Jamaat support for UDF remains hot topic in Nilambur bypoll campaign
MALAPPURAM: As the bypoll campaign heats up in Nilambur, the CPM is trying to keep the Congress' relationship with Jamaat-e-Islami an active topic of discussion.
The CPM alleged that the Congress, which has repeatedly stated that it has no ties with communal forces at the national level, is taking a contradictory stance in the state. This is the main issue that the CPM is highlighting in the final week of the campaign.
'While the Congress national leadership is taking a stand against communalism, the state Congress leadership is mobilising communal forces to win in Nilambur. Priyanka Gandhi, who is also the MP from Wayanad, should clarify her stand on the matter,' CPM state secretary MV Govindan said.
Meanwhile, KPCC president Sunny Joseph clarified that there is no alliance with the Welfare Party, but only an election relationship. 'There is no frontal relationship with the Welfare Party. There have been no discussions regarding it. There is only an electoral relationship with them,' he said.
AICC general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal also reiterated the same stance. 'We have not told anyone not to vote for us. Accepting support in elections does not mean that we support their positions,' Venugopal told reporters in Nilambur.
Meanwhile, Venugopal refused to comment on Opposition Leader VD Satheesan's statement that Jamaat-e-Islami had changed its stance on an Islamic nation. 'That you should ask him,' he said.

NIA cracks down on terror network of Hizb-ut-Tahrir in MP, Rajasthan
Bhopal/Jaipur: NIA on Saturday raided three locations in MP's Bhopal and two in Rajasthan's Jhalawar as part of its probe into a terror conspiracy by the banned radical outfit Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT), which is accused of radicalising Muslim youth and attempting to forge links with global terror networks such as ISIS. The extensive searches were triggered by the data recovered from the mobile phone of Mohsin Khan --- a key conspirator, financier, and recruiter for HuT in India --- who was arrested by NIA in Bhopal last week. The information led to the identification of another suspect in Jhalawar's Manohar Thana town. "Mohsin Khan motivated Muslim youth to spread violence in a bid to overthrow India's democratically elected govt and establish an Islamic state governed by Shariah law through the creation of a Caliphate," said an NIA source. NIA seized digital devices and incriminating materials during coordinated search operations at Aishbagh, Ashoka Garden, and the Shahjahanabad area in Bhopal, as well as a house in Kaji Chowk and a shop near Jama Masjid in Jhalawar. The recovered devices are being sent for forensic analysis to gather further evidence related to the conspiracy. In Nilambur fray, Vijayan pick vs Congress stalwart vs ‘spoiler'
Nilambur is dripping in rain. It is quite a while since Kerala saw a wet election and like a well-begun monsoon gone awry, the bypoll in the Nilambur constituency seems to be turning less and less predictable. The state Assembly is into its slog overs — and this by-election wasn't meant to shake the earth, just set the tone for the coming big polls due early next year. The campaign was being watched more for its atmospherics than the outcome. The Opposition Congress-led UDF was a clear favourite here. Its candidate Aryadan Shoukath is a second-generation leader from a steadfast Congress family of this old Malabar teak town with considerable Muslim presence. His late father Aryadan Mohammad had won eight times as an MLA from here, going on to serve as a minister, and a trouble-shooter, in the erstwhile Congress-led coalition regime. Shoukath nurtured his father's formidable political legacy. As head of the Nilambur Municipality and before it was upgraded the panchayat, he caught national attention for his literacy, child welfare and health schemes. His support base includes Adivasis, who departed from custom and came down from the hills to attend his daughter's wedding in 2015. Many believed that Shoukath would have a smooth sailing in the bypoll. But what appeared to be a walkover is now looking like a contest, thanks to rival candidate M Swaraj of the ruling CPI(M). Handpicked by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the choice 'cannot go wrong', say comrades. Several leaders from the CPI(M)-led LDF speak in unison for their chief, who seeks next year a third successive term, an uphill task in the shifty state. The June 19 Nilambur bypoll is no bellwether but its sheer proximity to the Assembly polls has pepped up the campaigns of the key contenders. That the CPI(M) is on overdrive is evident in the briefest of pit stops. In Pothukkallu panchayat at Kuttamkulam Kunnu, a tiny spot beyond the