2025 election: Iraq begins voter registration update
The one-month process, running through April 25, covers new registrations, biometric updates, deletions, corrections, and changes for displaced persons and security personnel.
In Basra, the provincial elections office reported moderate first-day turnout. '32% of voters in the province have yet to update their records,' media director Udayd Abdul Baqi told Shafaq News, urging 2007-born citizens—now eligible to vote—to obtain their biometric voter cards.
Separately, Nabrad Omar, head of the Elections Commission in the Kurdistan Region, called on residents of Erbil, Duhok, and al-Sulaymaniyah to visit one of 173 registration centers to obtain or renew their electronic voter cards, noting that voter transfers in areas covered by Article 140 remain restricted, with exceptions for married women and children of eligible voters.
Earlier, IHEC spokesperson Jumana Al-Ghalai confirmed the update was approved by the Board of Commissioners to ensure data accuracy and support broad electoral participation across all 18 provinces.

Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 11th anniversary of the 2014 Yazidi genocide by ISIS, al-Sudani pledged continued government action to address the long-term consequences of the massacre, according to his media office. He announced a package of executive and legislative steps, including plans to renovate the Lalish Temple, one of the holiest Yazidi religious sites and a major destination for global pilgrimage, affirming the government's commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice, and intensifying efforts to recover abductees and clarify the fate of the missing. More than ten years after the attack, nearly 2,600 Yazidi women and girls are still unaccounted for, while forensic teams continue exhuming and identifying remains from mass graves across Sinjar and surrounding areas. The prime minister also called on all Iraqis, including the Yazidi community, to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections on November 11.

EU marks Yazidi genocide anniversary

In a statement, the EU Delegation to Iraq condemned the 2014 massacre in Sinjar, where thousands were executed and more than 7,000 women and children were abducted and enslaved, noting that 'some young women were only recently reunited with their families.' 11 years since Da'esh committed a massacre against the Yazidi community in Sinjar.
