2026 NFL Draft Back in Play? Texas QB Arch Manning Contradicts His Grandfather

There's so much speculation about Texas quarterback Arch Manning's future, in the media and even within his own family, that it can be hard for him to keep up.
On Tuesday, Manning insisted he's not plotting out how long he'll stay at Texas or when he'll enter the NFL draft, despite his grandfather's recent prediction that he'll be with the Longhorns through the 2026 season. "Arch isn't going to do that," Manning declared to Texas Monthly Magazine about the 2026 NFL Draft. "He'll be at Texas."
"I don't know where he got that from," Arch Manning said in his first meeting with reporters since SEC media days in mid-July. "He texted me to apologize about that. I'm really just taking it day by day right now."
Arch Manning has been careful while talking about his future as he leads the No. 1 Longhorns as the full-time starter after playing behind Quinn Ewers the past two seasons. Manning enters this season as the early favorite for the Heisman Trophy, has endorsement deals worth millions and comes from the most famous quarterbacking family in football. Grandfather Archie played in the NFL and uncles Peyton and Eli combined for four Super Bowl victories.
Add that together and Arch Manning is shouldering the biggest spotlight of any player in the country. Texas opens the season Aug. 30 at No. 3 Ohio State after losing to the Buckeyes in the national playoff semifinals last season.

Manning is also very close to his grandfather, despite any confusion about whether he's destined for one or two seasons as the Texas starter before heading to the NFL. Manning noted Tuesday how Archie is always giving him advice on how to avoid taking big hits to prolong his career.
"Those hits add up," Arch Manning said. "My grandfather, he's hobbling around these days. He ends every call with 'get down or get out of bounds.'"
Arch Manning appeared in 10 games for Texas in 2024, throwing for 939 yards and 9 touchdowns in 90 attempts, and started two games when Quinn Ewers was dealing with an oblique strain.

2025 NFL MVP betting, odds: Public bettors backing Joe Burrow; big bets on Lamar Jackson
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow put up an incredible season last year, compiling 4,918 passing yard and 43 touchdowns while throwing nine interceptions. He also was third in the NFL with a total QBR of 74.7, the highest of his career. However, the Bengals went 9-8 and missed the postseason. Burrow has 15.7% of all MVP wagers at BetMGM sportsbooks, along with 24.3% of the handle. Over the past few weeks, Jackson has moved into the position of consensus MVP favorite at sportsbooks, albeit just slightly ahead of Allen and Burrow. "Jackson is the most-bet player to win MVP with us in terms of accumulation," Jamey Pileggi, risk manager at Circa Sports, said. "We moved based on liability and just overall popularity that the public seems to have for him in this market." There are two big reported bets on Jackson to win MVP at multiple sportsbooks as well: $50,000 on Jackson to win NFL MVP at ESPN BET at +550 odds to win $275,000. $50,000 on Jackson to win NFL MVP at Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas at +600 to win $300,000. After a historic rookie season in which he led his team to the NFC championship game, Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (+750) has the second-most wagers (8.5%) and total money bet (8.1%) in the MVP market at BetMGM. The Commanders still have yet to sign WR Terry McLaurin, who is looking for a new contract. Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (+700), a two-time NFL MVP, has the third-most bets and total dollars wagered. Ever since Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson won the MVP in 2012, 12 straight quarterbacks have won the award.

Jets held a player-led practice last Sunday
Aaron Glenn is trying to change the Jets' trajectory in his first year as the team's head coach and his approach to preparing for the regular season made room for an unusual practice last Sunday. The Jets held a practice that was not announced publicly a day after their preseason game against the Giants. It was unusual because Glenn was the only member of the coaching staff in attendance and the players led the drills in what the team is officially calling a walkthrough. Safety Andre Cisco said it showed that Glenn wants a "player-driven team." "It was personally different for me because I've never experienced that — having no coaches out there," cornerback Brandon Stephens, via Rich Cimimi of "It was great for us to lead the groups by ourselves." Cimini notes that Glenn may have gotten the idea for a player-led practice from his days as a Jets player. Bill Parcells once pulled himself and the rest of the coaching staff out of a late 1990s practice because he was angry with the team and players led the rest of the session. Those were better days for the Jets — Parcells took them to an AFC title game — and Glenn may be hoping that history repeats itself during his tenure.

Um, yeah, I, I think, yeah, look, yeah, it's, it's the obvious one. So, um, the guy was, yeah, the guy was 2nd in, in, uh, scramble yards last year despite not playing a full season. He's definitely an asset as a runner. I think he's gonna, I think that's gonna behoove him well when he gets some pressure this year, but there were, there's some metrics that like he was really good over the middle of the field. Last year. When the middle field was open, uh, post snap, according to PFF he was, um, 6th in adjusted yards per attempt on those plays. Behind Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Brock Purdy, right ahead of Matthew Stafford. Only, uh, those 6 guys that I mentioned, so not Stafford, but the other 6. They're the only ones that are over 8 adjusted yards per attempt over the middle of the field. So, um, good player. I think he, he's a good passer. Like he's, he's gonna be erratic every now and again. I think that's fine. But I, I really do think like this receiver room has guys that can get open. Um, Pop Douglas, definitely like a limited slot player, but he's more of a man beating slot player than his zone slot guy. So that is a little, again, he's a little bit of an odd player, but I think him and Diggs can work in concert. Diggs is still a guy who can get you separation underneath. We'll see about Keyshawn Boy, but if Kyle Williams ever gets out there, yeah, that's the exact type of small receiver who can beat press coverage that I'm like, why don't we play him outside? The coaching staff never does, and I always like him a little bit ahead of consensus, but what, what can you do? So welcome to the Jayden Reid zone, uh, Kyle Williams, but you know, Hunter Henry is a reliable tight end and Traveon Henderson out of the backfield, man. I mean, he's a guy that I think will, will create layups for Drake May. So. I, I don't quite know where we're getting, you know, 3 pointers and, and I'm mixing metaphors, but like where we're getting three-pointers and home runs and stuff like that, but I, but I do think we can get a lot of layups in this, in this passing game here. What I like about May and you saying you give him the easy chances is that he's a walking, talking, and explosive play as a runner and as a passer. Like he wants to push the ball and it's not pushing the ball where I'm like, what are you doing, man? That's dumb. I, he's a selectively aggressive, but it's like always makes sense in my mind. Um, it kind of caught him a couple times at the end of last season when he was really trying to push in two minutes situations, and he threw a couple of picks. One of them was booty, kind of gamed him up, another one, he kind of a little too much dip on his chip. But those are what you need to be a good quarterback. You need these guys that want to push the ball, even when he has a bad offense line and receivers he can't trust. So if that stuff improves. Yeah, and we're saying we're gonna let him get on base a little bit more. I, I just think it's all systems go, even if the personnel and the surroundings aren't perfect. I do think that we're gonna see a baseline where those flashes are more sustained. It's not just people making fun and go, Oh, you like him because of this, you like him because of that. It's like, no, I think anyone that watches him kind of realizes what he can, he's capable of. Close
