreover, Afridi criticised the selection policies and stressed the importance of strengthening domestic cricket. "Once you raise the standard of your domestic cricket, all three formats will improve," Afridi said. "The biggest mistake we make is experimenting with the national team. A player is often selected based on just one or two good innings in the PSL. Entry into the Pakistan team should not be so easy," he added. The 48-year-old further highlighted the need for a more structured development pathway for emerging players. "If someone shows talent, they should be made to play at the lower levels — in domestic and first-class cricket. The process of making it into Shaheens (Pakistan's 'A' team) shouldn't be easy either. It should be challenging so players understand what it takes to represent Pakistan," he stated.

Babar's T20I future hangs in balance

Ahead of the Asia Cup, Pakistan's selectors are hesitant to revisit some former players, but with Fakhar Zaman ruled out due to injury, calls for Babar Azam's return to the national squad have started gaining momentum. However, sources within the selection committee have stated that no formal discussion has yet taken place on the matter, and Fakhar's unavailability for the tournament is not confirmed at this point. A review meeting will be held after the West Indies tour, where the selection committee will assess the situation. According to a PCB official, the door to the T20 squad remains open for Babar, and if Fakhar is not available, his return could be considered. Still, it was emphasized that the board has adopted a forward-looking policy, focusing on giving younger players opportunities, and bringing Babar back at this stage could put unnecessary pressure on the current T20 captain, Salman Ali Agha. Fakhar sustained an injury before the third T20 match during the West Indies tour, forcing him to return home. He has also been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series. While it remains unclear how long his recovery will take, fans have already begun demanding Babar Azam's return. Despite this public sentiment, sources indicate that there is no certainty about his comeback, and no official instructions have been issued regarding his inclusion in the Asia Cup squad. Fakhar is currently undergoing rehabilitation, and a final decision will only be taken after a fitness assessment. Babar last appeared in a T20 International in December 2024 against South Africa. Over his last 10 matches, he accumulated 236 runs at an average of 26, without registering a single half-century. In fact, three of his last five innings ended without him even reaching double figures. He last captained Pakistan during the 2024 T20 World Cup, where the team's performance was highly underwhelming, prompting the PCB to shift its focus toward youth development. While there is a clear intention to invest in future talent, some stakeholders believe that Babar's experience would be vital in high-pressure encounters, particularly against India in the Asia Cup. The 31-year-old made his T20I debut in November 2024 under the captaincy of Mohammad Rizwan. He stepped in as captain in the third match of the same series against Australia when Rizwan was unavailable, although the team lost that match. Since then, in the absence of senior players, Salman has led Pakistan in several bilateral series: Won 2-1 in Zimbabwe Lost 4-1 in New Zealand Clean-swept Bangladesh 3-0 at home Lost the return series in Bangladesh 2-1 Recently defeated West Indies 2-1 Out of his 20 T20I appearances, 18 have been as captain. In these matches, he has scored 380 runs, including three half-centuries, and has also taken 4 wickets in the format. Asian cricket rights sold The media rights for Asian cricket in Pakistan have been sold to the state television for $5.2 million (approximately PKR 1.5 billion). These rights include two men's Asia Cups. According to details, the Asia Cup will be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28, featuring 19 matches. If both teams reach the final, three Pakistan-India matches are expected. Last year, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) sold 8-year media rights (from 2024 to 2031) to Sony India for $170 million (approximately PKR 47.26 billion). These rights include four men's and four women's Asia Cups, as well as emerging tournaments, totaling 119 matches. Sony India demanded $12 million for broadcasting rights in Pakistan for the two Asia Cups, but none of the three competing Pakistani channels were willing to pay such a high amount. According to them, the current market conditions do not support heavy investments with assured profits. There was also discussion about forming a consortium among channels. However, a major development occurred recently when Pakistan's state television acquired the Asian cricket broadcasting rights from 2025 to 2027 for $5.2 million. Sony India is still negotiating with two private Pakistani channels, who may jointly purchase the rights. The Indian broadcaster aims to secure up to more $5 million from Pakistan. The digital rights deal in Pakistan has already been finalized. It's worth noting that Pakistan's share in ACC media rights is approximately 25% (around $42.5 million). The digital rights are separate, and the majority of the revenue (around 65%) comes from India.

Even opposition noticed my fitness: Mir

Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir has expressed his deep frustration over continuous exclusion from the national setup despite consistent performances and effort. In a candid interview, Mir shared his side of the story, questioning the transparency of selection decisions. "When I'm available, I don't get selected — so what's left to say about anything else? I just don't understand it," said Usama. "I was the highest wicket-taker in last year's PSL, yet I wasn't picked. This year, although I didn't perform at that level, there were still players with worse performances who got selected. It's very clear to me now," he added. The 29-year-old, who continues to be overlooked for national selection despite consistent performances, expressed his deep frustration over the handling of his career and selection process. "I feel like I'm at a stage where, if I were given a chance, the response would simply be, 'Perform well and you'll be selected,' and so on," he said. Highlighting his record-breaking achievements, the spinner questioned why his performances have not been rewarded. "Even today, I still hold the record for the most wickets in a single PSL season over ten editions — but despite that, I wasn't picked. If you look at my last match performance, people still say, 'You won us that game — how did you get dropped after that?' I can't understand it either," he stated. He then explained how he responded to criticism about his fitness by taking serious steps to improve. "After that, I worked extremely hard. They made fitness an excuse. I was told I failed the fitness test, so I trained hard. I was captain of the Sialkot team; the trainers, the head coach—all can vouch for me. Even opposition teams were surprised by how much effort I was putting in," he revealed. Despite putting in the work, Mir says he was never given the promised opportunity to prove his fitness. "I got myself fit. They told me, 'You're being given time. Your test will be conducted later as Champions T20 is approaching.' But even at the promised time, no test was taken. I kept calling everyone—selectors, officials (I won't name names) — all the decision-makers. I was repeatedly told, 'Just wait a little longer.' And then came a time when they stopped responding altogether," he added. He shared how the communication breakdown worsened, even when he made persistent efforts to reach out. "They took a whole month to reply to just one of my messages. I was told, 'Your test is scheduled on this date.' That date never came. Rest days kept coming, but no test was conducted. This happened three, four, even five times. I kept calling — they stopped picking up. They stopped responding to messages," he lamented. Usama recalled a particularly baffling situation before his Big Bash League stint, where confusion and miscommunication hit a new low. "I was about to leave for the Big Bash League (BBL), and I wanted to clear everything before leaving. I landed in Sydney on the 23rd, and the next day, on the 24th, I received a message saying, 'You have to report on the 26th,'" he recalled. He revealed that the same official who issued his NOC just days earlier seemed unaware of his travel. "The same official had issued me the NOC on the 21st. I asked him, 'Don't you know where I am?' and he replied, 'I don't know.' I said, 'You're the one who issued the NOC! Didn't you check the dates before approving it? Now how can I just come back? I've been chasing you for a whole month, and now you suddenly want me to return?'" he recounted. Concluding his statement, Usama said he still struggles to understand why he's been treated this way. "These are the kind of things that happened with me—and I'm genuinely shocked as to why. I have proof of everything I've said," he concluded.
