Kashmiri student assaulted in Nagpur, JKSA urges CM Fadnavis's intervention

NAGPUR: A student from Jammu and Kashmir studying at a pharmacy college in Nagpur was thrashed by a group of local residents, police said on Tuesday. A motive was not yet clear, they said.
The incident took place on Sunday evening in the Kamptee area of the Maharashtra city, but no complaint has been received so far from the victim, said a senior police official.
Explaining the sequence of events, he said two first-year Bachelor of Pharmacy students, hailing from Doda town and Jammu, were returning to their hostel when one of them went to answer nature's call, while the other stood on the roadside waiting for him.
At the same time, a group of local residents came to the spot and started questioning the student standing on the roadside and sought to know from where he had come.
As he was unable to answer their questions, the residents started thrashing him, said the official.
The other student returned and informed the residents that both were students of a local college.
After this, the locals allowed them to go, he said.
One of the pupils later informed about the incident to J&K Students Association office-bearer Nasir Khuehami, who posted about it on his X account and urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to intervene in the matter.
The attack came days after Kashmiri students in several parts of the country faced

, the student however, ruled out a hate motive behind the attack and said it was their first year in Nagpur and they did not know the area, where the incident took place, well.
The student said the incident took place at around 6.15 pm when they stopped at a road in Kamptee.
Two to three persons came to the spot and asked them who they were and from where they hailed.
The student said he told them they hailed from Jammu and Kashmir, but "anti-social elements" started beating them.
Meanwhile, national convenor of the J&K Students Association Khuehami, in a post on social media site X, said a Jammu and Kashmir student was brutally assaulted in Nagpur.
"The student from Doda area of J&K was brutally thrashed without any rhyme & reason by fringe elements," he said.
Khuehami said according to the victim, two to three goons attacked him.
"Some of the assailants knocked him down and started punching him on the face and stomach, and hitting him on his knees. He was slapped 8-9 times on the face, neck, back, and arms," the student leader wrote.
Khuehami requested Chief Minister Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio, to intervene in the matter and take strict action against the culprits.
Khuehami said after he brought to the notice of the Maharashtra CMO about the Kamptee incident, he got a call from IGP (Law & Order) Manoj Kumar Sharma, who took details about the incident from him and also the phone number of the victim.
He maintained that the IGP assured him strict legal action will be taken against the culprits.

Ex-prez Hamid returns to Bangladesh after medical treatment abroad: Reports

Hamid's departure for Thailand on May 8 prompted a protest by the student group Students Against Discrimination (SAD) as he was allowed to leave the country despite being accused in a murder case. The 81-year-old, who served two terms as president during deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League regime, arrived at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 1:45 am, news portal Prothom Alo reported. Dhaka, Jun 9 (PTI) Bangladesh's former president Abdul Hamid returned to the country on Monday after receiving medical treatment abroad, according to media reports. Upon his arrival, Hamid was accompanied by his son and brother-in-law, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported. He was brought down from the aircraft in a wheelchair, the report said, quoting airport authorities. Earlier, Bangladeshi authorities promised punitive actions against officials who let the former head of state leave the country. Authorities also suspended two police officers and withdrew another from his assignment in airport immigration on charges of 'negligence of duty'. Indore honeymoon murder case: From couple's disappearance to ‘kidnapped' wife Sonam Raghuvanshi's arrest

Meghalaya police on Monday arrested four accused, including 'kidnapped' Sonam Raghuvanshi, 24, wife of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi, 29, who was allegedly killed by men reportedly hired by Sonam and was found dead in the state during their honeymoon. Three other accused, who hail from Madhya Pradesh, were arrested in overnight raids, whereas Sonam was picked up from Uttar Pradesh as she 'surrendered' at the Nandganj police station. Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam, a newlywed couple, went missing on May 23 while on their honeymoon in Cherrapunjee, located in the East Khasi Hills, after their wedding on May 11. The couple had arrived in Nongriat the day before and were last seen checking out of Balaji Homestay. The scooter they had rented was discovered abandoned in Sohrarim the day after their disappearance. Ten days later, on June 2, the body of the Indore-based businessman was found in a deep gorge beneath the Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arliang. 4. A machete, believed to have been used in the murder, was also recovered near the location, followed by a search for his wife. 5. A tourist guide in Mawlakhiat, Albert Pde, stated he had seen Raghuvanshi and his wife with three men on the day they disappeared, PTI reported. Five individuals were climbing over 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am, on May 23, according to the guide. He mentioned that he recognised the couple, as he had offered to guide them down to Nongriat on May 22, but they had politely declined and chosen another guide instead. 6. Sonam's brother told the police that their family suspected she may have been 'kidnapped'. 7. Meghalaya Director General of Police, I Nongrang, informed that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested the accused from Madhya Pradesh's Indore, whereas Sonam was picked from Uttar Pradesh on Monday after she surrendered. According to ADG Law and Order, UP, Amitabh Yash, 'Sonam Raghuvanshi called her family members at around 3 AM and informed them that she was present at the Kashi Dhaba on Varanasi-Ghazipur main road. Ghazipur Police took her to the hospital and then to the One Stop Centre in Ghazipur. Meghalaya Police was present in Indore to investigate this case. Sonam Raghuvanshi will be handed over to Meghalaya Police as soon as they reach Ghazipur. UP Police has not interrogated Sonam Raghuvanshi.' 8. Nongrang said that the arrested men confessed that Sonam had hired them to slay Raghuvanshi. 9. 'The operation is still continuing in Madhya Pradesh to catch some more persons involved in the crime,' Nongrang added.
