The NFL draft needs an Ace Bailey
And if they dare to push back when stripped of their freedom to choose where to live and work, they become vilified by fans and media.
During the 2025 NBA draft, something happened. As reported by ESPN.com, the representatives of former Rutgers guard/forward Ace Bailey told a team picking in the top five to not select him — and that, if that team picked him, he wouldn't show up.
The Utah Jazz selected Bailey at No. 5.
It seems as if Bailey has no problem with playing for the Jazz. If so, and if the ESPN.com report is accurate, Bailey didn't want to play for one of the other teams in the top five. And none of the other teams in the top five took him.
So maybe it worked.
Regardless, more players (in all sports) should be willing to do it. And more (any) fans and media should understand the reason for it.
And, please, drop the 'if there's no draft there will be chaos' routine. Bad teams usually stay bad, even when they have dibs on the best players.
There's a way to do it. And if, as Peter King said on PFT Live not that long ago, there was no draft, the NFL would pivot. And the replacement would be as big (if not bigger) than the draft.
Regardless, it's better for the players. And until the players have true freedom, we should applaud (not criticize) the players who choose to try to make a bad system work better for them.

Knicks interested in three-time All-Star Ben Simmons as final decision looms
The New York Knicks are shoring up their second unit this offseason, with their title aspirations growing in a wide-open Eastern Conference. The Knicks added Jordan Clarkson after he was bought out by the Utah Jazz, and they also landed former 76ers big man Guerschon Yabusele. Now, New York will look to round out its roster after making it to the Eastern Conference finals last season. According to Ian Begley of SportsNet New York, the Knicks are interested in signing three-time All-Star Ben Simmons, who was bought out by the Brooklyn Nets last season and finished the 2024-25 campaign with the Los Angeles Clippers. 'Ben Simmons is certainly a candidate for the Knicks' final roster spot,' Begley wrote. 'As of earlier this week, New York continued to show strong interest in signing Simmons as teams in on Simmons await his decision.' Simmons is not the scorer he was during his peak in Philadelphia, and it would be surprising to see him ever develop a reliable three-point shot, having attempted none in each of the past three seasons. However, he impacts the game in other ways, and the Knicks don't necessarily need additional scoring off the bench. Simmons' playmaking and rebounding would make him an intriguing addition for the Knicks. At 6-foot-10, his defensive versatility would also be a significant asset to New York. While the best days of his career are likely behind him, the former No. 1 overall pick could play a meaningful role on a contending Knicks squad. Michigan State football punter named to Ray Guy award watchlist
Michigan State football is starting to develop a reputation as one of the top programs for punters in the country. For the third year in a row, MSU punter Ryan Eckley has been named to the Ray Guy award watchlist, which is given to the top punter in college football. Michigan State has never had a punter win the prestigious award, although many fans believed Bryce Baringer should have taken the honor back in 2022, when he narrowly lost to Adam Korsak of Rutgers. Eckley took over for Baringer in 2023, and remarkably, there was barely a dip in performance. Eckley averaged 46.7 yards per punt in 2023 and 47.9 yards per punt last season. In 2024, 13.95 percent of his punts landed within the 20-yard line.