state highway and Google Maps, Swaraj's roadshow has a ten-minute stop which cannot be better packaged. What follows could be the envy of event managers. In all of three minutes, the candidate is ceremonially ushered in by a percussion ensemble in traditional temple wear and serially garlanded by senior comrades. Next, he makes his two-minute campaign pitch and stops abruptly to direct a local talent to croon a one-minute snatch from the eternal Communist hymn for martyrdom, 'Balikuteerangale'. Within seconds, a box of sweets pops up and is emptied in no time, provoking a punchline from Swaraj: 'Ladoos are already here. We have won.' Earlier in the day, the Congress candidate's campaign looked less organised but more free flowing. At street meetings in his home turf, Shoukath slips out of his car almost unnoticed and instantly merges with clusters of voters many of whom he seems to know by first name. More than handshakes, he hugs and that gives him extra proximity to the voter ear into which he whispers. The hush-hush adds a certain mystique to the personal contact. After this, his amplified articulation from the makeshift dais is a mere formality. Shoukath is no pushover, says an insider who pauses to caution that there is a potential 'spoiler' in the fray, P V Anvar, the previous legislator whose resignation necessitated the byoll. Spurned by the state's two major fronts, the well-connected businessman-turned-politician, Anvar, contesting again as an Independent, has put up text-heavy hoardings that list in bullet points his pique and promise. Barely anyone halts to look up and read through the frozen power point presentation, though. Otherwise, it would have caused traffic snarls in this hilly terrain. A recurring presence on the winding roads is the BJP-led NDA's decked up vehicle seeking votes for its candidate Mohan George. Recorded audio plays in loop and the vehicle is empty but for the dutiful soul at the wheel. The BJP, led by state unit head Rajeev Chandrasekhar, must be keen to cross the Vindhyas, but that may not happen hurriedly across the Nilambur hills.

Kadu Ends Hunger Strike After State Govt Assurance
Nagpur/Amravati: Prahar Janshakti Party (PJP) president Bachchu Kadu on Saturday ended his week-long hunger strike at Gurukunj Mozari in Amravati after receiving a written assurance from the Maharashtra govt regarding his key demands. Industries Minister Uday Samant handed Kadu an official letter from revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, confirming the state's commitment to address the issues in a time-bound manner. Kadu, who was on hunger strike since Sunday last, was demanding the implementation of 17 key demands, most prominently a blanket farm loan waiver, issuance of fresh agricultural loans ahead of the kharif season, and an increase in the monthly honorarium to persons with disabilities (divyangs). According to the letter from Bawankule, the govt agreed to constitute a high-powered committee within 15 days to finalise the mechanism for the farm loan waiver. A formal decision on the waiver will follow the committee's report. It also states that the govt will hold a separate meeting to decide on stopping the forcible recovery of pending farm loans and facilitating the disbursal of new crop loans. Regarding the hike in the monthly honorarium for divyangs, the letter notes that a budgetary provision for this will be included in the supplementary demands scheduled for the monsoon session of the legislature beginning June 30. For the remaining demands, the govt assured further meetings with concerned ministers and the chief minister. K adu ended his agitation after recieving the letter, breaking his fast by accepting juice from Samant. Later, both leaders paid tribute to Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj at Mozari. MLA Amol Mitkari and senior leader Kamaltai Gawai were also present. Kadu also spoke with CM Devendra Fadnavis on the phone. Samant expressed gratitude to Kadu for responding positively to the state's appeal. "The govt has taken his demands seriously. His health deteriorated over the past few days, and we are relieved that he has ended his fast," he said. Kadu, while thanking supporters, warned that if the promises made are not implemented, he along with supporters will march into Mumbai's Mantralaya on Oct 2. "This is only a pause. If the govt does not act, we will return with stronger resolve," he said. The protest, which drew wide political attention and backing from opposition parties including the Congress, was aimed at pressing for unconditional farm loan waivers and urgent relief measures for affected communities. Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar earlier expressed solidarity with Kadu, urging the govt to act instead of issuing fresh assurances.
