Alexander Isak omitted from Newcastle squad for pre-season tour of east Asia

New York Times24-07-2025
Alexander Isak has not travelled with the Newcastle United squad for their pre-season tour of East Asia due to what is being described as a minor thigh problem.
The striker was not in Glasgow for Newcastle's 4-0 friendly defeat against Celtic on Saturday, with Eddie Howe admitting that the speculation surrounding his future played a '10 per cent' part in that decision. Liverpool have communicated their interest in the Sweden international.

But the head coach was adamant that, like Joelinton who was in the stands at Celtic Park, Isak's pre-season minutes were being 'managed'.
Howe insisted after the defeat to Celtic that he expected Isak to join Newcastle in Singapore and South Korea this week, but the club's squad list does not include the 25-year-old.
Isak has been nursing a minor thigh injury and has been training away from the main squad for part of this week. It was felt that a long-haul flight would be unhelpful for his rehabilitation.
However, Isak's absence will only further fuel speculation surrounding his future, even if the message from Howe and from the very top of the club is that the striker is simply not for sale this summer.
'The last thing Alex wants if he is not playing is to be sat in the stand, being under that scrutiny,' Howe said at Celtic Park. 'I don't think that's fair to the player, so if he wasn't going to play today, which we agreed, which we mutually agreed that he needs a little bit more training time, then it's best he's not here.
'For any player that (the speculation) is not an easy thing to deal with. It's not an easy thing to understand when you're fielding, no doubt from his perspective, phone calls, text messages, players and people asking him because the media now is so strong and the media message goes far and wide and that scrutiny in part, that's 10 per cent of the reason why he wasn't here.
'I just want him to focus on himself and his training ready for next week.
'I think it's difficult for me to ever give 100% clarity on any player. I'd never do that because it's football and you never know what could happen. All I can say is that Alex is happy at Newcastle. He loves the players that he plays with, the staff and the team.
'I've never had any issue with him, other than really enjoying seeing his talent and seeing him express himself. Certainly, I'm confident that he's going to be here at the start of the season.'

Then Howe reiterated that Isak is not for sale and that everyone at the club concurs with that view.
'Absolutely, yeah, absolutely,' Howe said. 'There is no one who feels any differently. From board to staff to players. We value his qualities, as a person, so it's very strong.
'We have a few of those players who are irreplaceable because they're so hard to find, to recruit and to develop. We recognise Alex's talent and ability and we're desperate to keep him.
'Alex has been really good, he's trained really well so far this season so I know there will be lots of noise round it and I can't really control that but from inside he's been really good.'
Asked on Saturday whether Isak would travel to Asia, Howe said: 'Yeah, absolutely. He's part of our squad. At this moment in time, I expect him to come.
'We love him as a player and a person and want him to stay – and that is right through the club. He's an outstanding talent and a player we cherish.'
Newcastle are due to play Arsenal in Singapore on Sunday, before matches against a K-League XI and Tottenham Hotspur in South Korea.

Lynx's Napheesa Collier assisted off court after scary collision vs. Aces

The post Lynx's Napheesa Collier assisted off court after scary collision vs. Aces appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Minnesota Lynx were riding high throughout their game against the Las Vegas Aces until the end of the third quarter, when their star player and this year's top league MVP hopeful Napheesa Collier collapsed to the court in pain. Collier needed help to stand and support to walk to the locker room from the athletic trainers. Collier was a victim of friendly fire after accidentally colliding with teammate Alanna Smith while trying to extend the team's 43-point lead over the Aces, seriously rolling her ankle at the end of the fastbreak attempt. The Lynx later reported that Collier's injury was to her right ankle and ruled her out for the remainder of the game. Collier's impact on not only her fellow Lynx team members but WNBA players as a whole was on full display, as both benches emptied to check on Collier while she was down on the court. Aces star A'ja Wilson, and Collier's Olympic teammate, was one of those who came to the Lynx superstar's aid. Fans might be able to breathe a sigh of relief since Collier was physically able to walk off the court, meaning her injury could look worse than it was. However, at this crucial point in the 2025 WNBA season, the Lynx may want to prioritize caution so that they have Collier back at full strength before the playoffs begin. Collier came into the Aces matchup averaging 23.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.7 blocks on 53.7% shooting. Her MVP bid most likely won't be at risk if she has to miss an extended amount of time, but Minnesota's quest for championship redemption after last year's loss to the New York Liberty would take a major hit if Collier can't bring 100% of herself to the game. Wings forward suffers injury scare vs. Fever

The post Wings forward suffers injury scare vs. Fever appeared first on ClutchPoints. DALLAS — The Dallas Wings were defeated by the Indiana Fever on Friday night, losing by a final score of 88-78. Indiana got the job done on the road despite Caitlin Clark's injury absence. During the fourth quarter, Wings forward Myisha Hines-Allen suffered an injury scare. Hines-Allen fell to the floor hard during a play in the final quarter. She was clearly in pain and the training staff — along with her teammates — circled around her. Hines-Allen was helped to her feet and exited the game with assistance. It appeared to be some sort of leg injury. She did later return to the bench, however. Chris Koclanes was asked after the game if he had any new updates on Hines-Allen's injury status. The Wings head coach, however, said there were no updates on the forward. The fact that Hines-Allen was able to return to the bench is promising. The hope is that she avoided any kind of serious injury. The Wings have dealt with injury trouble all season long, so the last thing they need is another long-term absence. It goes without saying, but her injury situation will be worth closely monitoring moving forward. Updates will be provided as they are made available. With a few days until the Wings' next game, Hines-Allen will have time to rest. Hines-Allen, a 29-year-old veteran, has endured an up and down season. She entered Friday night's affair averaging 6.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists per outing. She was also shooting 46.9 percent from the field ahead of the contest. Overall, the Wings have struggled throughout the 2025 campaign. They now hold an 8-21 record in 2025. The team will attempt to bounce back in their next contest against the Liberty in New York on Tuesday. It has been a challenging campaign for this Wings team, but they will continue to play hard in hopes of finishing the season strong. Chemical smell prompts NEA, SCDF inspections; Forrest Li's plan to revive Singapore football: Singapore live news

Singapore's west and central districts are experiencing a persistent burnt chemical smell that has sparked health concerns and public frustration. Residents describe the odour as similar to burning plastic or gas fumes, with some reporting nausea and headaches. The National Environment Agency (NEA) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) have stepped up inspections of industrial estates in Jurong, Bukom, and Tuas, but no hazardous substances have been detected. Air quality remains within safe limits, and no factory incidents have been reported. Authorities suspect wind patterns may be carrying fumes from upwind industrial zones. Companies have been asked to check for undetected leaks. The investigation is ongoing. Football Association of Singapore (FAS) President Forrest Li has unveiled a sweeping plan to revive Singapore football, anchored by a global search for a new head coach and a push to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup. Speaking at FAS Media Day, Li emphasised the need to make football a national conversation again. His four-pillar strategy includes Singapore Premier League (SPL) upgrades, youth development, infrastructure expansion, and technical reforms. SPL2 will replace the COE U-21 league, and prize money has more than doubled. Over 60 candidates have applied for the head coach role, with interviews underway. Li says he's personally committed to finding the right leader. With Singapore leading its qualifying group, the dream of Asian Cup glory feels within reach.
