Tom Aspinall provides stunning update as Brit claims Jon Jones is 'retired'

Daily Mirror2 days ago

The British heavyweight star has not fought in nearly a year and has grown frustrated with the lack of movement regarding his next fight in the UFC
Tom Aspinall has declared himself the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion after stating that Jon Jones is 'retired.'
The interim heavyweight champion has not fought since successfully defending the strap, following a first-round knockout win against Curtis Blaydes. Aspinall has been growing increasingly frustrated with Jones' antics over the last few months. Following Jones' victory over Stipe Miocic last November, fans eagerly anticipated a clash between him and Aspinall.

However, as of yet, nothing has been materialised. UFC supremo Dana White is adamant that an announcement will be made soon. Recently, Jones sent fans into meltdown when he revealed he had 'agreed' a deal with Aspinall to wait for an official announcement on their future.

In an interview on the Good Guy / Bad Guy podcast with UFC icons Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen, Aspinall was questioned about his stance. Cormier asked the Brit if he had allowed the UFC to make a decision on what he was doing - before the 32-year-old provided some stunning news.
Dismissing the rumours, Asinall stated: "Nah man, Jon is retired." Further commenting: "What are you talking about guys? You guys don't follow Jon on social media? Me too [I don't follow him]. But the guy is living his best life. He's had a fantastic career, we all know. We know Jon's a religious man, so I want to say God bless him moving forward in what he does in his life and his career.
"We move on. I'm the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I'm ready to take on all comers, get this division moving again. Us guys have been waiting around too long, the contenders are getting sick of it, everybody is getting sick of it, even the fans are getting sick of this stuff. So Jon's retired and it's time that we move on."
Aspinall later took to Instagram with a message for Jones: "Want to be the first to wish Jon all the best in his retirement," he penned. "Let's get this division going UFC." Fans had been buzzing about a potential showdown at the UFC's annual Madison Square Garden event in New York come November.
However, Aspinall's recent remarks suggest the British fighter has other plans. Now, the most logical bout for the British star appears to be against Ciryl Gane. The French fighter narrowly clinched a split decision win over Alexander Volkov last December. It has been a difficult year for the interim champion given the delay and has admitted that the Jones drama has become more mentally difficult than the toughest time in his career.

In a recent interview with UFC legend Demetrious Johnson, Aspinall admitted that the continuous delays have been more difficult for him mentally than when he went through a career-threatening injury. Back in 2022, during the Brit's first meeting with Blaydes, the fight came to a devastating end just seconds into the dust-up when Aspinall suffered a brutal injury to his knee - which sidelined him for over a year.
Since then, the 32-year-old has opened up about how mentally draining it was on him to be out of action for such a long period of time. 'It was obviously devastating to get injured in front of everybody and stuff. But anyway, it was a tough time for me. Came back, took me a year with the rehab… So it was a tough couple of months mentally.
'But I always had a little goal to work towards. Now, I've been almost a year inactive with no prospect of anything apart from wait. So now is actually a little bit more of a tricky time for me mentally than it was then. I constantly had little goals to work towards, whereas now it's like, 'Right, just be ready and we'll let you know', it's kind of difficult mentally."

