Will exit Turkish aircraft lease in three months, IndiGo tells DGCA
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday said it has granted budget carrier IndiGo a three-month extension to operate two Boeing 777 aircraft taken on wet lease from Turkish Airlines, after the airline submitted an undertaking to terminate the lease within this extended period.
The lease period was coming to an end on May 31 and the Indian carrier had sought an extension of six months. The DGCA refused.
"However, in order to avoid passenger inconvenience due to immediate flight disruption, IndiGo has been granted a one-time last and final extension of three months upto August 31, 2025, for these damp leased aircraft, based on the undertaking from the airline that, they will terminate the damp lease with Turkish Airline within this extension period, and shall not seek any further extension for these operations," the regulator stated.
Under the wet lease terms, the aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance are all provided by the lessor — Turkish Airlines. The lessee — IndiGo — on the other hand, sells tickets and markets the service.
The DGCA's approval has come amid escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Turkey. This follows the latter's diplomatic and military support to Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 and Operation Sindoor on May 7.
It allowed IndiGo to start flights to Istanbul, which is outside the range of a normal narrowbody plane like A320. For IndiGo, this comes without it immediately investing in widebody aircraft.
Of the around 430 planes in IndiGo's fleet, only three are widebody — two leased from Turkish Airlines and one from Norse Atlantic Airways. The remaining are narrowbody aircraft.
Speaking to reporters earlier in the day, IndiGo Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pieter Elbers defended the airline's partnership with Turkish Airlines. He said it functions within established international norms and government policies.
'The relationship between countries in the aviation sector is governed by what are known as Air Services Agreements. These define the number of flights that can be operated between nations,' Elbers said.
He added that the airline operates in full compliance with the regulatory framework in place. 'If there are any changes in the framework, we will naturally adjust our operations to stay aligned,' he said.
Elbers also emphasised that the leased aircraft are serving a clear passenger need, with the vast majority of travellers on these flights being Indian nationals.
'People have made travel plans and bookings. Our priority is to ensure that we continue to serve them. At the same time, we remain alert and responsive to any changes in the regulatory or geopolitical landscape,' he said.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), on May 15, revoked the security clearance of Istanbul-based Çelebi Aviation Holding, citing national security concerns.
Çelebi, which provided ground handling services at major Indian airports, challenged the decision in court.

Cane variety with 14% sugar recovery rate can boost Maha's economy: Gadkari
Union minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted the economic potential of a new sugarcane variety with a 14 per cent sugar recovery rate, stating that it could increase Maharashtra's economic output by ₹25,000 crore. Speaking at the silver jubilee event of the Saturday Club Global Trust in Nagpur, Gadkari said, 'Brazil has developed a sugarcane breed through biotechnology that offers a 14 per cent sugar recovery. If we use a similar variety in Maharashtra, it could positively impact our state's economy by ₹25,000 crore.' 'Kolhapur district currently records the highest sugar recovery in Maharashtra, at around 12 to 12.5 per cent, while Vidarbha lags at approximately 11.25 per cent. Even a 1 per cent increase in sugar recovery translates to gains of ₹7 to ₹8 crore,' he noted, highlighting the substantial economic benefits of improved sugarcane breeds. The minister mentioned that he had provided the Vasantdada Sugar Institute with comprehensive information about the high-yielding variety and requested it to develop a breed tailored to local conditions. 'Anyone who understands demand and supply can succeed. If you identify what is in short supply and produce it, there is profit,' he said. During his address, Gadkari also spoke about the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, stressing the importance of understanding market dynamics. He further emphasised that credibility and honesty are essential traits for entrepreneurs today. 'Credibility is more important than anything else in business. There are no shortcuts. Quality and punctuality are essential, and one must think with a futuristic vision for at least the next 25 years,' he added. Automobile industry Sharing insights on manufacturing scale, Gadkari recounted a conversation with the World Chairman of Mercedes-Benz. 'I told him I do not approve of your business model. You produce only 20,000 cars a year. If you increase that to two lakh cars, your production cost will fall by 22 per cent. Managing both quality and volume is crucial. Higher volumes reduce costs and improve market positioning,' he remarked. He pointed out that when he assumed office, the Indian automobile industry was worth ₹7 trillion, ranking seventh globally. 'Today, it is ₹23 trillion, and we have overtaken Japan to become the third-largest automobile economy. The United States tops the list at ₹78 trillion, followed by China at ₹49 trillion,' he said. Alternative fuels Discussing the shift towards alternative fuels, Gadkari acknowledged that while petrol and diesel remain the global standards, India is moving ahead with vehicles using CNG, LNG, ethanol, methanol, biodiesel, and hydrogen. 'My own car runs on a flex engine with 40 per cent ethanol blended in petrol. Petrol costs ₹120 per litre, while ethanol is about ₹60. Flex engines reduce transportation costs significantly,' he pointed out.

IndiGo doubles its wide-body aircraft order, to buy additional 30 Airbus A350
Currently, the long-haul segment to and from India is largely controlled by foreign carriers like Emirates and Qatar Airways. Among Indian airlines, only Tata Group's Air India operates such flights -- a gap IndiGo now seeks to fill. 'This strategic move will enable IndiGo to spread its wings further and expand its long-haul international network, connecting Indian metros to different parts of the world. With this, it will create more travel options for its customers to new international destinations and also enable more flights to the hubs of its partner airlines,' the airline said. In March 2025, IndiGo began preparing for its long-haul operations with the introduction of six temporarily leased wide-body Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, deliveries of which will be concluded by 2026. IndiGo's Airbus A350-900 aircraft will be powered by Rolls Royce's Trent XWB engine. In June 2023, IndiGo had placed the largest-ever single aircraft order by any airline for 500 aircraft with Airbus. With that, the outstanding orderbook of IndiGo stands at more than 900 aircraft which are yet to be delivered well into the next decade. With one new aircraft joining the fleet every week throughout FY26, IndiGo anticipates surpassing a fleet size of 600 aircraft by 2030.
