The second child of a woman from Thiruvananthapuram received the expensive drug Risdiplam for free. Health minister Veena George congratulated the entire team for delivering world-class advanced treatment, setting an example for the nation.
The inability to identify genetic disorders and their risk factors early often poses a challenge for SMA treatment.
However, with pre-symptomatic treatment, medication for SMA can be administered during pregnancy or within days of birth. This approach allows children to achieve 100% normal growth.
The woman, also affected by SMA, sought govt assistance to save her unborn child after understanding the risk. George instructed the child health nodal officer to take necessary action. Treatment was then ensured at SAT Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.
A specialised committee assessed each stage of the pregnancy to determine treatment based on the severity of the condition. Genetic counselling and adherence to protocols from similar cases in developed countries were part of the treatment process.
"When both parents carry the defective SMA gene, there is a 50% chance that each of their children could inherit the disease. Studies show that in India, there is a possibility of one child being diagnosed with this disease for every 7,000 births," said an official statement.

To ensure comprehensive care for children with rare diseases, a special scheme was formulated in 2024, marking a first in India. Govt's policy "Diseases may be rare, but care should not be" led to the launch of CARE project. Through this initiative, over 100 children affected by rare diseases, including SMA, receive expensive medications and corrective surgeries for spinal curvature free of cost.

Breast milk provided to 17,307 infants, donated by 4,673 mothers in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 2 (UNI) A total of 17,307 infants in Kerala have benefited from donor breast milk provided through the state's three operational breast milk banks, thanks to the generous contributions of 4,673 mothers. Health Minister Veena George announced that the breast milk banks established in various hospitals across the state have been a resounding success. Under the current government, milk banks have been set up at Kozhikode Medical College, Thrissur Medical College, and Ernakulam General Hospital. Facilities at SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam Medical College are also ready for launch. So far, 11,441 babies have received donor milk at Kozhikode Medical College, 4,870 at Thrissur Medical College, and 996 at Ernakulam General Hospital. Encouraged by this success, the government plans to expand milk banks to more hospitals, benefiting a significantly larger number of newborns. Breastfeeding Week is being observed from August 1 to 7, emphasizing the vital role of breast milk in ensuring infant health and survival. Health experts recommend initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and continuing exclusively for the first six months. However, factors such as infectious diseases, low birth weight, or mothers being on ventilators may prevent some newborns from being breastfed. The milk banks aim to bridge this gap by ensuring the availability of safe donor milk for such infants. Donor breast milk is collected from healthy, willing lactating mothers, and is then processed, screened, and stored hygienically before being distributed to infants in need. Most donations come from mothers and hospital staff. In some cases, mothers unable to breastfeed their own babies may also choose to donate milk. Milk is dispensed only after rigorous screening to confirm the absence of harmful bacteria, and it can be safely stored in freezers for several months. The Health Department, in collaboration with the Department of Women and Child Development, has prioritized the promotion of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding centres have been established in public spaces and hospitals across the state. In addition, the Mother and Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative has been launched to ensure quality and compassionate healthcare for mothers and infants and to encourage breastfeeding. This initiative has already been implemented in 45 hospitals. Minister Veena George emphasized that breastfeeding is one of the most precious gifts a mother can give to her child. Kerala achieving comprehensive and structural changes in health-care sector: Veena George
The Kerala government has succeeded in bringing about comprehensive and structural changes in the health-care sector, Health Minister Veena George has said. She was inaugurating development projects to the tune of ₹23.45 crore at the Thrissur Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) on Friday. Ms. George said the government had implemented major infrastructure upgrades and reforms across the State's health sector. She highlighted that the Thrissur MCH alone had witnessed developmental activities exceeding ₹680 crore, including the upcoming super specialty block and mother and child block, which would expand the hospital's built-up area from 85,000 sq ft to 10 lakh sq ft. 'Our next big goal is achieving Universal Health Coverage, ensuring accessible health care for all,' the Minister said. Fall in infant mortality She acknowledged the key role played by the Thrissur MCH in reducing infant mortality in Attappady, one of Kerala's most vulnerable tribal regions. In the academic domain, the Minister noted that significant progress had been made. The number of BSc Nursing seats in government institutions increased from 491 to 1,250. Increasing patronage The Minister pointed out that more people were now turning to government hospitals for treatment. As per the outpatient registration data, 13.5 crore patients have sought care from government medical colleges. In the inpatient category too, government hospitals have seen a rise in trust and utilisation. Between January and December 2024, 6.5 lakh patients received free treatment under the health insurance scheme. 'After the formation of the State Health Agency, the maximum insurance coverage per family was increased from ₹30,000 to ₹5 lakh a year,' she added. Projects Inaugurated The Minister inaugurated eight completed projects and laid the foundation stone for three new projects. The completed projects include 128-slice CT scanner set up at ₹4.78 crore; local OP facility (₹20 lakh); HDS Laboratory (₹9.9 lakh); waste disposal area (₹20 lakh); sub-store at Chest Hospital (₹39.5 lakh) and operation theatre enhancements. The foundation stones were laid for three major projects amounting to ₹16.56 crore. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Thrissur Medical College Alumni Auditorium. Xavier Chittilappilly, MLA, presided. K.V. Viswanathan, Director (In-Charge), Department of Medical Education, presented a project report. At Pazhayannur FHC The Minister also inaugurated the newly completed laboratory and several health infrastructure projects at the Pazhayannur Family Health Centre (FHC), developed under the Aardram Mission. Speaking at the event, Ms. George said the State government had succeeded in making health care more accessible and people-centric by providing free treatment and quality services across government hospitals and health centres. The event was presided over by U.R. Pradeep, MLA. K.J. Reena, Director of the Health Services, was the chief guest.

Show cause notice to MCH doctor a routine procedure, says Minister Veena George
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 1 (PTI) The show cause notice issued to the head of the Urology department at the Thiruvananthapuram government medical college hospital (MCH) was only part of a routine department-level action, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said on Friday. The Director of Medical Education (DME) had on Thursday issued a show cause notice to Haris Chirackal, asking why action should not be taken against him for criticising the government in violation of the Kerala Government Servants' Conduct Rules,1960, causing disgrace to the government. Through a Facebook post on June 27, Dr Chirakkal had expressed his resentment against the non-availability of an equipment accessory for an important surgery in his department at the medical college. The post was widely discussed in the public domain and several such inadequacies at various government hospitals in the state were highlighted by the media. The minister said a four-member expert panel was constituted to examine the doctor's action and based on its report, the DME had sought an explanation from the doctor. 'It is a routine official procedure," she said. George said the expert panel had found that Dr Chirakkal had violated service rules by going public about the issue and not approaching higher-ups in the department. The panel had also reported that part of an equipment at the Urology department was found missing and recommended a separate enquiry into the matter. Besides this, the panel also suggested that the purchasing power of superintendents of medical college hospitals, who are also Hospital Development Committee (HDC) secretaries, be increased, George said. Sharply reacting to the action against the doctor who complained about lack of facilities at the MCH, Leader of the Opposition in Kerala Assembly V D Satheesan said on Friday that the state is being ruled by a few people who will not shy away from doing whatever they want. 'The government is even trying to trap the doctor in a theft case now," he alleged. Dr Chirakkal told reporters that he would give a reply to the notice within seven days as directed by the DME.