Man Utd appoint new director of football as Ratcliffe oversees major shake-up

The hierarchy at Manchester United has gone through multiple changes since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner and took control of football operations 18 months ago Manchester United have appointed Jason Wilcox as their new sporting director after it emerged that Sir Dave Brailsford would be stepping back from his duties. The Red Devils had been without a sporting director since announcing the shock departure of Dan Ashworth in November. United had spent half a year chasing the ex-Newcastle chief's signature before co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe axed him after just five months, citing a lack of 'chemistry' and costing the club, who've made hundreds of staff redundant this year, a huge £4million in compensation. Wilcox, 53, was poached from Southampton and arrived as technical director two months before Ashworth. ‌ But now the former Manchester City academy head has been give a new position, one with increased seniority, after impressing Ratcliffe and senior Old Trafford figures, the Athletic report. Wilcox's promotion coincides with Brailsford's decision to step back. ‌ The ex-British cycling chief is the director of sport for INEOS, Ratcliffe's petrochemical conglomerate. Brailsford has been a consistent presence since Ratcliffe purchased his initial stake in the club which has now increased to 28.94 per cent. It's one of several changes to United's hierarchy during Ratcliffe's 18-month tenure. In April, INEOS chief Jean-Claude Blanc stepped down from his position as a director of the club. A regular at matches home and away, Brailsford was involved in the appointments of chief executive Omar Berrada and head coach Ruben Amorim. The 61-year-old carried out an audit of United's football operations and was across the £50m refurbishment of their training ground, Carrington. Brailsford even stepped down as INEOS Grenadiers' team principal to focus on the footballing project. But he'd become less visible in recent weeks, choosing to spend more time in Monaco after becoming a father last year, and will have less of a presence going forward. Brailsford will remain on United's football club board alongside legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson and former chief executive David Gill. Ratcliffe reportedly wants him to mentor cyclist Geraint Thomas, who's expected to be given a senior management position within the Grenadiers once he retires as a rider at the end of this season. Brailsford can also focus on INEOS' other sporting ventures. He was once influential at French side Nice but United's failure to qualify for European football means that he can work closely with them again. UEFA's ownership rules prevented INEOS from being as hands-on as Nice qualified for the Champions League. ‌ Will INEOS bring success back to Manchester United? Give us your prediction in the comments section. Wilcox, meanwhile, will hope to enhance his growing reputation at Old Trafford. "Jason, for me, is a guy at the coal face," Ratcliffe told the Times earlier this year. "He ran the academy at Manchester City. Txiki Begiristain, I know, thought Jason had the best eyes in the club. "Jason knows what'S working, what'S not working in terms of how Ruben's playing, his system, which players he's picking, which players we are going to buy in the future. And Jason's got views on all of those things. And when I listen to Jason speak, I get what he'S saying." Rod Stewart, 80, cancels second concert over health 3 weeks before Glastonbury

Sir Rod Stewart has cancelled another Las Vegas gig on doctors orders, after he announced his first postponement on Monday. The Maggie May rocker, 80, took to Instagram with a heartbroken emoji, and apologised for the news, explaining he was recovering from the flu. 'I'm awfully sorry to have to cancel my show on June 5th at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace,' he said. 'My doctor ordered a bit more rest while I recover from the flu. Thanks for your love and understanding.' On Monday June 2, Sir Rod explained he wasn't 'feeling well' so was postponing his gig that evening until June 10. This news will be worrying to some UK fans, who are looking forward to seeing Sir Rod light up Glastonbury Festival's Pyramid Stage for the coveted legends slot on Sunday, June 29. Alongside legends slot performer Sir Rod, headliners include The 1975, Neil Young and Olivia Rodrigo. Sir Rod has divulged a few details of what Glastonbury goers – as well as viewers on the BBC – can expect from his set, including an on stage reunion with his former Faces bandmate, Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood. While Sir Rod said he was 'proud' to be returning to the Pyramid Stage 22 years after he headlined the festival, the Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? hitmaker did reveal that the gig will cost him '£300,000'. 'It's going to cost me a fortune to do it – £300,000,' the Maggie May singer told Alan Brazil on talkSPORT Breakfast. 'I've got to bring all my band back from America, of course, Glastonbury don't pay for that.' He then added that the cost didn't bother him as the slot was an 'honour': 'But I don't care if it cost me $1million, I would have done it. This is a great honour. It really is the greatest honour.' Posting on social media, following the announcement, Sir Rod said: 'After all these years, I'm proud and ready and more than able to take the stage again to pleasure and titillate my friends at Glastonbury in June. I'll see you there!' Officially launching in 1998 with Tony Bennett's performance the coveted legends slot, taking place every year on the Sunday afternoon of Glastonbury, is considered as prestigious as a headline slot. This comes after the full Glastonbury line-up with timings dropped yesterday. While lots of ticketholders searched for clashes, they were also stumped by a mystery band on the bill called Patchwork – a fake name by Glastonbury organisers to signal a secret set from a famed artist or band. More Trending While US sisters Haim are heavily rumoured, it's also thought Patchwork could in fact be Pulp, as they drop a new album this week. According to pal and collaborator Jools Holland, Sir Rod will be bringing his model railways to the Worthy Farm festival. 'He can't bring the whole set because it's enormous. But whenever he's on tour, he'll have a station building which he will take with him to a hotel,' Jools told The Daily Mirror. Before adding: 'He could create his own little railway that goes around Glastonbury – a little ride-on thing that went up to the Healing Fields, around the jazz tent and back to the Pyramid Stage.'
